After successfully weaning, Yu Yin was able to let loose and be herself.
Now, Lu Shurui is a full-time stay-at-home dad, taking care of the children and doing housework every day. After work, Yu Yin carries a basket on her back and goes up the mountain to bring back the bounty of the mountains.
Yunnan Province has a unique climate, so there are things to gather all year round. From wild vegetables and medicinal herbs to fruits, as long as you're diligent, the harvest can be quite good. Yu Yin hasn't been busy going home to cook or feed the children lately, so she spends her free time heading up the mountain.
The small square now boasts many more large bamboo baskets filled with the medicinal herbs Yu Yin has gathered. Yu Yin doesn't recognize many herbs; the one she's seen most often is Dendrobium officinale. She doesn't dare touch anything she doesn't recognize—who knows if it's poisonous? She can't afford to gamble.
They picked mostly mushrooms and fruits, especially pineapples, which were in season at the time. The ripe pineapples emitted an enticing aroma, unlike the artificially ripened ones of later generations. There were also dates, several kinds, which Yu Yin couldn't distinguish from one another, but she knew they were all delicious and she liked them all.
However, fruit is hard to come by; most of the nearby fruit has already been picked clean. Occasionally, you might find one or two that have slipped through your fingers, but that depends on luck.
Yu Yin has always been lucky. While she might not always be lucky, she's lucky nine out of ten times. On one occasion, she even manages to find other good things. This is why Yu Yin likes to go up the mountain; she's addicted to it.
"Lu Shurui, come out quickly, look what I found!"
"Second sister, what did you find?"
"Hey, when did you get here? Do your parents know?"
“I came this afternoon. My parents know. I told them I was here to help my brother-in-law take care of the kids, otherwise they wouldn’t have allowed me to come.”
Yu Kang felt a little aggrieved. He was raised by his second sister since he was a child, and they had become estranged after she got married.
“Sure, I was worried about your brother-in-law taking care of the child by himself. It’s perfect that you’re here to lend a hand.”
"real?"
"Really, Yu Kang helped a lot this afternoon."
Lu Shurui came over, carrying one of the two little ones in each arm; he looked a bit tired.
"Put them on the bamboo couch; it's too heavy to carry them."
"I'll release it now. I rushed over as soon as I heard your voice. What good stuff have you gotten your hands on this time? It sounds nice."
Yu Yin couldn't help but laugh again. It was indeed true; that small piece of pineapple, that aroma, could be smelled from a great distance.
"Look, what is this?"
Yu Yin took pineapples out of the basket on her back, one, two, three... and pulled out a total of six big pineapples.
The golden-yellow crust was a bit dry, but you could still taste its sweetness.
"Wow, so many pineapples, and they're quite big!"
"Right, it was found in one place, I don't know why it wasn't discovered before, I got lucky."
"You're really lucky. The fruit on the outer perimeter has been picked clean, especially by the educated youth, who would go for a stroll every few days."
Come to think of it, fruit is definitely tastier than the food in the cafeteria, so I can pass up the fruit.
"An'an, slow down, don't bump your head. Ouch, I told you to slow down, you bumped your head now..."
Over there, Yu Kang, like a little adult, was watching his nephew and niece.
"Kang Kang has been a great help to me. I don't have to worry about running back and forth when I'm cooking. He understands everything very well. He just doesn't like to study. Whenever I ask him to study, he wants to go to the toilet."
This brother-in-law was at his wit's end with his brother-in-law who didn't like to study.
“I told him to do his homework tonight, and not to waste what he has learned on his meals. He hasn’t learned much to begin with.”
"Okay, go ahead and talk about him. Don't say I'm complaining, it'll seem like I'm being unreasonable and it'll affect our relationship."
"Oh ho, you two are in a relationship?"
"That's right. Ever since you were weaned, you've been completely free. You've been running around like a ghost. I still have to rely on my brother-in-law to help take care of the baby."
Looks like being a stay-at-home dad isn't easy either; he's even a little grumbling. Hmph, let him experience firsthand how hard moms work!
"Okay, I definitely won't betray you. It's almost Chinese New Year, so I need to make some preparations in advance; I'll have to send New Year's gifts later!"
"New Year's gifts? What New Year's gifts?"
"Are you crazy? During the New Year, how could my second sister and her family not send us things? We have to give them gifts in return. Grandpa and Grandma, your parents, and my third aunt all have to send us New Year's gifts."
“I really didn’t know we had to prepare all this. I’ve never done this before, but I’ll be more careful in the future. We also need to prepare New Year’s gifts for your parents, and for my brother-in-law and second brother-in-law as well.”
They reacted quickly and knew how to apply what they learned to other situations.
"I've already planned everything for my parents; one outfit for each of them. My second sister sent a lot of fabric, so that's enough. As for my little brother, I made a fool of myself by remembering to give him his underwear last time, haha..."
Speaking of the underwear Yu Yin made, a modal-style design, Lu Shurui liked it very much; it was comfortable and fit her perfectly. Good things should be shared, so Yu Yin first wrote to Lu's second sister, enclosing the underwear patterns, one for men and one for women. She also emphasized that if there was any similar fabric, she would send her some more.
When Lu Erjie received the letter, she was overjoyed. She didn't even wait the next day; she immediately made a silk scarf for her husband, and it was well-received. She happily went to Huaiguo Old Town and found several more scarves in different colors. She kept half and sent the rest to Yu Yin.
After receiving the fabric, Yu Yin made several more pairs for her parents. These were much more comfortable than those baggy shorts.
Such a nice item, how could I leave out my brother? I made five more for him, so he can wear them in rotation. Sending a larger batch at once saves on shipping costs.
Unexpectedly, when Brother Yu went on a mission, the package arrived, containing food. His comrade, worried that it would spoil if left for too long, kindly helped him open it. They were amazed to see a pair of unusual shorts, and this incident later became a running joke.
