Chapter 55 A Powerful Counterattack!
The day before she was to leave for Beijing, Su Yue went to the post office alone without alerting anyone and made a long-distance call to the square-faced police officer of the Shanghai Public Security Bureau.
When the call connected, Su Yue got straight to the point, her voice calm.
"Comrade, this is Su Yue. Have there been any preliminary conclusions regarding the investigation into whether Su Guohua is my biological father?"
The voice on the other end of the phone was very calm.
"Comrade Su Yue, after our interrogation and preliminary evidence collection, Su Guohua has admitted that you are indeed not related to him by blood. He only registered you in the household register back then for the sake of the Su family's reputation."
Su Yue listened without any emotional fluctuation.
"I need an official certificate. I'm going to Beijing soon, and there are some things I need this certificate to clarify."
"No problem. The organization has already discussed it. Considering your special circumstances and your fiancé's military status, we can first issue you a statement of circumstances and send it directly to the Beijing Military Region Headquarters via urgent telegram. You can pick it up in person with your identification. We will notify you of the official household registration change documents after all the procedures are completed."
"Okay, thank you."
After hanging up the phone, Su Yue felt reassured.
Everything is ready, except for the east wind.
She has arrived in the capital.
Three days later, the green train arrived in Beijing.
Shen Jianguo had already arranged a car. Instead of taking Su Yue directly to the Gu family, he first picked her and Old Master Shen up and settled them in a large courtyard owned by the Shen family in Beijing.
After a short rest, Su Yue, accompanied by Mr. Shen Congwen, received the urgent telegram from Shanghai.
The telegram paper was thin, but the lead type on it carried immense weight.
Su Yue carefully folded it and put it into her inner pocket.
In the afternoon, Grandpa Shen, leaning on his cane, led Su Yue into the Gu family compound for the first time.
The atmosphere inside the Gu family compound was so oppressive that it was hard to breathe.
Grandma Gu, with her gray hair, sat in the main seat of the living room, her expression serious.
Beside him stood Gu Zhengfeng, with a resolute face, and Zhang Huilan, whose face was full of worry.
The elder brother-in-law, Gu Beihan, and his sister-in-law, Wang Yaqin, were also sitting nearby, their brows furrowed.
No one in the family spoke.
Seeing Grandpa Shen bring Su Yue in, Zhang Huilan immediately stood up, rushed over, grabbed Su Yue's hand, and her eyes reddened.
"Yueyue, my dear child, you've finally arrived! You've been so miserable these past few days!"
Su Yue felt the warmth of her palm and her heart warmed.
"Auntie, I'm fine."
Just then, a sharp and untimely voice rang out.
"Auntie, you're just too kind-hearted. Some people aren't as simple as you think. Don't get sold out and still be counting the money for them."
Shen Qingqing stepped out from the corner. She had dressed up specially for today, wearing a red dress, and her face showed undisguised contempt and hostility.
She looked Su Yue up and down, and spoke in a sarcastic tone.
"Su Yue, you're really something. What crime did your father commit? Treason! Do you know that because of you, Brother Beichen's future might be affected? Now the whole compound in Beijing is saying that the Gu family is going to marry the daughter of a traitor as their daughter-in-law. You've completely disgraced the Gu family!"
These words were so harsh and vicious that the air in the living room instantly plummeted to freezing point.
Zhang Huilan's face immediately darkened.
"Qingqing! How dare you talk like that!"
Shen Qingqing, however, persisted and raised her voice.
"Isn't what I said true? What kind of family is the Gu family? How could they let someone with such an unclear background into their home! Brother Beichen is so outstanding, we can't let her ruin him!"
Su Yue simply watched her quietly, her eyes as calm as a deep pool, making Shen Qingqing feel uneasy.
Just then, a light footstep sound came from outside the courtyard gate.
A woman dressed in a beige cheongsam walked in gracefully.
She was about twenty-four or twenty-five years old, with a slender figure, a gentle and beautiful face, and an elegant, scholarly air about her.
When Gu Nanxing saw the person who came, her eyes lit up, and she ran over affectionately to take her arm.
"Sister Jingya, you're here!"
She turned her head and introduced it to Su Yue with a hint of pride.
"Su Yue, let me introduce you. This is Sister Chu Jingya, the eldest daughter of the Chu family in the capital, and also my best friend since childhood."
Chu Jingya's gaze fell on Su Yue, a hint of scrutiny flashing in her eyes, but it quickly turned into a gentle smile.
She ignored Su Yue and went straight to the Gu family elders, gently comforting them.
"Uncle and Aunt, please don't worry too much. My father has heard about Beichen's situation, and he will try to communicate with the higher-ups. The Gu family has made so many contributions to the country over the years, and the organization will not let some unclear matters affect Beichen's future."
Her words were earnest, clearly demonstrating the Chu family's attitude.
When Shen Qingqing saw Chu Jingya arrive, she became even more arrogant.
“Jingya is right. We will help with Beichen’s affairs. Unlike some people, who only cause trouble for the Gu family and hold them back.”
Shen Qingqing's gaze was like a knife scraping against Su Yue.
"Su Yue, I advise you to have some self-awareness. You are not good enough for Brother Beichen. Quickly take the initiative to break off the engagement, and stop shamelessly clinging to the Gu family!"
The polite smile that had always graced Chu Jingya's gentle face faded slightly. She frowned slightly, a hint of barely perceptible disgust flashing in her eyes, as if she had seen something vulgar and unfit for public display.
"Shen Qingqing, I think you've misunderstood."
Shen Qingqing was feeling smug when she was suddenly called out, and her arrogant expression froze.
Chu Jingya didn't look at her again, but turned to the Gu family elders, bowed slightly, and said apologetically, "Uncle and Aunt, I came to share your burdens, not to listen to people shouting and making a scene here, treating the Gu family's courtyard like a vegetable market."
After these words were spoken, the living room became eerily quiet.
Grandma Gu's tense expression relaxed almost imperceptibly for a moment, and her gaze towards Chu Jingya held a hint of approval.
Shen Qingqing's face flushed a deep purplish-red. She never expected that the "reinforcements" she had summoned would be aimed at her first!
"Sister Jingya, I...I didn't mean that! I was just speaking up for you!"
"Help me?" Chu Jingya finally turned her gaze back to her. Her eyes were calm and indifferent, but they made Shen Qingqing feel like a country girl covered in mud, trying to rub it on someone else's snow-white dress.
"What kind of family is the Gu family? What is Bei Chen's status? These matters are for the elders and the organization to decide. When did it become your place, an outsider, to point fingers and criticize the Gu family's future daughter-in-law?"
Chu Jingya's voice was not loud, but every word she spoke was firm and resounding.
"You keep saying you're doing this for Beichen's good and for the Gu family's good, but what you're doing now, besides making your loved ones suffer and your enemies rejoice, and giving outsiders a reason to laugh at the Gu family, what good is it? Do you think solving problems is all about who shouts the loudest?"
Her gentle eyes swept over Shen Qingqing, then her tone shifted, becoming sharper.
"Does solving problems depend on who shouts the loudest or who throws the biggest tantrum? Shen Qingqing, you need to grow up."
These words left Shen Qingqing speechless. She opened and closed her mouth repeatedly, but couldn't utter a single word.
She originally thought that Chu Jingya was there to support her, and that the two of them working together would definitely crush Su Yue, this country bumpkin, into the mud!
Who would have thought that Chu Jingya would slap her hard across the face!
The living room was deathly silent.
