Chapter 56 The Argument at the Yu Family

After Yu Yin's family left, Yu's elder brother and sister-in-law had a fierce argument.

"Wei Mingyue, is this really necessary? For so many years, as a son, I haven't fulfilled my filial duties. Now that I finally have a chance to come back, you're acting like you're unwilling. Why can't you stand this environment? I'm not asking you to stay here forever, just for a while. You can't fake it, can you?"

Whether provoked by Yu Yin or feeling guilty, Brother Yu seemed to have forgotten that he himself had once disliked the harsh environment when he was young, and that he and Sister Yu always came and went in a hurry.

"What's wrong with me? I'm just not used to it, so I said it directly. We're family, there's no need to be so hypocritical."

Sister-in-law Yu places herself on a moral high ground, believing that being a family and being genuine is wonderful. However, some truths are not accepted.

"Alright, I finally came back, and it's all Yu Yin's fault. It's such a small thing, why make such a big deal out of it? Ever since she had the baby, she's become a completely different person, so sharp-tongued and relentless."

Yu's mother's words were infuriating; her favoritism was too obvious.

Yu Kang was so angry after hearing his mother's words that his eyes widened and he snorted angrily.

"Mom, you're wrong to say that. Yu Yin has been busy cooking since she came in. She made the food but was criticized. No one would be happy in that situation."

"Who complained about her cooking?"

"Alright, shut up. Yu Kai, you two should take the kids to rest too. We can talk about it tomorrow. What's all this arguing about so late at night? It's embarrassing."

Yu Kai took his son, and his sister-in-law took her daughter; together they left the living room.

"What's wrong with you? You felt bad for Yu Yin last time, and now you've already forgotten what you said? What, do you think honest kids have to put in more effort and be more tolerant in your eyes?"

"I didn't say that. Besides, is Yu Yin honest these days? When she's being sarcastic, every word she says is cutting. I just think that Yu Kai and Mingyue have finally come back, and it's not a big deal. Is it necessary to be so serious? Besides, what does a child know? Can she tell whether someone is disgusted or not?"

"You're hopeless, I can't be bothered to talk to you."

Mr. Yu was furious; he refused to eat and went to bed. He had returned home happily, expecting a family reunion, but this was the unexpected outcome.

The couple, Brother Yu and his wife, were both unwilling to give in to each other, and they had no desire to talk. They quickly washed up and went to bed.

The next day, Yu's mother returned from the cafeteria with breakfast.

Brother Yu and his wife have already gotten up, but the two younger children are still asleep. Perhaps their parents' argument yesterday made them uneasy, as they didn't sleep well all night and woke up several times.

"Yu Kai, Mingyue, come and eat."

"Mom, what's for breakfast?"

Yu Kang walked out sleepily, yawning several times in a row.

"What can I eat? Breakfast bought from the cafeteria."

"Weren't there any leftovers from last night?"

Yu Kang didn't like the food in the cafeteria; it wasn't much better than his mother's cooking.

"No more. With this weather, even if there were any left, they'd all spoil."

"Then scoop out some of the kimchi that your second sister brought earlier, otherwise we can't eat it!"

Mother Yu was so angry she wanted to slap Yu Kang twice. Why did he have to bring up such a sore subject? He really had no tact and only knew how to eat.

On the table were white rice porridge, cornbread, cold wild vegetables, and two dishes of pickled vegetables.

"Let's eat, or we'll be late."

"Sigh, if I weren't afraid of going hungry, I really wouldn't want to eat this. The cafeteria chef is really something, the steamed cornbread looks like lead balls, you could kill someone if you threw it from far away."

"Eat your food, why are you talking so much? You can't even shut yourself up while you're eating."

Yu Kang was still somewhat afraid of his mother; if she angered him, she would really beat him without hesitation.

Brother Yu and his wife gritted their teeth and slowly stuffed the cornbread into their mouths. Fortunately, there was porridge, which helped them swallow the bread with the pickled vegetables.

"Mom, don't bring me dinner tonight. I'm going to my second sister's house for a meal and I'll stay there tonight. An'an said she missed me yesterday."

Before the mother could react, Yu Kang had already run away, his schoolbag bouncing on his bottom.

After washing up, Mr. Yu sat down at the table to eat.

"Later, you can take the kids for a walk. It's a good season, lots of fruits are ripe. Just don't go too deep into the mountains."

"Okay, Dad. We can manage on our own. You can go to work without worry."

Yu's mother didn't say anything. She forgot to ask Yu Yin about the chicks yesterday, and it wasn't good to ask now. Otherwise, Yu Yin might eat people!

After a while, only Brother Yu and his wife were left in the house, silently eating their unpalatable meal.

"I'll go to the supply and marketing cooperative later and buy some food and supplies to send to Yu Yin."

"You're telling me to give in first? Why should I? I didn't do it on purpose!"

"What's this talk about bowing your head or not? What you did was wrong. Besides, your son and daughter have eaten and used so many good things from Yu Yin, and you yourself have eaten just as much. You saw it yourself, my mother's cooking skills; all those things were definitely prepared by Yu Yin. Shouldn't you return the favor?"

This time, Sister-in-law Yu remained silent.

After the children woke up, Sister-in-law Yu helped them wash up and then fed them breakfast.

"Mom, it's too hard, I don't want to eat it."

Anna took a bite of the cornbread, then spat it out on the table; it was awful.

"We can't waste food, let's eat it quickly."

When Anna saw that her father was really angry, she was a little scared and ate the cornbread bit by bit with her hands, looking aggrieved.

Yu Anze didn't say anything. He ate a mouthful of cornbread, a mouthful of white porridge, and some pickled vegetables. He ate quite well, but when he took another bite, he choked and his eyes rolled back.

Brother Yu was furious. Sister-in-law Yu couldn't argue with him, so she could only coax her daughter to eat the cornbread. Every now and then, she would even take a bite herself, because it was too hard and didn't taste good.
