"Mom, I don't want to go to first grade."
In the morning, right after finishing breakfast, he quickly stated his request.
"Hmm? Why don't you want to?"
Yu Yin was a little confused. It had been quite a while since school started, so why was she feeling so out of sorts and not used to it?
“My teacher always tells me to slow down, slow down, but I’m fast, not slow.”
Yu Yin was a little confused by Kuai Kuai's quick answer and didn't quite understand what it meant.
She looked at Manman, "In the same class, do you know what that means?"
"As soon as get out of class is over, we run out in a flash. In PE class, we're always the fastest, leaving the other students far behind."
Gradually, I actually understood, and I explained it very clearly to my mother.
“Lu Xiangyang, you can go a little slower at school. If you go too fast, the teachers won’t be able to keep up with you.”
"Then why doesn't the teacher go faster?"
Little Lu Xiangyang asked in confusion, "He's just that fast, how come the teacher, who's an adult, is slower than him?"
"The teacher also has to take care of the other students in the class, and the other students are not as fast as you."
"Hey, they're not slow, so why are they moving so slowly?"
Lu Xiangyang sighed, somewhat puzzled.
Yu Yin knows that as children grow up, they will have their own ideas. They may not understand many things, but they also have their own convictions. She can't fully understand her children's thoughts either, but she won't impose her own ideas on them.
"Lu Xiangyang, hurry up, we're going to be late!" An'an came downstairs with her schoolbag on her back, calling out to him with a sigh as she walked.
"Okay, okay." Hearing his sister call him, he quickly stopped thinking about whether it was fast or slow. His older brother and sister were leaving, and he had to catch up.
Yu Yin looked at the energetic Kuai Kuai with amusement. The world of children is truly wonderful. They always have one problem or another, but they don't get caught up in them like adults.
After Kuai Kuai and Man Man started first grade, Lu Shu Rui and Yu Yin no longer needed to pick them up or drop them off. They followed their older sister and brother to and from school together every day, and the four children looked after each other and had each other's company.
They're a beautiful sight on the road too!
Yu Yin and Lu Shurui grabbed their books, hopped on their bicycles, and headed to class; all six members of their family were students.
Grandma Lu has been preoccupied these past few days, and it's unclear what she's thinking.
"Shurui, have you noticed that Grandma seems to have something on her mind these past few days?"
"Really? I didn't notice. I'll go down and ask. Tell me what's wrong, so we don't get upset."
"Okay, go ask."
Yu Yin and Grandma Lu are still a step apart; if something really happens, she should be able to talk to her own grandson.
"Grandma, are you asleep?"
"No, Shurui, come in."
"What's wrong? Is something the matter?"
The elderly couple were quite surprised. What could be the matter so late at night?
"Grandma, you've seemed a bit down these past few days. Is something on your mind?"
The elderly couple exchanged glances, and Grandpa Lu understood what was going on.
“Your grandma is missing your aunt a bit; she wrote to say they’re coming back.”
"Aunt and the others are coming back. Is it confirmed this time?"
"Yes, it's confirmed, the tickets are all bought." Grandma Lu felt a pang of heartache thinking of her daughter, who had followed her son-in-law to support the Third Front construction for over ten years. Aside from returning home once, the only other contact she made was through letters.
"Shurui, Grandpa and I have discussed it and we're thinking of moving back to the old house. That way, when your aunt comes back, she'll still have a place to visit."
"Grandma, please don't say that, Aunt..."
"Shurui, let Grandma finish what she has to say. I know you and Yinyin are both good children, but things can't be done this way. You have a big family, and your aunt and her family have a big family too. If Grandpa and I are going to live here, it will be inconvenient for them to come and go."
Grandpa Lu thought about things more deeply. Lu Wei and the others had been gone for over ten years, and had three or four children. They hadn't come back much during those years, so their relationship had become somewhat distant.
Especially the children; they'll all run to Shurui's place, causing unnecessary trouble for their family. They've enjoyed family life these past few years and shouldn't burden their children any further.
Grandpa Lu understood that he had three sons and one daughter, and now that they were getting old, if they really needed care, it would be the sons and daughters' responsibility, not his grandsons'.
Lu Shurui knew that her grandparents had made up their minds and there was no possibility of changing them.
"Grandpa, don't rush to move. Tomorrow I'll ask Brother Huang next door to tidy up the house properly so it will be more comfortable to live in."
“Okay, anyway, your aunt and the others won’t be back for another ten days or so. It’s good to tidy up a bit; it hasn’t been done in years.”
Knowing what was on her grandmother's mind, Lu Shurui didn't say anything more and went back to her room.
"How did it go? Did Grandma say anything? What happened?"
“My aunt and her team finished their support work in the Third Front and are coming back. My grandparents have decided to move back to their old house so it will be easier for my aunt to come home.”
"aunt?"
Yu Yin was a little confused. She knew that Yu Shurui had an aunt. She had only heard about it when Yu Shurui was giving birth to Ping An An and the two were exchanging information about their families. They hadn't been in contact since.
“My aunt is two years younger than my third uncle and she was a college student. My aunt and uncle were classmates. In 1965, they went to support the construction of the Third Front. They haven’t come back much over the years.”
"Did your aunt's children go too?"
“They all went. At that time, we responded to the call to settle down in the frontier, so we took them with us.”
More than ten years have passed in the blink of an eye.
