Shen Yuan didn't linger at the examination hall for long; after seeing the results, she planned to go back.
The examination hall was in the north of the city, and her place was in the west of the city. They weren't very close, and it took several streets to get there. Shen Yuan just happened to want to buy some things along the way.
She went to a grain shop, bought several pounds of rock sugar, wrapped it in oil paper, and stuffed it into a bamboo basket. Then she went to a pastry shop, picked out a few kinds of pastries that the shopkeeper was selling off cheaply, and bought them to take home for breakfast.
Before long, Shen Yuan's bamboo basket was filled to the brim.
She was carrying a bamboo basket on her back and walking home when, just as she reached the street corner, a pair of hands suddenly reached out and covered her mouth and nose with a handkerchief.
It smells like a drug!
Alarm bells rang in Shen Yuan's mind, but the dose of medicine on the handkerchief was too strong. Before she could even take out the antidote from her bosom, she fainted.
The bamboo basket on his back also fell to the ground.
The man dressed in black night clothes saw that Shen Yuan was unconscious, so he carried her on his shoulder, leaped up, and quickly sped towards the south of the city, using the walls as footsteps.
When Shen Yuan opened her eyes again, she found herself in a completely unfamiliar mansion.
The room where she was held was probably a woodshed, with lots of wood and dry pine needles for starting a fire.
Shen Yuan's hands and feet were bound with hemp rope, and her mouth was stuffed with something. The dagger that was usually tied to her elbow was nowhere to be seen, which meant that the people who tied her up must have searched her body beforehand.
Who brought her here?
Was it the person who failed to kill her in the alley that night?
For the past two weeks, everything had been peaceful, and she thought the other party had given up. Little did she know that the other party had been secretly watching her whereabouts and seized her as soon as she was alone.
Although she was arrested, Shen Yuan did not regret coming out today.
Because people always have to go out. If she goes out early, she'll get caught; if she goes out late, she'll get caught too. She can't hide forever.
Only by figuring out who wants to kill her can she take targeted precautions.
Shen Yuan wanted to know who was trying to harm her, but she didn't want to die. So, after surveying her surroundings, she began to think of a way to escape.
It's been so long, Xiao Ling will definitely come out to look for her if he doesn't see her go back.
But she couldn't place all her hopes on Xiao Ling.
Shen Yuan bent down and rubbed her feet back and forth to take off her shoes, then tried to reach her toes with her mouth.
Although the pose was a bit difficult, she was flexible and managed to touch her face with her toes after a few tries.
So Shen Yuan put all her strength into her toes, clamped the burlap in her mouth between her toes, and pulled it out forcefully.
She tugged at it several times, and the burlap in her mouth was actually pulled out.
Shen Yuan gasped for breath, ignoring her aching cheeks, and put her hand to her mouth to use her teeth to untie the hemp rope on her wrist.
The hemp rope was as thick as a finger, not only tied very tightly, but also bound with a complicated knot.
The coriander made my gums ache.
But she dared not stop. Now that there was no one else in the woodshed, she had to hurry and get out.
Just then, footsteps suddenly came from outside the door.
She heard the person standing outside the door call out, "Madam!"
Shen Yuan pricked up her ears to listen to the sounds; there were at least two people guarding outside the woodshed.
Where are they?
"Reporting to Madam, she's inside, still unconscious."
Upon hearing this, Shen Yuan quickly picked up the burlap from the ground and stuffed it back into her mouth to prevent these people from noticing anything amiss when they came in.
But it wasn't what she expected; the person outside seemed to be hesitant to come in.
He only poked a hole in the window paper, as if trying to see her face clearly through that small hole.
Shen Yuan lay on the weeds with her eyes closed. Even so, she could feel a burning gaze on her, as if trying to burn her to the core.
The person who captured her was a married woman who particularly hated her... Who could it be?
Shen Yuan searched her mind carefully for the women she had known in both lifetimes, but couldn't come up with a solution.
Perhaps the light in the woodshed was too dim, because the woman standing outside the window couldn't see clearly, she walked to the door and pushed it open a crack.
Just as she was about to step inside, another urgent shout came from outside the door.
"Madam, something terrible has happened! Little..."
The woman quickly turned her head and gave the newcomer a warning look. The newcomer shut his mouth, leaned close to her, and whispered a few words in his ear.
Shen Yuan squinted, and through the crack in the door, she could only vaguely see one side of the woman's ear.
Apart from the red coral earring on her earlobe, nothing else could be seen.
"Throw the people into the moat."
The woman left these words behind and hurriedly departed.
Not long after, the door to the woodshed was pushed open again, and two men, one tall and one short, walked in.
Before they entered, Shen Yuan's hands and feet had been retied.
The room was dark. The two men glanced at her and then came over and picked up Chen Yuan.
Shen Yuan pretended to be unconscious, her body limply resting on the man's shoulder.
She felt herself suddenly lifted into the air, and then she heard the whooshing sound of the wind in her ears.
The night wind was cool, making Shen Yuan's cheeks sting. Moreover, the person carrying her, whether due to poor lightness skills or because he found her too heavy, was unsteady with each jump, causing her head to bump against his shoulder several times, knocking off the silk flowers and silver hairpins from her hair.
But Shen Yuan could only endure it.
They soon reached the moat, where the man carrying her put her down and dropped her on the ground.
Shen Yuan's head was buzzing from the fall. She knew that if she didn't wake up soon, it would arouse the suspicion of these people, so she opened her eyes groggily.
"Where...where is this? Who are you people?"
