Chapter 153 Things Are Getting Troublesome

After eating the big crab, the fragrance of osmanthus flowers gradually dissipated!

Shanghai has entered a mild but chilly winter. Influenced by the subtropical monsoon climate, winter temperatures in Shanghai generally do not drop below zero. Snow occasionally falls, but it is mostly sleet.

The northeasterly wind blowing from the sea brought gusts of cold air, chilling you to the bone.

There was no heating indoors, and the children were not used to the climate. As soon as winter came, several children caught colds one after another.

I don't know if it's because they're twins, but Pingping started having a runny nose and cough first, and then An'an started too.

Yu Yin dared not take it lightly; this was the first time in so many years that her two children had such severe cold symptoms.

That night, Yu Yin arranged for Ping An and An An to sleep in one room, while Kuai Kuai and Man Man slept in another, keeping them separate. Yu Yin cuddled An An in the lower bunk, while Ping Ping slept in the upper bunk by herself.

In the middle of the night, Yu Yin felt very hot and touched her; An An had a fever.

Yu Yin quickly got up and touched Pingping's forehead; he also had a fever.

"Lu Shurui, Lu Shurui..."

Yu Yin got dressed and called Lu Shurui to get up.

"Yinyin, what's wrong? Does the child have a fever?"

"Yes, both Ping An and An An have fevers, they're very hot, they need to be taken to the hospital."

Yu Yin had already dressed An'an, and the child, still half asleep, was quite cooperative.

"I'll dress Pingping, you take the money, and we'll leave now."

Lu Shurui carried Pingping off the bed, dressed her, and went downstairs.

"What's wrong?"

Grandma woke up too.

“Ping An and An An had a fever, so Shu Rui and I took them to the hospital. Grandma, Kuai Kuai and Man Man are still sleeping. I checked on them, and they're fine. If we hadn't come back this morning, we would have let them stay home and not go to daycare yet.”

"Okay, I got it. I'll go upstairs to sleep in a bit."

Grandma was worried. What if the child woke up and couldn't find anyone? She would be terrified.

Lu Shurui and Yu Yin rode their bicycles, each carrying a child, towards the hospital.

The nights in Shanghai are very cold; the wind stings your face!

"Mom, are you cold?"

"Mommy isn't cold. An'an, sit still and don't fall asleep, or you might fall."

Yu Yin reminded An'an, worried that if she fell asleep, she might lose her grip and fall off the car seat, which would be very dangerous.

Lu Shurui, who was behind him, was also reminding Pingping not to fall asleep.

Fortunately, the hospital wasn't too far from home; it only took about 20 minutes to get there by bike.

"Doctor, my child has a fever."

The doctor on duty immediately perked up when he saw the family of four enter, took out his stethoscope, and had the child sit at the table.

"Come on, open your mouth." The doctor looked at An'an's throat and listened with a stethoscope.

The child has a slight sore throat, but there are no abnormal sounds in the lungs, so it's not pneumonia.

Then the doctor took out a thermometer and had An'an take her temperature. The doctor also examined Pingping.

The symptoms are the same.

After taking their temperatures, An'an had a high fever of 39 degrees Celsius, and Pingping had a high fever of 39.5 degrees Celsius.

The doctor said to give me a fever-reducing injection, prescribe some medicine, and let me rest at home for a few days. He advised me to observe the fever and that if it subsided, I would be fine. He also advised me to drink plenty of warm water.

The doctor took out two small syringes, drew up the medicine, and asked Pingping and An'an to pull down their pants a little. These were muscle injections, to be inserted into their buttocks.

After the treatment, Yu Yin saw tears in Pingping and An'an's eyes.

After getting the medicine, the family of four rode their bicycles home.

After arriving home, I gave Ping An and An An cold medicine, and each of them drank a glass of warm water. I also put hot water bottles in their beds, and the two children fell into a drowsy sleep.

Half an hour later, Yu Yin touched herself and thankfully, the fever had subsided.

When Kuai Kuai and Man Man woke up in the morning, their noses were a little stuffy, so Yu Yin quickly gave them some cold medicine. She told them to stay home and rest today and not go to daycare, as this is the peak season for colds.

After having breakfast, Lu Churui rode his bicycle to school to ask for leave for himself and Yu Yin. All four children were unwell, and he was worried that Yu Yin wouldn't be able to take care of them alone, especially since Sister Ma was also responsible for cooking.

After breakfast, Pingping and An'an were much better.

My nose is still stuffy and my throat hurts, but thankfully I don't have a fever anymore.

Lu Shurui rode his bicycle out and bought two large bags of charcoal. He lit two braziers, one in his grandfather's room and the other in their own room upstairs.

Yu Yin was worried that her child would pass on his cold to his grandparents, so they led the child to rest in the room, read books, and play games.

The four children recovered one after another, and five or six days had passed. Yu Yin also needed to hurry back to school, as there was less than a month left until the final exams.

December 18, 1978, a historically significant date.

The Third Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee announced that the country would begin to implement a policy of domestic reform and opening up to the outside world.

China's domestic reforms began in rural areas. In November 1978, Xiaogang Village in Fengyang County, Anhui Province, implemented the household contract responsibility system (the "big contract system"), which involved "distributing land to households and assuming responsibility for their own profits and losses," thus opening the curtain on China's domestic reforms.

Yu Yin was quite concerned about this matter. After seeing the news in the newspaper, she had some small plans in mind, but she still needed an opportunity.

The timing isn't right either. Domestic reforms are mainly aimed at rural areas, and opening up to the outside world seems to be delayed until the second half of next year, though Yu Yin can't quite remember.

Although Yu Yin also paid attention to the affairs of the educated youth, the mountains were high and the emperor was far away, so the information spread was a bit slow, unlike in later years when information exploded and could not be stopped.

Only Aunt Huang from next door would occasionally come over to sit and talk to Yu Yin about the children who hadn't returned to the city yet. It was as if seeing Yu Yin and the others gave them hope.
