Chapter 112 Care

In the middle of the night, as the effects of the anesthetic wore off, Lu Jingze woke up from his deep sleep.

The excruciating pain in his chest made it impossible for him to fall asleep.

Seeing this, Wang Xiuxiu brought a bowl of hot porridge to his bedside, saying, "Eat something to distract yourself."

Lu Jingze nodded and, with Wang Xiuxiu's help, sat up halfway.

He moved slowly, and every movement aggravated his wound.

Wang Xiuxiu handed him the bowl of porridge and adjusted the position of the pillow for him.

Lu Jingze slowly finished his porridge, and Wang Xiuxiu handed him a cup of warm water to rinse his mouth.

He took the water glass, looked up at her, and suddenly smiled, "You're not that old, but you're very good at taking care of people."

As soon as the words left his mouth, he realized he had spoken out of turn.

Wang Xiuxiu was also of servant origin, so although this was an unintentional joke, upon closer examination it inevitably carried a sense of disrespect, and Lu Jingze was genuinely afraid that she would overthink it.

He was about to explain when he saw Wang Xiuxiu smile nonchalantly, her tone relaxed: "I've taken care of family members before, so I have some experience."

Seeing that she wasn't angry, Lu Jingze felt a little relieved and started chatting with her again: "Just let them take care of you. It's already midnight, why aren't you asleep?"

"The doctor said he gave you anesthetic powder, so you'll probably wake up in the middle of the night. I've been resting while you're sleeping. Your guards have been looking for us all day, so I've rested enough and came to take care of you for them."

Lu Jingze felt a warmth in his heart. "Thank you."

His gaze lingered on Wang Xiuxiu's face for a long time.

Wang Xiuxiu felt a little uncomfortable under his gaze, so she changed the subject and said, "By the way, you asked me to take good care of Lord Zhou. He suffered a lot yesterday. Although he survived, he was already in poor health and almost froze to death in the carriage."

Upon hearing this, Lu Jingze frowned.

Wang Xiuxiu thought he was in pain from his wound, so she quickly helped him lie down.

Lu Jingze waved his hand and said in a low voice, "It's nothing, I'm just a little upset thinking about it."

He paused, then continued, "Zhou Yuan'an is an important witness in the Liangzhou affair. He is indispensable for the final conviction, so even if the journey is fraught with difficulties, I will definitely bring him back to the capital."

Wang Xiuxiu nodded, indicating that she understood.

Lu Jingze became curious and asked her, "Aren't you curious about who those people were last night? And why they attacked us so brutally?"

"The one who ambushed us seems to have nothing to do with the one who finally surrounded and blocked us in the forest; otherwise, they would not have given us a chance to escape."

Lu Jingze smiled. "You're very perceptive. That's right. Last night's attack did indeed involve different factions. The big man you killed was named Yang Leihu, a traitor from the Yong Dynasty."

"Didn't the Yong Dynasty perish a long time ago?" Wang Xiuxiu asked with a puzzled expression.

"Yes, the remnants have never given up their evil intentions. When the Yong Dynasty royal family was wiped out, a palace maid took advantage of the chaos to escape with the Yong Dynasty crown prince's posthumous child. After the child grew up, he was enthroned as the Yong crown prince and gathered a group of rebels, causing chaos everywhere."

Wang Xiuxiu nodded thoughtfully, then asked, "What about the other group? Were they sent by the same group as the previous assassinations?"

The other group of people were clearly not as agile as the others.

Lu Jingze's expression was solemn as he said in a low voice, "Yes, I'm returning to the capital this time with evidence that can determine their life or death. Naturally, they will stop at nothing to try and kill me on my way back to the capital."

Wang Xiuxiu nodded slightly, then suddenly remembered something and asked, "By the way, weren't we supposed to split up? How did you know they were lying in ambush on that road?"

---

"Sir, everyone has been dealt with."

But all of this subtly hinted at something being amiss.

"Hmm," Lu Jingze frowned and asked, "Have you seen any thieves carrying crossbows?"

Although Lu Jingze's men were all highly skilled in their respective fields.

But logically speaking, how could villains who brutally murdered so many people be so easily wiped out?

"We've fallen for their trap! Everyone, come with me!"

---

After hearing this, Wang Xiuxiu felt a wave of fear wash over her.

"Luckily you arrived in time, otherwise..."

"Don't be afraid, no matter what, I will protect you."

Wang Xiuxiu felt a warmth in her heart and was about to say something when she saw Lu Jingze's face suddenly turn pale and cold sweat bead on his forehead.

She quickly supported him and asked anxiously, "What's wrong? Is your wound hurting again?"

Lu Jingze forced a smile and said in a low voice, "It's nothing, I'm just a little tired."

Wang Xiuxiu helped him lie down and covered him with a blanket before saying softly, "You should rest well. I'll stay here and watch over you."

"Have them prepare a blanket for you too, so you can lie down even if you're not sleepy. I'll call you if I need anything."

"good."

Lu Jingze nodded when she agreed and slowly closed his eyes.
