"When she left home, she couldn't do anything, but now she's dressed like a proper lady. Maybe she's making a living selling kang beds. It's disgusting."
Wang Yue'e saw that Xia Enruo was dressed decently and didn't seem to be short of money. She had imagined that Xia Enruo, who had been kicked out of her home, should be begging on the streets. She was surprised to find that Xia Enruo was actually quite well-dressed.
Was she just putting on an act when she came to court? She can't do anything, she doesn't have a job, how could she possibly be doing well?
So what if you're good-looking? Can being good-looking put food on the table? At best, you can only be a shady brothel seller.
Xia Enruo glanced at the two of them, her heart unmoved, recalling the original owner's hazy memories.
The original owner's uncle and aunt treated her very poorly, and even when they kicked her out, they showed no mercy, leaving her homeless.
Gu Shaoxuan saw Xia Enruo staring blankly, lost in thought.
He took her hand and placed it in his large hand.
"What's wrong? Lost in thought? Don't be afraid, I'm here for you."
He offered words of comfort.
“I’m not afraid. I just saw Zhang Guohong’s parents sitting in the audience, and it reminded me of some things from the past.”
"Zhang Guohong's parents? Aren't those your uncle and aunt? Where are they?"
Xia Enruo snorted in response.
“Uncle and Aunt? They’ve never treated me like a niece. You can see for yourself. The two most menacing old men in the audience are them.”
Gu Shaoxuan turned his head and looked over. Sure enough, in the middle row, there was an elderly couple who didn't look like good people. They kept staring at Xia Enruo and muttering to themselves.
"I saw them, it's okay. Just ignore them."
After Gu Shaoxuan and Xia Enruo got married, he never heard her talk about her family history.
All he knew was that Xia Enruo's parents had passed away; he had never heard her mention anything else among her relatives.
Now it seems there's really no need to contact them anymore; we're no different from strangers.
Staff from the procuratorate and the court entered the venue one after another.
With everything prepared, Zhang Guohong, Wang Hu, and the others were led into the courtroom by bailiffs.
When Wang Yue'e saw her son come in, she became somewhat agitated and tried to get up, but Zhang Baozhu held her down.
“What are you going to do in the courtroom? If you walk over there, you’ll be chased back and won’t even get a chance to touch Guohong.”
Wang Yue'e wiped away her tears and could only sit quietly.
The trial proceeded steadily and orderly, starting with the prosecutor reading the indictment.
Next came the cross-examination session, where Xia Enruo, as both a witness and a victim, was also asked to speak.
She stood up, showing no sign of nervousness, glanced at Zhang Guohong, and recounted the events of that day to the judge, word by word.
The ideas were clear and the words were very well expressed.
The audience members immediately began to whisper among themselves.
The judge struck the gavel, signaling for silence.
After half a day of trial, Wang Hu and the others all pleaded guilty and accepted punishment, while Zhang Guohong continued to defend himself and deny his guilt.
The court announced that it would deliver its verdict at a later date.
Gu Shaoxuan led Xia Enruo by the hand to the courthouse entrance, where they were stopped by Zhang Baozhu and Wang Yue'e.
Zhang Baozhu pointed at Xia Enruo and said:
“Enruo, I never thought you were so heartless. You even tried to harm your own brother and send him to prison. If your parents were alive and saw you doing this, they would never forgive you.”
Xia Enruo had long anticipated that these two old men would put on such a show. She took Gu Shaoxuan's arm and stared at the two of them as she replied.
"Don't call me Enruo, Enruo so affectionately. Please call me Xia Enruo. Back when you kicked me out of the house..."
You didn't consider that I'm your sister's child, yet today you're criticizing me, showing no regard for sibling affection.
Zhang Guohong broke the law; even if I didn't say anything, the law would still punish him, and he deserved it.
Zhang Baozhu was stunned. He hadn't expected that this young girl, whom he hadn't seen for several years, would be so quick-witted and sharp-tongued, showing no shame or fear whatsoever.
In the past, you wouldn't say a word even if you were beaten, and you would just cry while others pointed at you and scolded you.
Fortunately, his younger sister's family was well-off, providing him with good food and drink, and even sending him to learn music; otherwise, he wouldn't have survived to this age.
"Xia Enruo, you're such an ingrate! My sister and brother-in-law were really blind back then."
We brought you back, and you brought death to your family. You're a cursed star, a jinx.
You'd better stay away from her, or you might suffer an undeserved misfortune yourself.
After Zhang Baozhu finished speaking, he glanced at Gu Shaoxuan one last time, wondering what the relationship was between this man and Xia Enruo.
"I advise you to be more respectful when you speak to my wife, or my fists won't be for nothing."
Gu Shaoxuan frowned, staring sharply at the two of them.
Upon hearing Gu Shaoxuan's words, Zhang Baozhu subconsciously took a step back. It turned out that this guy was Xia Enruo's husband.
Xia Enruo really got incredibly lucky; someone actually wanted her, and her man was handsome and tall. She's truly cursed to bring misfortune to others while reaping the benefits herself.
Upon hearing this, Wang Yue'e brought up her past behavior of causing a scene in the village, and she tilted her head and stretched out her arm.
"Okay, you want to hit someone? Go ahead, hit me, come on, hit me."
She shouted, and the crowd of onlookers grew larger and larger.
Xia Enruo found the couple's shameless behavior truly repulsive.
Gu Shaoxuan clenched his fists; he really wanted to go up and punch the two of them.
"Alright, Wang Yue'e. Stop making a fool of yourself here. Your son, Zhang Guohong, is a medical school student, after all."
They've studied a lot, but it's all gone to waste. Knowing the law and breaking it should be punished even more severely, because that's intentional crime.
