Seeing Jiang Ting's body lying in the coffin in the mourning tent, Jiang Pei was a little scared. She thought Jiang Ting's face was pale and ugly.
The dark circles under his eyes looked like he had applied eyeshadow.
“Pelle, go and see your sister, see her one last time. The funeral is tomorrow.”
Jiang Pei was helped by her mother to lean towards Jiang Ting's face.
The more she looked, the more frightened she became. Just as she was about to approach her mother, Jiang Pei broke free from her mother's hand.
"Ah...ah...Mom, I don't want to! I don't want to see!"
Jiang Pei stumbled back a few steps and fell onto the cold ground, filled with immense fear.
Why was Jiang Ting's face so terrifying? It wasn't white, but bluish-green.
Her lips were purple.
"Pei'er, what's wrong?"
"Mom, I...I can't bear to look at Tingmei's face. I'm afraid I'll be heartbroken. I'm afraid...afraid I won't be able to accept the fact that she's dead. I don't want to look...I don't want to look!"
Jiang Pei grew increasingly frightened, fearing that Jiang Ting would seek revenge and settle scores with her that night.
"There are no ghosts in this world, so where would ghosts come from? Jiang Pei, you are a soldier, and soldiers are not afraid of ghosts. Jiang Ting, you died voluntarily. I didn't force you. I just gave you medicine."
"I never told you to commit suicide. You're just useless and want to die, so you can't blame anyone else."
Jiang Pei comforted herself, not daring to get too close to the coffin.
“Sister-in-law, Pei’er is kind-hearted and can’t bear to see Tingting’s body. Please let her burn some paper money and help her into the house to rest.”
When her aunt came over and heard Jiang Pei's words, she gave her mother some instructions.
“Daughter, let me help you burn paper money. Don’t cry. Your sister Ting is gone and will never come back. We who are alive must keep looking forward.”
Jiang Pei picked up the paper money and placed it in the brazier under the candlestick. Looking at the burning flames, she felt much more at ease.
"Jiang Ting, you're dead and you're still scaring people. You're such a shameless bitch. It's good that you're dead. Now I can finally have some peace and quiet. Otherwise, you'd be constantly nagging me about Yuan Qiang's name."
"It's so annoying to hear. When you get to the underworld, tell Yama, 'Don't be reborn as a human. With a brain like yours, you'd be wasting your life.'"
After burning the paper money, Jiang Pei went inside and drank a cup of hot tea to warm herself up.
"Mom, I'll go back as soon as I'm done. I really wanted to stay here with my aunt and uncle, but the army has a lot of missions. The regimental commander wants us to go to the grassroots level to continue performing, so I have to go back to the regiment."
"But what about your leg? Are you sure you can manage? If you really can't, take a day off."
"Mom, they want me to be the host, I can't refuse."
Jiang Pei was still flustered while she was there, so she made up an excuse and slipped away.
Since she was all alone at home, she didn't dare stay there at night and simply went back to the regiment's dormitory to stay, where at least she had her comrades who hadn't gone home to keep her company.
After Gu Shaoxuan finished his run, he and Yuan Qiang went to the army canteen, got their boxed lunches, and were about to return to the guesthouse when Yuan Qiang, who hadn't even sat down properly, called out:
"You're not going to have breakfast with me!"
“Enruo is still asleep. I got breakfast and went back to eat with your sister-in-law.”
"You comrade who forgets his friends for the sake of beauty."
Gu Shaoxuan ran with the lunchbox in his hand, afraid it would get cold, and opened the door just as Xia Enruo woke up from bed.
"Enruo, you're awake. Hurry up and wash up, let's eat."
Xia Enru stretched. She had slept very soundly yesterday and hadn't even heard the reveille, which was a first for her.
"Honey, are you tired?"
Gu Shaoxuan leaned over and kissed her on the forehead.
"What do you think? My whole body aches now, just like when I ran a kilometer in college."
"Then...I'll be gentler next time. Okay?"
Xia Enruo was speechless. Is this how you comfort someone? He really is a straight man.
"Gu Shaoxuan, you really... don't know how to talk. Never mind, I'm going to wash up!"
While Xia Enruo went to the bathroom to wash up, Gu Shaoxuan opened the window to ventilate the room and then made the bed.
He opened the breakfast and placed it on the table. After preparing everything, he waited for his wife to eat breakfast together.
Just then, there was a knock on the door, and Gu Shaoxuan went over to open it.
A waiter was standing at the door with breakfast in his hand.
"Chief of Staff, this is the breakfast prepared by the guesthouse. I've brought it to you."
"Put it on the table."
Gu Shaoxuan said.
The waiter walked into the room and saw the lunchbox on the table. He was surprised that the chief of staff had gotten up so early to get food from the canteen. He really took good care of his sister-in-law.
"Boss, next time you need to get food from the cafeteria, you can let me know, and we can help you get the food back so you don't have to run back and forth."
"Oh, thank you. But only I know what your sister-in-law likes to eat, so I'll have to make it myself. Thank you for your thoughtfulness, you've worked hard."
The waiter smiled and walked out of the room. He really didn't expect the chief of staff to be so thoughtful, even personally serving the food.
Xia Enru dried her hair and came out.
"Did someone just come here?"
"The guesthouse staff has brought breakfast."
"Honey, I got you some food from the cafeteria. It includes your favorite millet porridge and pork and cabbage buns. Didn't you say you liked them last time?"
Xia Enruo saw the lunchboxes on the table, and they really were her favorite foods. Last time she went to the military base and ate at the same table with the other military wives, she mentioned that she liked these foods.
I never expected him to know!
"How did you know? I don't remember telling you."
"Your husband's investigative skills are unmatched. Last time we ate together, I noticed you ate the most and seemed to enjoy it the most. So I knew you liked it!"
"You actually peeked at me, Gu Shaoxuan, you're a dangerous element."
“You’re my wife, and I think you’re the right one for me. If anyone else tries to peek, I won’t let them.”
Xia En dried her hair and sat down next to Gu Shaoxuan.
"Enruo, how about I feed you? Aren't your arms sore?"
Gu Shaoxuan picked up the millet porridge, blew on it with a spoon, and scooped a spoonful to Xia Enruo's lips.
Xia Enruo took a bite, and sure enough, the millet porridge made with love was sweeter than ever before.
"Did you add sugar?"
"Sugar? The army mess hall doesn't put that stuff in there. Here, have another bite!"
"Alright, I'll take care of it. It feels like I'm paralyzed myself if you take care of me."
"Enruo, I just want to take good care of you. I'm afraid of losing you."
How could you lose me?
"You said you traveled from the future to the present, but I'm afraid that one day you'll travel back in time, and I'm afraid I'll never see you again."
Gu Shaoxuan looked into Xia Enruo's eyes, his tone becoming somewhat deep.
Ever since he learned about Xia Enruo's time travel, he had been filled with mixed feelings, and he kept thinking about it while running.
What if Xia Enruo travels back in time again? Wouldn't I lose her? I don't have the ability to travel through time.
It must have been excruciatingly painful back then.
