On a dry morning, the sun shines brightly and feels warm on your skin.
Yu Yin had a good night's sleep. After getting up, she prepared breakfast for the mother and her two children. After they ate, she prepared things for Lu Erjie.
"Mommy, I need to pee."
"Mom, I'm about to pee."
Ta-da! Yu Yin quickly ran upstairs and pulled the two little ones down to make sure they didn't wet the bed.
"Mom, it's done."
"Mommy, I'm done peeing."
"Are you going to sleep or not? If not, go upstairs to change your clothes, wash your face, brush your teeth, and eat."
Yu Yin emptied the spittoon; the two little ones had peed a lot during the night, and the smell was really strong. She rinsed it twice with clean water to get rid of the smell, then put it upside down under the eaves to air dry.
"Mom, I'm not going to sleep, I want to read."
Pingping really loves reading. If it weren't for An'an teasing him and wanting to play together, he could be flipping through books all day long.
"Mom, have some candy."
An'an loves sweets, and not just sweets, but anything that tastes good. Her daily routine consists of eating, drinking, and playing. Except for sleeping, she's never still for a moment; she's always on the move.
After changing the two little ones' clothes and washing them up, the mother and her two children prepared to eat.
"Mom, you didn't get a bowl for Dad."
"I'm sorry, Mom forgot. I'll get it now."
Ever since Lu Shurui left to support agriculture, An'an has had to put a bowl in front of her father's bowl every time she eats. This daughter has been well-loved.
My child is almost two years old. Food is the main focus now, and he also drinks formula. He drinks at least three meals a day.
Each of them had a small wooden bowl, filled with oily millet porridge, steamed golden egg custard, and a small pancake. The two brothers started eating.
Yu Yin placed the cooled food in front of the two boys, giving each of them a wooden spoon, and let them eat by themselves. Since they were one year old, Yu Yin had been letting them eat their own complementary foods. If they couldn't use the spoon well, they could use their hands, which also helped to improve their finger dexterity.
Actually, only An'an uses her hands to grab things; she finds using a spoon too slow and prone to dropping it. Pingping never uses her hands; the little one is a clean freak, which is evident from a young age—she uses a spoon very steadily.
Letting children feed themselves isn't about saving time, but about developing their fine motor skills. While adults can feed them without making a mess, children enjoy eating more and feel a sense of participation. Yu Yin specially made several bibs to prevent her clothes from getting dirty. One day, her mother saw this and criticized Yu Yin for being wasteful, wasting fabric by making bibs. Yu Yin didn't argue; she just let it go in one ear and out the other.
After finishing their meal and cleaning up the mess, they fed the fallen rice grains to the chicks, with An'an dropping the most. Now, they've run off to play by the fruit trees. Lu Shurui has built a small swing, a rocking horse, a seesaw... it's almost like a mini amusement park.
Pingping was flipping through a comic book when An'an called her away again before she could even turn two pages.
"Brother, let's go play. Brother..."
Watching the two little ones' retreating figures, Yu Yin missed her older brother. When they were little, her brother would always call out to her tirelessly, "Sis, let's go play," pulling the speechless Yu Yin out of the house.
She stopped thinking about it. The children were playing in the yard, which was surrounded by plants that repel mosquitoes and snakes. Yu Yin wasn't worried about any danger, and the gate was tightly closed.
Yu Yin took out the blankets and clothes to air them in the sun and started rummaging through the things.
When Yu's mother and the others arrived, Yu Yin had just emptied the things out of the storage room and moved them to the yard, preparing to wrap them up properly to prevent damage.
"Slap slap..."
Yu Yin saw her mother, Yu Kang, and her eldest brother, a family of four, outside the courtyard.
I opened the door to let them in, then closed it again to prevent the children from running out on their own.
"What are you doing? You know your older brother and the others are leaving, are you preparing things for them?"
When Yu's mother saw what Yu Yin had brought out, it was all good stuff: dried mushrooms, dried fruit, honey, rice noodles, rice cakes... It was spread all over the floor, quite a lot.
"Big brother, are you going back?"
Yu Yin ignored her mother's words and did not respond to her.
"Yes, it will be more convenient if we go to Kunming with the military transport truck tomorrow."
"That's much more convenient. No need to reverse, and it's faster."
As Yu Yin spoke, she packed the items, tying them up one by one.
Anze and Anna were taken by Yu Kang to play with Ping An and An An. Yu's sister-in-law watched Yu Yin's actions and seemed to be thinking about something.
"Isn't this for your older brother?"
After looking at it for a long time, Yu's mother saw that Yu Yin had packed everything and then carried it into the house.
"No, this is for Second Sister Lu, it will be sent out later."
"Second Sister Lu, you're really siding with outsiders. You don't even have your own elder brother, but you're closer to outsiders than to your own family."
Yu's mother was displeased and spoke sarcastically. It was unclear whether she was going through menopause or if she had always been like this, but Yu Yin had always longed for maternal love and had neglected it.
"Mom, what are you saying?"
Brother Yu was anxious as he listened to his mother's words. He had finally managed to ease the tension, and he didn't want things to escalate again.
"Mom, are you here to cause trouble?"
"How am I picking a fight? It's true, your own brother came all the way back and is leaving, and instead of helping him pack some local specialties, you're packing so much for outsiders. What a waste of the milk powder and stuff your brother brought over, it's like feeding a dog."
Yu Yin was reminded of her mother's harsh words. A while ago, her older brother and his family had sent her some gifts – milk powder for the two children and some local specialties from Yang City. Yu Yin had already planned to give them some local specialties as well, as a return gift was essential.
"Mom, you don't need to tell me those things. Of course I'll return the favor with gifts from my older brother and the others. As for whether they're outsiders or not, I know how to distinguish them. To me, Second Sister Lu is not an outsider, and I'm willing to send her things."
