Chapter 465 Public Execution! Young Master Lin's Stolen Goods Are Trash
Although Old Man Lin Jianguo was still in the hospital, almost the entire Lin family was there, each of them standing tall, as if they could already see the moment when the Lin family would turn their lives around.
"Today, we will not only announce this technology, but also demonstrate the effects of the new drug on site."
Lin Jiakang waved his hand.
Two staff members dressed as nurses pushed a cart up.
On the cart were several transparent petri dishes and a few white mice in cages.
“These mice have been infected with drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.” Lin Jiakang picked up a syringe and drew out a pale yellow liquid. “Next, we will witness a miracle.”
He pointed the needle at one of the dying white mice.
The entire audience held their breath in suspense.
Just as the needle was about to pierce the mouse's skin.
"Wait a minute."
A clear, cool female voice suddenly came from the entrance of the banquet hall.
Even without a microphone, the sound penetrated the entire hall, clearly reaching everyone's ears.
Everyone turned around.
The door was pushed open from the outside.
Su Yue, wearing an ordinary white lab coat, walked in unhurriedly with her hands in her pockets.
She didn't have any bodyguards or Gu Beichen with her.
Just one person.
Yet they exuded the imposing aura of a vast army.
“Young Master Lin, if this injection is given, your ‘miracle’ might turn into a ‘murder case’.” Su Yue walked to the center of the red carpet, stopped, and looked at the stage with a half-smile.
Lin Jiakang's hand trembled slightly.
That feeling of being dominated surged back into my heart.
But he quickly regained his composure. Now, with the global media in front of him and The Lancet in his hands, what did he have to fear?
"Su Yue! You dare to come here again?" Lin Jiakang shouted sternly. "Security! Throw this academic thief out!"
The security guards were about to make a move.
Su Yue took a brown paper bag out of her pocket and tossed it into the air.
"Splash—"
Dozens of photos and data copies fell down like snowflakes.
A reporter who was nearby picked up a photo, glanced at it, and his expression changed instantly.
That's a screenshot of Lin Jiakang's published paper, with several key data points circled in red next to it.
An experimental record sheet is also attached below.
The record sheet bore a striking line of red text: [Experiment No. X-99, lethality 100%, toxin release exceeded limit, destruction recommended.]
Date of signature: October 1971.
It was a full year earlier than the research and development time claimed by Lin Jiakang.
"An academic thief?" Su Yue stepped onto the stage, using a photograph as a stepping stone, and approached Lin Jiakang.
For every step she took, Lin Jiakang took a step back.
"Young Master Lin, when you stole that thing, didn't you even look closely at what the folder was called?"
Su Yue stood in front of the microphone, looking at the astonished faces below the stage, a cruel smile curving her lips.
"That folder is called—"
"garbage can."
These three words were like a slap, crisp and loud, striking Lin Jiakang's face.
The crowd below the podium erupted instantly.
Reporters frantically pressed their shutters, afraid of missing this dramatic scene. The foreign experts who had been nodding in praise of Lin Jiakang were now whispering among themselves, their faces showing suspicion.
"You're talking nonsense!" Lin Jiakang's face turned a deep shade of liver as he gripped the syringe tightly. "This is clearly data I independently developed in the Oxford lab! Su Yue, you're slandering me! I'm going to sue you for defamation!"
He cannot lose.
This is the Lin family's last chance to turn things around.
If this performance goes wrong today, the Lin family will truly be doomed.
"Slander?" Su Yue chuckled, took a marker from a staff member next to her, and turned around to write a series of formulas on the whiteboard behind her.
It was an extremely complex molecular formula involving the gene sequence of bacteriophage coat proteins.
"Young Master Lin, since you say this is something you developed independently, could you explain it to everyone?" Su Yue tapped a chemical bond on the whiteboard with her pen cap. "Why did you introduce an unstable sulfur bond at this position?"
Lin Jiakang was stunned.
Although he has a PhD in biology, he only had a superficial understanding of many of the core data in this paper, relying entirely on copying them from the stolen folder.
How would he know what that sulfur bond does?
"This...this is to increase...to increase stability..." Lin Jiakang stammered, making things up.
"wrong."
Su Yue interrupted him, her voice icy cold.
"The existence of this sulfur bond is to induce the self-destruction of the bacteriophage at a specific temperature." She threw down her pen and dusted off her hands. "This is a self-destruct program that I specially designed to prevent the bacterial strain from leaking out. As long as the temperature exceeds 37.5 degrees Celsius, this bond will break and release a neurotoxin called 'cadaverine'."
"Impossible!" Lin Jiakang roared. "I've conducted dozens of experiments in the lab, and there's absolutely nothing like what you're describing!"
“That’s because your lab is kept at a constant temperature of 25 degrees Celsius,” Su Yue said, looking at him with pity. “While the body temperature of mice is around 38 degrees Celsius.”
Lin Jiakang froze.
The syringe in his hand suddenly felt incredibly heavy.
"Don't believe me?" Su Yue pointed to the syringe in his hand. "Then give me the injection. Prove me wrong in front of so many experts."
All eyes were on the syringe.
The mice were restless and fidgeting in their cage, as if they sensed danger.
Lin Jiakang's hands began to tremble violently.
To fight or not to fight?
If the mice are unharmed after the injection, Su Yue's lie will be exposed.
But what if what she said is true...
A bead of cold sweat trickled down his temple and into his collar, chilling him to the bone.
"What? You don't dare?" Su Yue pressed on, "Dr. Lin, didn't you just say it was a miracle? How come you don't even dare to verify your own miracle?"
The murmurs from the audience grew louder and louder.
"I think he's just feeling guilty!"
"There's definitely something wrong with this data!"
"I knew it! How could a factory as big as Blue Ocean plagiarize a student who hasn't even graduated yet?"
The doubts flooded Lin Jiakang like a tidal wave, overwhelming him.
Just then, Professor Smith, the foreign expert sitting in the audience, couldn't sit still any longer.
He had strongly recommended this paper to The Lancet; if something went wrong, his academic reputation would be ruined.
"Let him do it!" Professor Smith shouted, standing up. "Science needs proof!"
Lin Jiakang was brought back to his senses by the shout.
He glanced at Smith, then at the aggressive Su Yue. A sliver of hope won out.
Su Yue must be bluffing him!
How could there be such an ingenious self-destruct mechanism? It's just a regular sulfur bond!
"Fine, let's fight!"
Lin Jiakang gritted his teeth and plunged the needle deep into the mouse's abdominal cavity, pushing the piston.
The pale yellow liquid was slowly injected.
The entire venue was deathly silent.
One second.
Two seconds.
The mouse twitched slightly, but there seemed to be nothing wrong with it.
