Chapter 28 Chapter 28 You Just Sentenced Me to Death

Ms. Feng from HR had been met with some resistance from Su Yan. When she finally needed to check the leave records, she came running to the fourth-floor office and said with a smile, "Yingzi, have you finished checking the leave records?"

Su Yan was surprised. "Oh my God, Sister Feng, I forgot. But I still have two manuscripts for the secretary to write. I'm afraid I don't have time to help you, Sister Feng."

Sister Feng waved her hand. "No way. You've already been transferred, so there's no reason for you to work for me. Just give me your leave records, and I'll go back and check them myself. These are several years old, and I can't do it right away."

Su Yan pretended not to remember: "I didn't bring them with me. I left them in my old cabinet." Then she smiled and said, "By the way, Sister Feng, don't you have the key to your drawer?"

Sister Feng smiled awkwardly. "So everyone has one. I lost mine over a year ago and haven't gotten a replacement yet. So I came to borrow your key so I can get a replacement."

Su Yan then nodded and gave her the key.

Ming Fan, who was standing nearby, smiled brightly. After Sister Feng left, he said, "Sister Yingzi, did you know? The HR section chief gave her a lecture, and she wasn't convinced, so she started arguing. The secretary happened to be going downstairs to the cafeteria and overheard it. He said Sister Feng had no respect for organization or discipline."

"This Sister Feng is a veteran worker, and she seems to be taking advantage of her seniority. After being criticized so directly, she called in sick the next day and then took another week off. I heard the secretary lost his temper at the Party Committee meeting, complaining about the current climate in our factory and even asking Sister Feng to write a self-criticism."

Su Yan listened without saying anything and continued writing.

After changing shifts and moving to the fourth floor, Su Yan no longer saw Jiang Dayan except when he was getting food in the cafeteria. She felt happy every day. After work, she would pick up Yan Zi from kindergarten and take her back to Xiaoheyan. There were no annoying neighbors next door eavesdropping. With the door closed, she could cook whatever she wanted without worrying about the strong aroma arousing the neighbors' suspicion.

On Saturday afternoon, Qin Zhanwu called the office and reminded Su Yan: "Don't forget, we'll meet at the military academy gate at ten o'clock on Sunday morning."

Su Yan was surprised and asked, "How do you know my office phone number?"

Qin Zhanwu laughed and said, "Of course it was the kind-hearted people in your unit who told me. Since you wouldn't tell me anyway, I had no choice but to beg others for help."

Su Yan not only didn't find it funny, but felt creepy, as if her every word and action was under the control of others, as if she was a transparent person. She immediately refused: "I don't have time, I can't go."

Qin Zhanwu didn't think anything was wrong and just said, "Your company doesn't have any activities this weekend, and you don't have to go to rehearsal. What are you doing on Sunday?"

Su Yan said impatiently: "I have something to do. Do I need to report to you one by one?" Then she hung up the phone.

Qin Zhanwu was scolded, but he didn't feel angry. He put down the phone with a smile and said, "You've been scolded, why are you talking so harshly?"

Then he made another call back. When Su Yan picked up the phone, she heard Qin Zhanwu say on the other end, "What do you want to eat? I'll bring some food over and cook for you."

Su Yan looked out the window and saw that no one was around. Ming Fan had gone home earlier because of something, and she yelled into the phone, "Qin Zhanwu, are you done yet? You promised me that you wouldn't come to our house to cook anymore. Are you not keeping your word? You're a PLA soldier, and you're forcing me to do what I want?"

Qin Zhanwu listened to her scolding but was not angry: "You were the first one to break your promise. My promise has prerequisites."

Su Yan was speechless and remained silent for a while before she said, "I think our personalities are not compatible and we are not suitable to be together anymore."

Qin Zhanwu shook his head: "We've only met a few times, and you're sentencing me to death just like that? A prudent judge shouldn't be so hasty."

Su Yan retorted, "I'm neither a judge nor a prudent person, and you're not my prisoner. I just want to say that for my future partner, perhaps I don't need to spend a long time examining and investigating him. Perhaps I can be sure at first sight. I'm sorry, I didn't feel this way when I first saw you."

Qin Zhanwu stood there and asked, "But, when we were at the dance, you were the one who saw me, pointed at me and said you wanted to dance with me?"

Su Yan said bluntly, "That was just a casual gesture to please my boss. In fact, I am slightly nearsighted. I can't see your face clearly at the distance of the ball."

Qin Zhanwu was silent for a moment, and even his voice became cold: "Even so, I don't have the slightest chance, right?"

Su Yan admitted: "There is no such thing as opportunity or no opportunity. It should be said that there is no need at all." After Su Yan finished speaking, she could only hear the faint breathing sound from the other side, and she felt relieved.

Qin Zhanwu put down the phone and said, "I understand!" He was completely unaware that Su Yan couldn't hear him.

He Zhixiang, who was sitting on a stool polishing his shoes, laughed at him, "Zhanwu, a forced melon is not sweet. If you pursue her yourself, you will just be met with her cold shoulder. If you really like that girl from the machinery factory, just call their boss and ask him to do her job. Wouldn't that be much more effective than running around like a headless fly?"

Qin Zhanwu snorted and forced a smile: "I can't do such a thing!"

He Zhixiang tried to persuade him, "What's the big deal? If everyone in the 29th Army were like you, it would take a lot of effort. After they marry you, they'll know what kind of person you are in two or three years. Didn't the director of the political department also ask for introductions and ask the leaders to do the work? They're living a good life now, and they're a loving couple. There's nothing shameful about that! Aren't we too old now to have that kind of time?"

Qin Zhanwu listened for a long time without saying anything. He took out a watch from the drawer and started to polish it.

He Zhixiang threw the shoe cream in his hand at him: "Zhanwu, did you hear what I said to you?"

Qin Zhanwu dodged by leaning to the side. "I heard you. My situation is different. Lu Yingzi is a determined person. If she doesn't want to do it, asking the leaders to do it is like forcing her to do something. In my case, I have to make her agree to it herself, and make her agree in person, and from the bottom of her heart."

He Zhixiang tilted his head and smacked his lips as he thought about this, then nodded: "Okay, then you'll have to put in a lot of effort."

Qin Zhanwu nearly shattered the glass dial, thinking as he did so. How could this be? Didn't she spot me first at the dance? Didn't she feel embarrassed and ask someone to dance with me? I asked her to give me a scarf in return, and she agreed. Doesn't that mean she likes me?

Su Yan put down the phone, locked all the documents on the desk in the cabinet, and was about to close the door and leave work when she heard the phone ring again. She picked it up in a bad mood: "This is the office of Jiangzhou Machinery Factory. What can I do for you?"

It was the secretary's voice on the other end: "Comrade Yingzi, I remember you majored in Russian in college, right?"

Su Yan said: "I majored in Russian, but I'm not very good at it."

The secretary said, "Don't be so modest. Let's put it this way. We have a welcome party tonight for Soviet experts, and you'll be the interpreter. I'll have the driver pick you up now. Are you still in the office? Yes, stay right there. I'll have the driver pick you up."

Although Su Yan is not a Russian major, thanks to her Russian ex-boyfriend, she can speak Russian quite well. Of course, this is limited to daily communication. If professional terminology is involved, Su Yan will definitely not be able to cope with it.

If the Soviet experts invited by the machinery factory talked about business, Su Yan would definitely be clueless. However, since it was a welcome party, they would definitely not talk much.

Su Yan left the workshop first and asked Uncle Song to pick up Yan Zi from the kindergarten and take her home. There was lunch prepared at home, so there was no need to worry about the two children going hungry.

After more than ten minutes, a car drove up to the building. Su Yan got in and asked, "Why did you ask me to be a translator? I'm a half-baked person and haven't even finished college yet."

The drivers at that time had all been with the leaders for many years. He said, "I don't know what the city government translator ate last night, but he has been having diarrhea all day. He accompanied the Soviet experts from the airport to the Friendship Hotel and kept running to the bathroom. Our Jiangzhou City is not a big place like Shanghai or Beijing, so it's not easy to find a Russian major on short notice. I made several calls, but no one came. Then the secretary remembered you and said that according to your file, you majored in Russian in college. Although you didn't graduate, you still know more than us. So I called you to give it a try. I didn't expect you to be called to help out before you even got off work."

Arriving at the Friendship Hotel, the driver took her to the second floor. Sure enough, inside a private room, among the factory leaders, sat a high-nosed Soviet man, who waved and shouted, "Cheers, cheers."

The accompanying leaders didn't understand anything, they just joined in the laughter and raised their glasses.

As soon as Su Yan entered, they pulled her over as if they had seen a savior and asked, "Can you translate what the Soviet expert said?"

Su Yan said, "Cheers, cheers, Chinese liquor is really good, even better than vodka." She then explained, "Vodka is a traditional Soviet liquor."

The secretary nodded and raised his glass. "This kind of liquor is called Maotai in China. It's only served to welcome distinguished guests. If Expert Lawnski likes it, you can take a case with you when you leave Jiangzhou."

Su Yan translated it truthfully. Moutai Su Yan didn't know how to translate it, so she just translated it literally. The Soviets loved wine, and when they heard it, they gave a thumbs-up: "The Chinese people are good friends of the Soviet people, good friends."
