"Li Xiumei, do you really think what happened back then was an accident?"
Li Xiumei's crying stopped abruptly. She raised her head blankly and looked at Lu Linchuan.
Lu Linchuan slowly walked over, his leather shoes making a dull sound on the dusty ground, each step like a blow to Li Xiumei's heart.
“I have already found out who hurt my uncle back then,” Lu Linchuan said. “They were all bribed by this Japanese devil, and you were the one who cooperated with them and put on a flawless performance.”
Every word Lu Linchuan uttered was like a heavy hammer, shattering the last vestiges of tender memories of the past in Qin Tian's heart.
So it turns out... it was fake from the very beginning.
That "life-saving grace" that he owed for half his life was nothing more than a trap tailor-made for him by his enemies. What he thought was fate was the beginning of his descent into hell.
"You...you're talking nonsense!" Li Xiumei shrieked like a cat whose tail had been stepped on. "You're slandering me! Qin Tian, don't believe him! He's Su Wantang's man, of course he'll side with you! Our relationship, our many years of marriage..."
"Husband and wife?" Qin Tian slowly chewed on the word, each syllable contorting his face in an expression more painful than tears. He abruptly broke free from Li Xiumei's grasp, staggered back two steps, and leaned against the cold wall.
He didn't look at her again, but simply raised his head and stared at the cobwebs on the ceiling. Finally, murky tears slid down the cheeks of this man who had been strong all his life.
He wasn't shedding tears for this woman, but for the foolish self who had been completely deceived, who had given half his life's worth of true feelings and forbearance.
“Li Xiumei,” he finally spoke again, his voice hoarse as if it had been sanded, “you didn’t save my life. From the very beginning, you wanted to take my life, and the life of our country.”
These heart-wrenching words completely shattered Li Xiumei's psychological defenses. She collapsed to the ground, her eyes vacant, her mouth opening and closing, but no sound came out.
Just then, hurried and orderly footsteps sounded outside. It was the police officers and military personnel that Lu Linchuan had contacted in advance who had arrived.
"Lin Chuan, what's the situation inside?" the police chief leading the team asked with a serious expression.
Lu Linchuan stepped aside and pointed to the two people inside the room: "The main culprit, Wang Wu, codenamed 'Earth Dog,' was the liaison for the 'Locust' organization in the county town. The accomplice, Li Xiumei, codenamed 'Azalea,' was responsible for infiltrating and stealing intelligence. They were caught red-handed."
Several police officers immediately stepped forward and deftly put cold handcuffs on Wang Wu and Li Xiumei.
The moment she was handcuffed, Li Xiumei seemed to awaken from an endless abyss. She struggled frantically, letting out a piercing scream at Qin Tian: "Qin Tian! You'll die a horrible death! You think this is all over? You think you'll be safe once you hand us over? Let me tell you, the organization won't let you go! They'll find you! They'll find your whole family! All of you will pay with your lives!!"
Her venomous curse, like a poisonous serpent, coiled in everyone's heart.
Qin Tian simply watched her silently, watching this woman he had loved, hated, and endured for half his life, being dragged away and disappearing into the night outside the door. The anger, humiliation, and sorrow in his eyes ultimately turned into a deathly stillness.
He slowly closed his eyes.
