Long-distance travel is most difficult for children; once the novelty wears off, they get bored.
Yu Yin and her friends brought six children out, so they could play games together. As Kuai Kuai asked again, "Mommy, how much longer until we get there?" the announcement came from the carriage that the train was about to arrive at the station. Kuai Kuai perked up; finally, they were getting off.
The children packed their own things, each carrying a small bag containing their personal belongings.
Yu Yin and her friends didn't have much luggage; most of it consisted of lunchboxes and changes of clothes.
Before getting out of bed, Ping An and the others folded their blankets neatly, which Yu Yin didn't need to remind them of; the children did a good job.
The train has stopped; we've arrived at our final stop.
Yu Yin didn't let the children push forward. It was the final stop, no rush. There were too many people, and they would easily get separated.
When most people had finished getting off the train, Yu Yin and her group started to descend, with the children sandwiched between the adults.
The train station in Beijing wasn't as bustling as it is in later years, but the flow of people was still as large as ever. Yu Yin and her companions, holding their children's hands, walked towards the exit, not knowing if anyone would be there to pick them up.
"Yinyin, here."
"Brother?"
Yu Yin couldn't even remember the last time she saw her brother; she had always missed him. She hadn't seen him since he left to recover from his injury. After Yu's father was demobilized and returned to his hometown, her brother went back once with his wife and children, but it was a brief visit.
The young man hasn't changed much; he's maintained his physique well and hasn't gained weight.
"Second brother, I'm here too."
"I know, why aren't you going home for the holidays?"
Yu Kang hasn't been home once since he started university, but he plans to go home for winter break this year.
"Where will my sister-in-law and nephews be when I go back for winter break?"
"I'm waiting at home."
"Hello, Uncle!"
Yu Jun can still recognize the six children, and Yu Yin sends photos every year.
"Hello kids, let's go home first, there are too many people here."
Yu Jun arrived in a small Jiefang truck, knowing that there were many of them and the jeeps wouldn't be able to accommodate them all, so he specially found a large truck.
The children climbed up quickly, while Yu Yin felt incredibly ashamed. She had struggled for ages and still couldn't get up; she really needed more practice. Finally, with Lu Shurui pushing from below and Yu Kang pulling from above, they managed to climb up.
“Mom, you always say you need to exercise whenever something happens, but you never actually do it. What else can I say this time?”
An'an looked at her mother, her words stinging. Yu Yin's understanding of exercise was still limited to talk; what a brat, not cute at all.
Looking at the mother and daughter, Lu Shurui had no choice but to comfort his wife, "When we get home, I'll exercise with you. With someone to accompany you, you might be able to stick to it."
Yu Yin rolled her eyes. These two, father and son, really don't know how to talk.
Yu Yin gave up and went back to exercise. Her physical strength was obviously not good anymore. She used to be able to climb mountains and do anything, but now she was far from it.
The children stood on the bus, watching the passing vehicles and pedestrians, and the scenery receding into the distance. They were filled with pride and wanted to shout out loud.
The environment became more and more remote as the car drove on; we were almost at the military compound.
An'an's eyes lit up; she saw the soldier on guard!
At the entrance of the compound stood three boys and a beautiful woman.
"Sister Yixian, I'm here."
Yu Yin spotted Su Yixian from afar. Beside her were probably her three boys. Chu Yang was two years older than Pingping and quite tall. Chu Chen was still as handsome as ever; An'an had always liked playing with the good-looking Chu Chen. The youngest, Chu Ming, was a bit older than Kuai Kuai and Manman, and she didn't know if he was still prone to crying.
Although Yu Jun was in the Air Force, the family compounds were all next to each other, not far apart. His wife and two children came over from there.
Yu Yin got out of the car and hugged Su Yixian. It had been more than two years since they had separated.
"Yu Yin, you haven't changed at all!"
"Sister Yixian, you look much more radiant than when you were in Yunnan Province. It seems that the environment in Beijing really does nurture people."
Friends who hadn't seen each other for a long time seemed to have endless things to talk about, and they didn't even care about the children.
"Yinyin, this is your sister-in-law, Bai Xiaoyu."
"Hello, sister-in-law, I am Yu Yin."
Yu Yin was pulled over by her brother to introduce his wife.
"Hello, I've heard your brother talk about you a lot, it's great to finally meet you."
Two strangers quickly warmed up to each other because of people they knew together. Yu Yin also introduced Lu Shurui, Shuqi, and Shuyun to her sister-in-law.
"Alright, let's go home. Stop blocking the doorway."
Yu Jun invited Yu Yin and the others to go back to their own home.
"Sister Yixian, I'll come see you again tomorrow. This time I can stay a few more days."
"Okay, go ahead. We just got off the bus. We won't be in a hurry. We just wanted to see you first."
Su Yixian took her three sons home and let Ping An and An rest for a while.
Yu Yin and her brother went to their home, a two-bedroom, one-living room apartment of over 60 square meters. It usually looks quite spacious, but with so many people coming in, it felt like there wasn't enough room to move.
"The house always seemed pretty big!"
"There are too many people; most houses can't accommodate them all. Hey buddy, did you open a guesthouse for us?"
Yu Yin had informed them in advance that there were many of them and they would be staying at a guesthouse.
"It's all set. We'll stay at the military guesthouse; it's clean and safe."
Let's go to the guesthouse to wash up; our food will go bad in the car.
"Okay, I'll take you there."
Yu Jun led the group to the military district guesthouse, which was located in the family compound. They booked large rooms with three large beds. Yu Yin and Shu Yun led three girls to stay in one room, while Lu Shurui and Lu Shuqi led the other boys to stay in another.
There's a public bathhouse in the family compound. Yu Yin and her friends are going to take a bath there, and they need to scrub themselves thoroughly because it feels like the fabric is crumbling at the slightest touch.
