Chapter 29 The Young Master of the Gao Family
Guan Zhiwei rode her horse slowly back to the village.
At the village entrance, Gouya squatted there, looking around. When he spotted the horse, he hurriedly ran over.
"Xiao Guan, a lot of people have come and taken over our house."
"The Chen family arrived so quickly?" Guan Zhiwei asked in surprise.
She had just killed someone, and the other party reacted quickly enough to be a deliveryman.
Dogtooth shook his head, his anxiety tinged with fear. "They didn't seem to be from the Chen family. Those people were dressed as soldiers, there were... about fifty of them. The leader said their master was ill and needed a miracle doctor to cure him, offering a large sum of money as a reward. It really was a large sum of money, I saw two or three hundred taels of silver. Everyone saw this good deal and pointed us to their house. Then they surrounded our house, and everyone was locked in the courtyard. I realized something was wrong, so I secretly slipped away."
"What a coincidence! I am the miracle doctor." Guan Zhiwei spurred the horse's flanks, and the horse trotted away, heading straight home.
You can't go back!
Dogtooth gritted his teeth, tears welling up in his eyes. His grandmother was also surrounded, but he couldn't let Guan Zhiwei go back to her death.
His hands were trembling, and he choked up as he said, "After I ran out, I saw them secretly kill those four Chen family guards. There was so much blood. They said they couldn't let the news get out. They dared to kill the Chen family guards, so what about us?"
"We can double-cross each other."
"ah?"
Guan Zhiwei quickly calculated that nearly fifty people, each with their own rations, had solved her immediate food shortage. Add to that their silver, swords, armor, carriages, and other belongings—they were incredibly well-off.
What's the difference between this and a pie falling from the sky?
"We're going to make a fortune!" she said excitedly.
...It seems like we could rob them.
Dogtooth was also caught up in Guan Zhiwei's excitement, and his wet tears were still wet.
He never expected that his mindset would change so quickly, from a mouse running away with its tail between its legs to a mouse that eats cats.
"They can kill, and so can we." Dogtooth opened the door to a new world.
Guan Zhiwei returned home excitedly. Dozens of carriages were parked at the gate of the courtyard, loaded with grain, fodder and cloth. He couldn't help but feel envious. Everyone was trying to make a living in the chaos of the world, living like a thoroughbred horse. They were the discerning judges of horses, while he was just a mediocre judge of horses.
"Dogtooth, didn't you like the carriage that the young master of the Gao family rode in? I'll get you one."
"Great!" Dogtooth's eyes lit up.
The two whispered to each other.
Soldiers on alert: "Who are you?!"
Dogtooth instantly switched to a sycophantic stance: "This is none other than the renowned Doctor Guan!"
Guan Zhiwei nodded with a reserved smile.
"Xiao Guan is back!"
Madam Feng and the others shouted with joy, tears streaming down their faces.
They weren't physically injured, but they looked unwell. Yan Chunsheng kept his head down, not daring to look up.
Atu was still holding a piece of pastry in his hand. It was so crumbly that it crumbled when he bit into it. Judging from its exquisite appearance, it must have been given to him by that noble person.
"Xiao Guan, there's something delicious, I'll save you a bite!" A Tu's mouth was watering.
"No need, no need, you eat, I'll go inside and eat." Guan Zhi smiled and pointed to the house, where there was probably even more food.
As they were talking, a man walked towards them. He was tall and strong, with regular features, and his walk exuded an aura of decisiveness and ruthlessness.
"You are the Divine Physician Guan? Appearances can be deceiving. My name is He Peng."
"There are so many people." Guan Zhiwei looked around. With so many people, this courtyard would be ruined if a fight broke out. Madam Feng had just set up a cucumber trellis.
"Don't worry, our military discipline is strict, we won't do anything reckless." He Peng led her into the house. "As long as Doctor Guan can cure my husband, everything is negotiable. If he can't, and if anything happens to my husband—"
Those words were loaded with meaning, and their threat was self-evident.
"Life and death are preordained; one must not be disrespectful."
A weak voice came from inside the house.
Guan Zhiwei went into the house, where a Luohan bed had been moved in by Rensheng.
The ornate and elaborate carvings on the daybed clashed completely with the dilapidated house, making it quite eye-catching. However, the first thing she noticed was the white-clad man sitting on the bed.
The skin is pale and lacks a healthy, delicate luster; it looks like the white of someone who has bled out.
He was rather thin, with a well-defined facial structure, cold and aloof features, and thick, slightly disheveled black hair that hung down. Through the strands of hair, a pair of deep and melancholic eyes were lowered.
The first impression he gives is that he is very tired, even breathing is tiring.
It was indeed very cold, but it wasn't winter yet, yet he was already wrapped in a thick white cloak, made of pure, unblemished down, tightly around his neck, making it hard for anyone to breathe.
"Are you the young master of Grand Commandant Gao's family?" Guan Zhiwei blurted out.
They had met, or rather, she had met him unilaterally.
She had smelled the fragrance emanating from him before; it was very faint and delicate, requiring careful appreciation, like the scent of autumn leaves.
With a snap.
The sound of weapons being drawn.
He Peng held the knife to Guan Zhiwei's neck, his killing intent overwhelming.
"Do not be rude."
"Our information must not be leaked."
Gao Huan remained silent; he had already said what he wanted to say.
He Peng was clearly unwilling, even reluctant, to put away his sword. He looked at Guan Zhiwei warily, ready to draw his sword again at any moment.
Guan Zhiwei showed no awareness whatsoever of being at their mercy, and continued to ask, "Do you know that Grand Commandant Gao is dead?"
"Cough cough cough."
Gao Huan coughed violently several times, and only after catching his breath did he slowly say, "I am indeed observing mourning for my father."
Guan Zhiwei pondered, "But you dare not return to the capital to pay your respects to him."
Gao Huan: "..."
That's true, but why did she say it out loud?
As everyone knows, Grand Commandant Gao escorted the large amount of jewels, grain, and silver he had plundered, along with his family and frail son, back home ahead of schedule. He was overconfident, believing that he would have no problems and would simply return to Yingzhou shortly after the other.
As a result, he was assassinated by a young woman whose name was unknown.
His soldiers were divided into two factions.
The troops led by Gao Huan also experienced internal strife after receiving news of the conflict halfway through their journey.
They disagreed on whether to return to the capital to join the eldest son, or to follow military orders and go to Yingzhou to join the Grand General.
For Gao Huan, neither choice is good.
Those people in the capital hate the Gao family to the core. Going back would be like walking into a trap, and the brothers would not have a good end. If he goes to Yingzhou to meet with General Zhi, the other side would not spare his life. The best outcome would be house arrest, which would be no less than a second trap.
Just as he was hesitating, a disturbance broke out. Fortunately, he remained vigilant and managed to escape with a small number of loyal men, escorting a shipment of goods away.
He didn't know where he was going, and to make matters worse, his frail body fell ill.
His subordinates inquired everywhere and took him to find famous doctors.
They met.
