Chapter 149 Mother

Chapter 149 Mother

Sunlight streamed in, making it clear that dust particles were swirling around. The windows were sealed with iron mesh and bars, resembling a layer of transparent fish scales.

Guan Zhiwei opened her eyes and saw this scene. She sat up from the hospital bed.

My head hurts.

The point where her memory stopped was when she split open her own head with a knife and pulled out the system.

She quickly touched her head; it was completely healed. Whew.

"System, where have you taken me again? Come out now!"

There was no response; it was completely silent.

Did she really take down the system with just a kitchen knife?

Is that why she returned to modern society?

This is a small room with only a single bed and a cabinet. The top of the cabinet is filled with books, and the bottom is closed, presumably for storing clothes.

Guan Zhiwei cautiously looked around when she suddenly heard footsteps and the sound of a lock being opened at the door. Then the door was pushed open, and a woman wearing a mask walked in.

She was a middle-aged woman, wearing a gray hat, a sweater, jeans, and a coat draped over her arm; she was thin. She was carrying a plastic bag filled with oranges.

"mom--"

She couldn't see the face clearly, but she knew it was her mother. Tears instantly filled her eyes, and everything in front of her blurred.

All I saw was oranges falling to the ground, scattering everywhere with a clatter.

Her mother appeared beside her and hugged her tightly. "Zhiwei, what's wrong? Zhiwei?"

Guan Zhiwei reached out and pulled off her mask, revealing a familiar face. She cried and laughed at the same time, saying, "I knew it! As long as I could see you again, I would definitely recognize you. Even if hundreds or thousands of years had passed, I would still recognize you! Mom! I'm finally back, Mom!"

The sound of crying is contagious; her mother hugged her and cried uncontrollably as well.

"What about your illness?"

"Alright, everything's alright, the bone marrow transplant is a match."

"That's good!"

Guan Zhiwei breathed a sigh of relief; her mother was alright.

Her heart suddenly jumped again, and she trembled with nervousness: "Have you...did they ever consider that I took the money and ran away?"

The mother's face was covered in tears, and she was almost swearing to the heavens: "No, you are my good daughter. I am so sick that I am dying. You would not abandon me. So as soon as you disappeared, I knew that something must have happened to you, so I called the police."

ah--

My mom didn't suspect me at all.

"Your second and third aunts have never doubted you. They have been desperately looking for you, even stopping their work to search for you everywhere, afraid that something might have happened to you!"

Guan Zhiwei burst into tears: "Mom, I've been kidnapped by the system! It took me to ancient times and made me work for it! I refused to listen to it, so it scared me. It put me in a place where I died, and then automatically filled in the background for me, saying that I took the money and ran away to squander it, not caring about my life or death. My second aunt slapped me, it hurts so much."

"Where does it hurt? Let Mom rub it for you." Her mother hugged her so tightly that her body trembled.

"It hurts everywhere, it hurts everywhere! I was thrown onto the battlefield and killed so many people, you know, I can't even kill a chicken, Mom!"

"Of course I know, you're a good boy, you're Mommy's good boy!"

Guan Zhiwei kept sobbing until she felt dizzy. She lay down on the bed and fell asleep under the influence of a heavy sense of weariness.

When she woke up, it was around five or six in the afternoon. It was already dark, and the room was pitch black. The streetlights outside shone a little light, but it was very weak. She felt like she had been abandoned by the whole world.

She stood there blankly for a long time before she remembered that she seemed to have seen her mother.

Where is Mom?

It was quiet all around, there was nothing there. After listening for a long time, all I could hear was my own heavy breathing.

In the darkness, only a cabinet stood there, silently watching her.

"System? Is this your doing again?" Guan Zhiwei banged her head hard; it hurt.

The system remains silent.

Ever since she split open her head and reached in to stir things up, the system has been quiet.

She suspected that the system was still hiding somewhere in her body, but it was afraid of being exposed, so it remained silent.

The breathing sounds were getting heavier.

There was a strange smell in the air.

It's so quiet.

It felt like I was just having a brief dream, and then I was thrown into some unknown place.

I'm about to hate it to death.

Guan Zhiwei jumped off the bed, barefoot. There were no oranges on the floor, and her mother wasn't in the room either. It was all fake, the system was lying to her again!

She first groped her way to the door in the dark and tried to open it, but it was locked. No matter how hard she pulled, there was only a clanging sound.

She's been locked up!

We can't just sit here and wait to die!

She took a piece of clothing from the closet, wrapped it around her fist, and then slammed it against the window with all her might, bang bang bang!

She smashed the window open, shards of glass scattering outside. The biting wind howled, feeling like fists punching her in the face, making her face sting from the cold, but she didn't give up.

There was another layer of barbed wire on the outside. With a combat strength of 100, it was just a matter of course for her to pry the barbed wire apart with her bare hands.

Just as she was about to do so, a ray of light shone on her face from outside.

"What are you doing?! Go back now! My God, don't jump off the building!" the security guard shouted frantically.

A commotion erupted outside the door, which was then opened from the outside. A man in a white coat stretched out his hand and directed the young man behind him: "Quickly pull her down! Give her a sedative!"

"No need, I'm very calm!" Guan Zhiwei sniffed, then laughed heartily. As long as someone is there, that's fine.

Then she was given a sedative.

Perhaps they were worried that she wasn't calm enough.

The world was spinning, and she felt dizzy, but she didn't want to sleep. She didn't want to close her eyes. Her eyes were wide open as she struggled against the drowsiness.

"Knowing the subtle—"

The sound came from the horizon.

Guan Zhiwei tried to open her eyes wide and murmured, "Mom."

Mom leaned closer, her unique scent filling the air, her voice sometimes loud, sometimes soft: "What did you say?"

There are no oranges on the ground.

"I waited until you were sound asleep before picking up the oranges one by one, then I went out and locked the door."

Oh, I see.

Guan Zhiwei finally fell asleep peacefully, but as she slept, a doubt arose again.

My mom washes the fruit and puts it by my bed. She picked up all the oranges, so why didn't she leave them in the room? How am I supposed to eat them if she doesn't leave them?

Is she really the mother?

"Why?"

Guan Zhiwei suddenly opened her eyes, her eyeballs bloodshot. "Why didn't you leave the oranges behind!"

The woman was startled awake while watching over her mother, who was dozing off by the bedside.

Then, her mother peeled a plate of oranges for her, and Guan Zhiwei sat obediently on the bed and ate the oranges.

She said somewhat embarrassedly, "I'm just being paranoid. I used to be an emperor, you know, it's an occupational hazard."
