Chapter 31 Prisoners

Chapter 31 Prisoners

Gao Huan couldn't understand what Guan Zhiwei was saying, but he knew that he wouldn't have to face death again.

That feeling was awful.

Severe pain, cardiac arrest, and cessation of breathing.

He clutched his chest and coughed violently. A smear of blood stained his lips a deep crimson, a pale yet vibrant color, making him look like a gaudy ghost dressed in mourning.

Everyone says that one should live in the face of death. He thought he had seen through life and death, but after experiencing life and death several times, his desire to live reached its peak.

"Do you need me to kill all the people outside for you?" Guan Zhiwei asked considerately.

"No need, I'll handle it."

He didn't even have time to savor the aftertaste of death; he had to endure its shadow.

He had to use his limited abilities to protect his subordinates, who were as vulnerable as straws in the face of the terrifying woman.

She pulled out a handkerchief, wiped away the blood, and, supporting herself against the wall, walked out step by step, pushing open the door.

The sunlight fell on me, so dazzling that I flinched and my eyelashes trembled. The overwhelming light felt like a blessing of new life.

There were many soldiers outside, who saluted him as they saw him. Guan Zhiwei stood behind him, in his shadow.

"He Peng had treacherous intentions and has been executed. Where is the deputy captain?" His voice was indifferent.

"Your humble servant is here." The vice-captain stepped forward hesitantly.

This group of people, originally led by He Peng, were suddenly thrown into a state of unease by the news that the criminal had been executed.

Gao Huan seemed oblivious to their ulterior motives and said gently, "From today onwards, you will take He Peng's place as my personal guard captain. Also, take out a hundred ingots of silver from the garage and distribute them to everyone as a reward for their hard work."

The captain was overjoyed. As long as there was money to be made, it didn't matter who he followed.

"Thank you, my lord! We will serve you to the death!"

Human nature is not a pre-written script where loyalty is predetermined. People have their own ulterior motives, they weigh the pros and cons, and they can act impulsively, but it is all driven by greed.

He Peng followed him away from the main force, transporting grain, goods, and treasures. At first, he was simply following orders, but even if he never intended to kill Si Lang and plunder, he must have secretly harbored thoughts of undermining the frail young master. He probably felt that his opportunity had arrived.

Perhaps even he himself didn't realize that his words were gradually revealing a rebellious streak.

This is human nature; the desire to improve is inevitable.

Those who already hold great power will seek even greater power.

If Grand Commandant Gao is like this, how could Colonel He be an exception?

Gao Huan thought he was about to die and didn't care about anything else, but now everything seems different.

The good news is, he won't die.

The bad news is that he was killed repeatedly by a horrible woman.

He turned around.

Guan Zhiwei sneered at him from the shadows, a chilling and terrifying sight.

A chill crept up from my ankles, making my heart tremble.

Oh well, it's just suffering. Isn't the purpose of being born into this world to suffer?

He's like a flower; he's come to terms with it.

It carries a hundred different systems, representing that Guan Zhiwei has died ninety-nine times and was resurrected for the hundredth time.

She was like an insect trapped in a spider's web; even if she fought back and killed the spider, she couldn't change her fate of being unable to move.

Gao Huan's appearance brought hope; he was able to come back from the dead. What secrets are hidden behind this illogical event?

There is no doubt that there is a close connection between her and him.

She wanted to invite the other person to be her teammate in cracking the stupid system, and for this she showed her brightest smile - I am very kind, let's forget the unpleasant past and become partners in solving the puzzle.

Before she could even make a request, Gao Huan offered to stay.

He said, "I am willing to contribute my money to expand the house. I wonder what Dr. Guan thinks?"

Guan Zhiwei felt that as long as a way home could be found, she was willing to indulge his every idea, especially since this idea wasn't bad.

"I'll do whatever you say."

Gao Huan began designing his own prison, trying to make it as comfortable as possible. He even designed several extra rooms to prevent overcrowding. The kidnapper was obviously a poor man and didn't want to sleep on the streets; prisoners have their dignity.

Building this house properly was one of the few things he could fight for in his long and painful life.

He was very melancholy.

The second brother's family expanded their house and built a new one. All they needed to do was provide meals, and the villagers would come to help. With the addition of the fifty soldiers, the house was quickly built from the ground up.

The walls were made of mud bricks, a mixture of soil, straw, and water, resulting in thick walls that were warm in winter and cool in summer. The house was shaped like a "回" (hui) character, with the main house divided into three rooms. The long rooms on either side served as communal sleeping areas, each capable of cramming in more than twenty people. There was also a small room near the entrance for the soldiers on guard duty to sleep.

They marveled at how nice the house was; no one in the village had ever seen one like it.

Those old men who had previously given up on marrying their daughters to Hei Lao Er after hearing that the bear was killed by Xiao Guan, not Hei Lao Er, had their hopes rekindled.

Suddenly, he had a house and a wife, and it seemed that the second brother had become the biggest winner in this chaos.

The second brother was moved to tears. "I can't believe I can live in such a nice house one day. If my parents knew, they could rest in peace even in the afterlife."

Gao Huan silently watched everyone work. He set up a small table in the courtyard, brewed hot tea, and lit a charcoal brazier under the table to keep warm.

In his view, this very simple house was still lacking in quality—it needed blue bricks and gray tiles, wooden beams and pillars, stone foundations, wood carvings, brick carvings, and painted decorations. With this foundation, and by adding a garden, pavilions, terraces, towers, galleries, water features, and artificial hills, it could be called a good house.

"Si Lang," Hei Lao Er said, scratching his head sheepishly, "the main house has three rooms, and the one with the best light is the north-facing one. You can stay in that room. It's all thanks to you that I have such a nice house."

Gao Huan smiled and nodded: "Thank you for your generosity, Second Brother."

With just one sentence, the second brother was completely bewildered, his face turning red with embarrassment.

Madam Feng, however, saw things more deeply. She believed that there was no such thing as a free lunch. This Fourth Master was so generous and even showed his intention to stay permanently, clearly because he had taken a liking to Doctor Xiao Guan's medical skills.

She leaned closer, a little embarrassed, and said, "Xiao Guan, could you teach Atu some medicine? That way he can have a job in the future."

"Medical skills..." She really doesn't know anything about it.

Seeing her hesitation, Madam Feng immediately said, "I was just mentioning it casually. This child is slow-witted and may not be able to learn it."

Guan Zhiwei scratched her head: "Actually, medical skills aren't that important, otherwise, how could Hua Tuo have died?"

But if Hua Tuo had the ability to beat Cao Cao to a pulp, Cao Cao would definitely have let him perform brain surgery quietly, without worrying about medical disputes.
