There wasn't much to do before the New Year, and nowadays, extravagant celebrations aren't allowed. Work gets busier at the end of the year, so even if Yu Yin doesn't go up the mountain, things aren't easy.
"Xiaoyu, once we finish checking this stack of forms, we can go home. We're either so idle we're practically sitting around doing nothing, or so busy we're like dogs."
I took the form from Sister Wang; it was a business trip expense report. It's really convenient these days; you can get anything reimbursed for a business trip—anything you've used is reimbursed. It's a bit of a hassle to organize though, since there are so many small items.
"There's nothing we can do. We're the opposite of others. When others are busy, we're idle, and when others are idle, we're busy."
"You're so lucky, you have Xiao Lu to take care of everything, you don't have to worry about anything. Unlike me, after get off work I'm exhausted, I still have to cook, do laundry, and clean the house, and none of my dads can lend a hand."
That's true. Wang Jie's eldest son is a little over ten years old, and besides running around all day, he can't help with anything. Her two daughters are both quite young, so they really can't help with housework, but thankfully the older one can take care of the younger one.
Seeing how tired Sister Wang was, Yu Yin felt grateful that she only had two children, Ping An and An. Otherwise, she would have become a mother herself, spending every day taking care of her children.
"Teach your eldest and second sons to do some work. You can't rely on your sons, but you can still train them."
"Are boys capable of doing housework?"
Yu Yin didn't want to elaborate on whether it was feasible, as their relationship wasn't close enough for her to discuss such matters at that level.
After venting for a while, she buried herself in her work again, wanting to finish so she could go home. She was starting to miss her family's logistics assistant, Xiao Lu.
Before even entering the courtyard, Yu Yin heard unfamiliar voices coming from her house.
"Have we had guests?"
Standing in the courtyard was a girl of about seventeen or eighteen years old. She had a fair and delicate face, big eyes with double eyelids, and an oval face. She was definitely a pretty girl, the kind who could be both sweet and sassy.
"You're back. This is Ms. Wen, the school's new music teacher this year."
Lu Shurui took Yu Yin's bag and casually hung it on the bamboo nail by the door.
"Sent-down youth?"
"Yes, I'm also from Shanghai, in the same district as Brother Lu. What's even more coincidental is that we graduated from the same high school; Brother Lu had already graduated when I started school."
His face showed regret for being born at the wrong time, a sense of helplessness that he was born too late.
Yu Yin glanced at Lu Shurui sideways. He's got quite a few suitors, one after another.
"Teacher Wen, please call me Teacher Lu. We're not familiar with each other, so it's inconvenient for me to call you Brother Lu."
Oh my god, please don't do this to me! The trouble with Wang Mengyao is over, and now this is happening again. Heaven is going to kill me!
There was a former educated youth from Northeast China at Lu Shurui's school. He was very funny and got infected by his humor without even realizing it, but it was quite interesting.
"Brother Lu, no, Teacher Lu, I thought we were from the same place and could look after each other, but I never expected this, sister-in-law..."
This is still a delicate white flower, so hesitant to speak, but unfortunately, Mr. Lu has no chivalry; it's like a blind man lighting a lamp in vain.
"You're really something. We weren't even that close to each other. You came here today to ask us something, and we didn't say anything. But you're acting like you've done something to us."
Lu Shurui looked like a handsome young man, tall and upright, with the air of a refined gentleman.
Actually, he speaks quite bluntly, is a bit out of touch with reality, and has a rather bookish air about him.
However, in the narrow-minded 1970s, amidst a sea of tough guys whose beauty standard was a square face, his appearance was surprisingly attractive to some young girls whose hearts were filled with the mystery of love.
"Sorry to bother you."
The little white flower ran away crying; that was quite a move.
"Is our classmate Lu doing well? He's getting one suitor after another!"
"No, we're really not that close. Who knows what got into her? Everyone at our school knows I'm married with kids. If she still has those kinds of thoughts, it just shows she's a bad person."
If a girl with a pure heart knew that the person she admired thought she was a bad person, would she really cry?
It was just a minor incident; it shouldn't affect Yu Yin's mood. The life she had always wanted couldn't be destroyed by some underhanded means. Even if she lost her man in the end, she still had her child.
Love is not a necessity of life, and besides, what they have now cannot be considered love.
Even the greatest love in the world, the love of a father and mother, is unreliable, let alone the so-called love between two strangers!
Yu Yin sometimes felt helpless. She knew that the present was the present and the past was the past, but the feeling of being abandoned was not so easy to get rid of.
Having spent so much time together, Lu Shurui could sense that Yu Yin was very insecure, and that she liked to curl up in a ball and sleep alone in a small corner.
Every time he saw Yu Yin like that, he felt a pang of sadness. He didn't know what caused her unease, nor did he know if he had the ability to dispel her unease and make her trust him.
When Yu Yin was awake, she would chat and laugh, occasionally teasing herself and laughing heartily as she watched herself blush. But when she was asleep, Yu Yin was curled up in a corner, looking so helpless and pitiful, a sight she had never seen before.
The two people, each with something on their mind, chose to ignore each other instead of opening their hearts.
"What about Ping An and Yu Kang?"
"I had so much fun this afternoon, I'm still sleeping now."
"Yu Kang is quite sensible. He said he would come to see the child, and he did. Not bad. If we train him well, he will be a good helper in the future."
"Second sister, are you really planning to make me a babysitter expert?"
Yu Kang had just woken up and gone downstairs when he heard his second sister's declaration, and he almost cried from anger.
