Yu Yin looked at the house she had lived in for more than two years, a place filled with many memories.
The initial confusion upon arriving in Shanghai, the hectic pace of picking up and dropping off the children, the love and care from grandparents... all these memories flood back.
Yu Yin reminisced about the past at home, while Lu Shurui and his family were also busy.
"Great-Grandpa, we're back."
Kuaikuai was still the fastest, running like a little colt into her great-grandparents' house.
"You're back! Did you have fun?"
The elderly couple smiled when they heard the children's voices. They'd been back for a while, but what they missed most was the cheerful chatter of their children. As people get older, they feel they've lost their vitality, and they cherish the vibrant energy of children; just watching them brings them joy.
An'an told her great-grandparents about the flag-raising ceremony in the square, her feelings when she climbed the city wall, and the awe she felt when visiting the Forbidden City... She also mentioned that she made new friends, trained together, and made great progress...
Pingping occasionally added to the list, while Kuaikuai mostly talked about food: hot pot with mutton, roast duck—it was delicious! And douzhi (fermented mung bean juice), which they didn't like. There were also various snacks, but I didn't remember their names.
Manman quietly listened to her older siblings talking, sitting close to her great-grandmother. When she heard something interesting, she would smile along. Grandma Lu gently touched Manman's hair. What wonderful children they were.
"I'm going to see Grandma, who's going?"
"I'm not going. I still need to talk to my great-grandparents!"
An'an knew that her grandmother didn't like them, especially her and Manman, so she didn't want to go.
"Dad, I want to go see Teacher An."
She started missing her teacher, and she even drew a picture to show her.
Pingping glanced at his father and felt sorry for him. She thought, "Why don't I sacrifice myself and go with him?" Kuai Kuai was a little confused. He had no memory of his grandmother—neither good nor bad—and hadn't seen her much.
"Dad, I'll go with you."
Pingping breathed a sigh of relief and thanked Kuaikuai in her heart. She decided that when she got home, she would give her toy car to her younger brother. It was a big sacrifice.
Great-grandfather looked at the children and silently shook his head, thinking that his eldest daughter-in-law had failed as a person, squandering a golden opportunity. "The path you chose, you have to walk it to the end, even if you have to crawl," he said. "There are no second chances in life!"
"Alright, you take Kuai Kuai and go, Pingping and I will take Man Man to see Lao An."
Grandpa Lu misses his old friends, but he's getting old and doesn't like to move around much. That's not good; he needs to move around more, otherwise his body will become stiff.
After agreeing on their routes and carrying their belongings, they each set off.
Grandpa Lu and his old friends met without any major incidents. Professor An was pleased to see the painting that was brought over slowly, saying that his young apprentice was quite good, talented and hardworking!
When Lu Shurui arrived at his mother's house, he looked at the wall and felt very unfamiliar with it. He felt that this was no longer his home, and he no longer felt any joy in returning home.
"Oh, Second Brother is back? He's really rich, going to Beijing whenever he wants."
"I want to go wherever someone goes."
“You’re not even in the running. Your second uncle didn’t fancy you; he only took your second aunt’s older brother and sister with him.”
Wang Mengyao stood at the door, speaking in a sarcastic tone, causing the surrounding neighbors to gossip.
"Why should we take you with us when we go to Beijing? You should have your parents take you."
Kuai Kuai felt that these two people were acting strangely, and their tone of voice wasn't very friendly.
"My parents don't have money, but your parents do."
Lu Xiangqiang always heard his parents say that his second uncle's family was rich, that they bought big houses, and that they went on trips...
"My parents have money because they worked hard to earn it. What does it have to do with you?" Kuai Kuai felt baffled!
"My mom said that people need to learn skills so they can have a good life in the future. We'll have to support ourselves in the future too."
When Yu Yin talks to her children, she says that only knowledge and skills truly belong to oneself and cannot be taken away by others. Everyone must be able to support themselves; no one will let you depend on them forever.
"But, but, my mother said..."
"Your mother is wrong."
He quickly interrupted Lu Xiangqiang and skipped after his father into the house.
Lu Shurui was completely indifferent from beginning to end, always blaming others for everything, and she couldn't explain herself.
"How can this child talk like that?"
"What that kid said makes a lot of sense. It's better to have what you have than to covet what others have. Instead of worrying about what others have, you should work hard to earn it yourself."
After listening for a while, the old lady next door to Lu's mother felt that what the child said was absolutely right.
"That's right, Shu Rui and his wife really know how to raise children." An older woman who was watching the commotion chimed in. They'd lived together for over ten years; everyone knew each other well.
"Their parents are both top students from Shanghai University, how could they not know how to teach?"
"That's right, it's one of the top universities in our area. If my grandson can get into it, I'll have to go there every day to fulfill my vow!"
The two became happier and happier as they talked, feeling that their younger generation was about to make something of themselves, and their voices drowned out those of Wang Mengyao and her son!
"You're back?"
As soon as Lu Shurui and Kuai Kuai entered the house, they saw Lu's mother sitting in a chair.
"I arrived yesterday. My second sister told me you were sick. How are you? Are you feeling better?"
"He won't die."
Lu's mother didn't know what was wrong with her, but she felt depressed whenever she saw Lu Shurui. She wasn't a stepmother, so why was she not treated well?
"I heard you're moving to a new house. You've really made something of yourselves, living in a garden villa now."
Lu's mother spoke with veiled sarcasm, implying that while she herself couldn't live in a garden villa, her son and grandson were enjoying it.
"Yes, it's all thanks to Yu Yin. We're the ones who benefited from it."
Yu Shurui seemed not to understand the meaning behind his mother's words, and praised his wife.
