Chapter 151 Pei Xingju is injured (Part 2)
Zhuang Wan stumbled along the way, not daring to look at the things she kicked. Holding her breath, she ran into the inner courtyard, only to find it brightly lit and everyone looking nervous.
"Guard Lu, how is your master?" Zhuang Wan saw Guard Lu standing in the corridor and walked over immediately.
Guard Lu glanced at the hem of her skirt, which was stained with blood, and jumped in shock: "Miss Zhuang is injured?"
"It's not my blood," Zhuang Wan said. "Where is your master? Where is he?"
Guard Lu was in the middle of ordering people to check everywhere to see if there were any fish that had slipped through the net. He took a moment to point to a door on the right and said, "The master is inside."
Zhuang Wan hurried over and almost tripped over the threshold when entering.
The room was small, the lights were dim, and the furniture was old, as if it had been arranged temporarily.
Pei Xingju was lying on the narrow bed, half of his body hidden by the gray curtains. The room was empty except for two servants wiping the blood off him.
When Zhuang Wan saw Pei Xingju's white undershirt soaked with blood, her heart skipped a beat.
"Where's the doctor?" she asked. "Has anyone been sent for him?"
The servant replied, "Miss Zhuang, Commander Lu has already sent for the doctor?"
"Where can we find a doctor?" Zhuang Wan hardly dared to look at Pei Xingju. The sight of him lying there covered in blood was too horrifying.
"This... I don't know, I have to ask Commander Lu."
"Then go ask, quickly!" Zhuang Wan said sternly, "Find out where they hired the doctor, and send someone who's able-bodied to carry him here within a quarter of an hour!"
The two servants usually served Pei Xingju and knew Zhuang Wan, but tonight was the first time they had seen her scowling and yelling. Not daring to delay, they dropped their handkerchiefs and ran out the door.
The room was quiet and the candlelight was dim. Zhuang Wan stared at the servant's departing figure for a long time. When she came to her senses, she found that her legs were weak.
After a moment, she bent over and sat down on the edge of the bed.
She slowly looked towards the person on the bed.
Pei Xingju lay there with a pale face, his body almost completely covered in blood, and something bright red still flowing out of his chest.
Zhuang Wan picked up the handkerchief in the basin, wrung it dry, and with trembling hands, she lifted his clothes and covered his chest with it, trying to stop the bleeding.
She suppressed the discomfort and panic in her stomach and turned her face away.
"Pei Xingju, please don't die. What will happen to everyone if you die?"
Although she knew that Pei Xingju was the male protagonist and should not die, what if? She had already traveled through time and many plot points had changed. What if Pei Xingju really died like this?
"Hold on, the doctor will be here soon, don't die!"
She carefully blocked the wound, and her voice trembled when she spoke.
Suddenly, something cold touched my wrist and then grabbed it.
Zhuang Wan was so frightened that she jumped up and screamed "Ah".
When I turned around, I saw Pei Xingju had already opened his eyes, looking helpless.
"Don't worry, you won't die."
After a moment, his brows knitted slightly: "But if you hold me down again, I'm afraid I'll really die."
Zhuang Wan quickly let go of her hand: "I...saw you bleeding profusely, and wanted to help you stop the bleeding."
"Aren't you unconscious?" Zhuang Wan looked at him carefully.
"You woke me up," Pei Xingju said, perhaps feeling pain and moving his body: "I won't die, there are no vital injuries."
"Don't move! Guard Lu has sent for a doctor, he'll be here soon!"
Seeing him wake up, Zhuang Wan breathed a sigh of relief.
"Why are you here? Didn't I tell you to stay put? Lixia is becoming more and more unreasonable..."
"It's not about Lixia. I heard you were injured and unconscious, so I came to see you. What happened tonight..." Zhuang Wan's mind was in a turmoil: "What happened? Was it Shen Zongji who did it?"
"It's not appropriate to bring this up now. Pour me a glass of water," he said.
Zhuang Wan hurried to the table to pour some water. She checked the teapot and saw that it was cold, so she carried the teapot out again.
When she came back, the doctor had already arrived. Besides the doctor, there were two officials waiting nervously inside the room.
Zhuang Wan peeked in for a moment and saw the doctor cutting open Pei Xingju's clothes with scissors. When she saw the sticky mass on his chest, she quickly turned away.
Guard Lu was standing outside the door. Seeing this, he called her quietly, "Miss Zhuang."
When Zhuang Wan walked out of the door, all the corpses and broken arms in the courtyard had been cleaned up, and several servants were cleaning with buckets of water.
But the smell of blood lingering in the air indicated that a fierce fight had taken place here.
Zhuang Wan whispered to Guard Lu, "Who is the assassin? Do you know?"
"The Lord of Liuli City, and... the two masters Xizhu and Xichang who serve Prince Liang, are here too."
"But you have fought against Xizhu and Xichang before, and you were able to handle them, weren't you?" Zhuang Wan asked.
Guard Lu said, "It's just Jingzhe and I here today. Pavilion Master Xue isn't here."
"He's not here. Where did he go?"
But after asking this question, Zhuang Wan felt that discussing this matter was pointless. Xue Gang wasn't Pei Xingju's bodyguard. As the head of Xuanzhao Pavilion, he naturally had many things to attend to. However... she couldn't understand why. Even without Xue Gang, Pei Xingju's martial arts skills were quite impressive. The book described several important assassination attempts he had endured, and he was able to handle them with ease.
But why is he injured so seriously today?
She looked at Guard Lu again, and Lu Huai scratched his forehead guiltily: "Miss Zhuang, what else do you want to ask?"
"That's not right..." Zhuang Wan asked, "Don't we still have Lixia? If you can't handle it, why send Lixia to protect me?"
Shen Zongji's target was Pei Xingju, so killing her was pointless, so he naturally wouldn't waste energy and manpower on killing her. But Lixia had previously said that Pei Xingju had sent her to protect him. What did she need to protect?
I always feel like there's something weird going on here.
At this moment, hurried footsteps could be heard from outside. Soon, a man wearing armor and carrying a long sword rushed in.
"I'm Xu Yongwang, the garrison commander of Hezhou. I've come here specially after learning that Lord Pei has been assassinated." He passed by Zhuang Wan and then bowed to Guard Lu. "Commander Lu, where is the assassin now?"
Guard Lu's expression was unusually stern: "General Xu is too late. The assassin has already escaped, and the lord is seriously injured."
General Xu was shocked when he heard this and was about to go into the house to see what was happening, but Guard Lu stopped him and said, "General Xu, the master is seriously injured and bleeding profusely. The doctor is treating him inside. Please wait outside the door."
"Yes, yes, yes," General Xu smiled awkwardly and knelt down outside the doorway. "Sir Pei, I was late in arriving to help, and I have failed in my duty."
No one responded from inside the house. He waited for a while, then stood up and stretched his neck to see what was going on inside.
The lights in the room were dim, and the two officials didn't know what they saw, and they looked nervous and worried.
