Chapter 11 Working People

Chapter 11 Working People

"Xiao Guan, here you go—"

Brother Yao shouted, breaking the silence. He threw a knife, which Guan Zhiwei caught. With a flick of her wrist, the cold light flashed and disappeared into everyone's eyes.

Black Second Brother raised his sledgehammer and yelled, "Waaaaah!" He chased after the Imperial Guards like a bear, baring his teeth and brandishing his claws.

This was a group of terrified people who abandoned their armor and fled in panic.

Guan Zhiwei didn't chase after her. She looked down at her clothes with a frown, and saw that the patch Yao Daya had mended had been torn open again.

Two people in the distance were whispering to each other.

"Xiao Guan doesn't seem too happy." The second brother of the gang was all alone, but he was still whispering in Yao Ge's ear.

Are you angry that we came out late?

"Her actions were so sudden; it takes time for people to process what she's doing."

The second brother defended himself, his face flushing red with embarrassment.

He was perfectly clear-headed; he was just timid. His legs were trembling as he listened to the noises outside.

It took a lot of effort to convince myself to come out with Yao Da.

Just seeing the blood flowing everywhere and the corpses strewn all over the ground made him want to kneel down.

He's grown so big and strong for nothing. His first reaction to the situation is to run away, regardless of whether there are people behind him.

"Alright." The second brother was almost broken: "Xiao Guan, let me tell you the truth, I don't dare to kill anyone."

Guan Zhiwei was lamenting the wound that had just been repaired when she heard this. She looked up and nodded as if it were the most natural thing in the world: "If you dare to kill someone, why bother working so diligently?"

In this era of moral decay, the willingness to work diligently is a truly rare quality.

Working people possess the purest souls in the world.

The second brother, in a daze, said, "...That makes sense."

"Come back quickly, the fighting is too loud, I'm afraid it will attract more people."

Brother Yao beckoned the two of them back into the house.

"Wait a minute, you guys go back first." Guan Zhiwei squatted down and removed the armor and picked up the knives from the corpses one by one. You can't leave the looted equipment untouched; it's all money.

Brother Yao couldn't believe it; at a time like this, she was still thinking about that little thing.

I decided to go over and help pick them up.

Guan Zhiwei said warily, "I killed all of these people, so the spoils should be mine."

"Would I steal your stuff?" Brother Yao was speechless.

"It's hard to say," Guan Zhiwei thought to herself, "Bosses are usually no good."

They moved their things back into the house, locked the door, and the second brother moved some things to block the door.

It's a bit strange that Guan Zhiwei objected and refused the "gift" offered to her.

Yao said she was the one who was confused, but the most confusing thing was the situation.

“I have a feeling that something is wrong. Although these people are dressed as Imperial Guards, they don’t feel like Imperial Guards.”

Later, small groups of Imperial Guards fled from various alleys, looking like they were running away in a panic.

The city gates were closed under martial law, and the tolling of the bells echoed throughout the city. Even someone like Guan Zhiwei, who was not directly involved, knew that things were about to escalate.

Another day and night passed, and at dawn someone started banging a gong.

"General Gao is wise and brave. He stormed into the palace, rescued His Majesty, and killed the rebels. The remaining bandits disguised as Imperial Guards have infiltrated the civilian population. Everyone is reporting on each other. If anyone is found hiding, their entire family will be implicated."

The sound came from near and far, wandering through the streets and alleys; different voices, the same words, rose and fell throughout the city.

Amidst these sounds, every household opened their windows and poked their heads out, as if the city had been revived.

Later, the imperial court issued a notice, which was read aloud by literate people.

The gist of it is that Wang Yong, a henchman of Yuwen Huai, gathered military officers to rebel, took the emperor hostage, seized control of the palace, and his men replaced the Imperial Guards.

Not long after, General Gao, who was far away in Yingzhou, returned with his troops and wiped out Wang Yong's faction. A small number of defeated soldiers fled and looted farmhouses on their way out.

But once the city is closed, it won't be long before all the rebels are found.

His Majesty, moved by General Gao's achievements, bestowed upon him the title of Grand Commandant, the head of all military officers, and rewarded him with countless gold, silver and jewels.

The former mansion of Grand Tutor Yuwen became the residence of the other party, and those young women returned to that mansion to serve another master.

With the stabilization of the imperial court, the people breathed a sigh of relief and could begin to live normal lives again.

All the shops opened, and people came and went on the streets. The people were like grass growing lush and green after a storm.

Guan Zhiwei continued hammering the iron, making the air feel scorching hot.

Blacksmith shops don't just make weapons; in times of peace and prosperity, they make even more farm tools.

It is said that spring sowing and autumn harvest do not mean that farmers can be lazy in the summer. On the contrary, they have to work even harder, under the scorching sun, carrying hoes, weeding the fields again and again, and watering the fields with their sweat.

Sweat drips to the ground and shatters into eight pieces; upon seeing this, court officials are compelled to compose a poem of sympathy for the farmers.

"Brother Yao, could you tell her I'm really hot?" Blackie wiped the sweat from his face with his clothes, which were soaked through.

Brother Yao kept fanning himself: "You think I'm not hot? You dare to say that?"

In the sweltering summer, the blacksmiths usually go shirtless, but this year, Guan Zhiwei came along.

She's a girl, and a killing machine at that; who would dare take off their clothes?

Black Second Thug shoved Dog Tooth, "You're always hanging around her, go talk to her."

"I dare not." Dogtooth immediately admitted defeat.

The second brother, being wicked, said, "What are you afraid of? She's just a young girl. You're both the same age. You can talk to each other."

Dogtooth curled his lip—she's just a little girl~

She's just a young girl, why don't you dare tell her?

You're kidding me. Do you really think I know nothing?

“I heard that bandits broke into the house of an official in the city and killed the whole family. I also heard that his steward bought forty catties of firewood from Xiao Guan, but only paid him thirty copper coins.”

Everyone was startled.

The second brother said awkwardly, "No way, Xiao Guan... no way... just a little less copper coins..." He couldn't continue. He remembered that day when the escaped Jinwuwei rushed to the door and made Guan Zhiwei chop up heads like cabbages.

Then they would strip off their clothes, search their bodies for money, and squeeze out every last bit of value.

Those souls who wandered the road to the underworld had no money to bribe Ox-Head and Horse-Face.

Dogtooth snorted inwardly. "Can't? If that's not possible, how did Yan Silang die? He just had Xiao Guan's pay docked!"

Guan Zhiwei suddenly glanced in their direction.

The crowd scattered like startled birds.

Faced with the pleading eyes of the crowd, Yao Ge finally had no choice but to walk up to Guan Zhiwei and say with a forced smile, "Stop hitting them, let's deliver a shipment. The Zhou family in Qinghe ordered a batch of knives for guarding their house. Gouya knows the address, you two load them onto the truck and deliver them there, then settle the bill."

"Brother Yao."

"Hmm?" Yao Zhuang's heart tightened; he was actually scared too.

"Aren't you hot, all bundled up like this in the middle of summer?" Guan Zhiwei asked, puzzled.
