Chapter 27 Why Rent a Courtyard?
Liu Xian and the other two stood outside the Gu family's courtyard gate. When they saw the gate open, they all smiled and instinctively reached out to walk into the courtyard.
Unfortunately, Mrs. Gu didn't give them a chance. She blocked the doorway and asked, "What is it?"
Liu Xian was taken aback, then said with a pitiful expression, "Aunt Gu, our room hasn't been cleaned yet, could we stay here for the night?"
"No!" Gu's mother refused decisively.
As they spoke, thunder rumbled from the stomachs of all three.
I wasn't able to smell the fragrance very clearly from a distance.
Standing at the entrance to the courtyard, the enticing aroma of food was even more pronounced, making the three of them even hungrier.
But Gu's mother actually blocked the door, preventing them from going in.
Otherwise, once inside, they might "just happen" to run into the Gu family having dinner.
Since the three of them hadn't eaten, the Gu family should have invited their guests to eat with them, both morally and logically.
In this way, they can "unable to refuse the hospitality" and sit down to have a meal together.
But who would have thought that this Mrs. Gu would have no sense of inviting them in at all, completely ruining their plan to freeload a meal.
"Well... Aunt Gu, we just smelled the aroma of food. We've been busy all day and haven't eaten yet. Could we have something to eat at your house?"
Liu Xian continued to play the victim, looking as if she was starving and about to collapse.
"We've finished our meal, there's nothing left." Gu's mother shook her head, telling the truth. Besides, even if there were leftovers, she wouldn't give them to them.
Human nature is unpredictable. For some people, offering help will not only fail to evoke gratitude, but may even bring disaster.
Moreover, none of these three young men seem to be of good character.
Liu Xian and the other two immediately changed their expressions. They never expected that Gu's mother would refuse them so ruthlessly, leaving no room for negotiation.
Xia Yi couldn't stand it anymore: "Aunt Gu, we all came to the countryside at the same time, and we will all be educated youth in this village in the future. We should help each other. Isn't it too much for you to be so indifferent?"
Zheng Haiyang also said unhappily, "That's right. Besides, this house belongs to the village. Why can you live here, but we can't?"
“We’ve already rented this courtyard!” said Su Xiangwan.
Hearing the argument, she worried that Gu's mother would be at a disadvantage, so she quickly came over with Gu Yanxiao.
"What?"
Zheng Haiyang and the other two were stunned: "You... you rented this courtyard?"
"That's right. If you don't believe me, you can go and ask the village secretary."
Su Xiangwan asked coldly, "Is there anything else?"
Looking at the spacious courtyard and the enticing aroma of food wafting from it, Liu Xian's seemingly serene face flashed with a momentary ferocity: "You... what right do you have to rent this courtyard first?"
This spacious and comfortable courtyard is so much more comfortable to live in than the former educated youth settlement.
If she had known there was such a comfortable courtyard available for rent, she would have...
"If you have any problems, go find the village secretary! Don't go crazy here!"
If before, Gu's mother only maintained a "let's keep to ourselves" attitude towards Liu Xian and her family, now she is truly disgusted by them.
He simply said that and slammed the door shut.
"She looks like a fair-skinned girl, how come she's not very bright?"
Su Xiangwan chuckled, stepped forward and took Gu's mother's arm, saying affectionately, "Mom, you've had a long day, don't let some unimportant people upset you."
When Gu's mother was affectionately taken in, she felt incredibly relieved. Gently holding her hand, she said, "Luckily, we rented this house and moved out from them. Otherwise, I don't know how much more upset we would have been!"
Gu Yanxiao listened to the sounds of the three people arguing outside the door, his expression turned cold, and it was unclear what he was thinking.
Liu Xian and the others lingered outside the Gu family's courtyard for a while. Knowing they couldn't get in, they returned to the educated youth settlement with a heavy heart and continued tidying up the two storage rooms.
"The Gu family is going too far. How can they be so selfish as to abandon us and rent a house? Five of them are taking up such a big yard. Don't they have any shame?"
They saw it; the courtyard had two floors, and even if each floor only had two rooms, it still had four rooms in total.
Are there enough rooms for the five of them?
Moreover, they came to the countryside together, and the Gu family cooked a meal but didn't even invite them to eat with them. They are really too selfish.
Such a lack of social skills! This whole family has come to the countryside; they must have been ostracized in the city and couldn't stand it anymore.
Filled with resentment, the three reluctantly finished the remaining dry rations and tidied up the house a little.
After finally finding a spot on the floor that could barely accommodate me, I couldn't resist my exhaustion and fell asleep.
The next day, before dawn, various noises broke out at the educated youth settlement.
It was time for the older educated youth to get up and prepare for work.
There are seven former educated youth, including two couples.
One couple was Shao Guoyang and Li Aiping, who had recently gotten married.
Another couple is Liu Heping and Chen Zhaodi. They got married not long after they went to the countryside and had a son, Liu Jiabao, who is now four years old.
The remaining three educated youths were Xu Yirou, Xie Manman, and Yang Junqing.
After getting up, the group quickly ate some breakfast and prepared to head to the fields.
Then they saw Liu Xian and the other two yawning as they came out.
Upon seeing the beautiful Liu Xian, Yang Junqing's eyes lit up, and he said, "So you're the new educated youth! My name is Yang Junqing, and I've been in the countryside for two years. Her name is Xu Yirou, and..."
Yang Junqing warmly introduced Liu Xian and the others.
Although Liu Xian was unhappy that Yang Junqing and the others had closed the door early last night and hadn't come to help her tidy up the room, she couldn't say much because of his enthusiastic attitude. She could only introduce herself.
“I remember Secretary Tong said that eight new educated youths were coming, so why are there only three of you?”
Xia Yi snorted coldly: "You mean the Gu family? They're not like us. They just got off the oxcart and already complained about this educated youth settlement, so they rented another house to live in!"
"Rent a house?" Yang Junqing was taken aback. To be honest, the conditions at this educated youth settlement were terrible. He had considered renting a house before.
But he didn't have much money with him, and he couldn't earn enough work points to make ends meet. It was already difficult enough to make a living, let alone have extra money to rent a house.
Moreover, this village of eight trees has always been quite exclusive, so who would be willing to rent a house to them?
Could it be...?
Xia Yi gestured with her chin toward the courtyard where the Gu family lived, looking annoyed: "Look, that's the courtyard they rented!"
Amidst the lively discussion, no one noticed that Xie Manman's expression turned somewhat strange upon hearing the words "Gu family."
The Gu family? Them?
She remembered that in her previous life, there was only one educated youth named Gu who came!
