"Shao Xuan, happy birthday!"
Xia Enruo pushed the prepared cake in front of Gu Shaoxuan.
Several candles were also stuck on it.
"Honey, this cake is so beautiful. Is that me in the picture on it?"
Gu Shaoxuan stared at the cartoon soldier on the cake. It was the first time he had ever seen such a design. The cakes he had eaten before were all small pink flowers with green leaves.
"It's you. I'm imagining what you'd look like during military training. What do you think of this gun?"
"Exquisite, just like when we used to do field training."
"It tastes great too. Let's light the candles quickly."
Gu Shaoxuan took out matches from his pocket and lit the candles one by one.
"Close your eyes and make a birthday wish."
Gu Shaoxuan did as he was told, while Xia Enruo sang a birthday song to him.
This strong sense of ceremony drew the attention of everyone in the hotel lobby.
Xia Enruo didn't feel embarrassed at all. She wasn't shy at all and insisted on finishing the birthday song, even singing it in English at the end.
"Blow out the candles!"
"oh."
This was the first time Gu Shaoxuan had celebrated a birthday with such a sense of ceremony.
He used to be in the army. On his birthday, he would have a drink with three or five of his comrades. They would get so drunk that they would go back to their dorm and fall asleep immediately.
Xia Enruo picked up a knife and cut off a corner of the cake.
"Here, eat yourself."
"Wife, I ate myself."
Gu Shaoxuan smiled, revealing his white teeth, and took the plate from her hand.
He swallowed the top cartoon character in one gulp.
"Mmm! Delicious! So delicious! It smells so good!"
Gu Shaoxuan muttered.
The cake smelled wonderful as soon as it was taken out of the box, and the aroma of fruit mixed with cream was even stronger after Xia Enruo cut it open.
It lingered around the dining table.
A little boy was drawn over by the aroma and stood at a distance, staring intently at the cake, his fingers dangling from his mouth.
Seeing that the child was adorable, Xia Enruo cut off a piece of her own flesh and stood up to hand it to him.
"Sweetie, would you like some cake?"
The little boy nodded.
"Auntie will give you a piece."
The child was overjoyed and ran back to his parents with the plate in his hand.
"Thank you, comrade. My child is too young to understand."
Xia Enruo: "You're welcome, the child is so cute."
She returned to her seat, and Gu Shaoxuan had already stuffed the entire cake into his mouth, even licking the edge of the plate with his tongue.
"Why are you acting like a child? There are plenty more here."
Gu Shaoxuan put down the plate.
"Honey, this is so delicious! It's the first time I've ever had such a good cake. The bread underneath is so soft it feels like it'll slide right into your mouth."
"What bread? That's cake base. Of course our homemade bread is soft. Some of the ones sold in stores have been sitting for a week, so they definitely won't taste good."
Xia Enruo picked up a handkerchief and wiped the cream off her husband's lips.
"Hurry up and eat your food. After we finish, let's take a stroll around Swan Lake."
After finishing their meal, Gu Shaoxuan went to the front desk to pay the bill, while Xia Enruo put the remaining cake into a box and carried it out.
"That comrade!"
Hearing someone call out, she stopped and turned around.
It turned out to be the mother of the little boy from earlier.
"Comrade, these are fresh strawberries we just picked from the fields in the countryside. Thank you for the cake, it's so delicious."
We've never had such a delicious birthday cake before.
The woman handed over the bag as she spoke.
"Thank you! You're too kind."
Xia Enruo replied.
"Comrade, I'd like to ask, where did you buy this cake?"
"Oh, this. I made it myself. There's nowhere to sell it right now, but it will be available at the newly opened Like Wanjia Supermarket on Yongning Central Street in about two months. You can buy it there then."
Gu Shaoxuan waited for Xia Enruo at the door with his bag on his back.
What did that woman just say?
"Oh. Thank you for the birthday cake, and for the bag of fresh strawberries. You even asked me where I got the cake."
I told her to go to the newly opened supermarket on Central Street in two months.
Gu Shaoxuan took the things from Xia Enruo's hands.
"Honey, what did you say? We're opening a new supermarket again?"
He spent a month in the army and was unaware of the changes in his family business, let alone how much money his company could earn in a day.
Xia Enruo always asked about her husband's well-being on the phone. She knew her husband didn't understand business matters, so she didn't want him to worry about it with her.
It would be better not to tell him at all, so that he can focus on leading troops in the army.
"Yes, I didn't tell you because I was afraid you'd be distracted while you were in the army. I'll take you there to see it later, and then you'll know."
"Enruo, you've worked so hard. I can't be of much help in the army, and you've been taking care of everything at home."
Xia Enruo took Gu Shaoxuan's arm and walked forward.
"Don't say that. The steamed buns you made for me after you left, I ate one every morning, they were so delicious."
Besides, every time the family encounters difficulties, it's you who helps me solve them; without you, my business wouldn't have grown to such a large size.
When they arrived at Swan Lake Park, the vegetation was lush in the height of summer. The last time the two of them came here was in early spring, when the river water had just thawed.
Xia Enruo put her hand in the water again and shook it back and forth.
"Mmm, the lake water is warm, it feels so nice."
Gu Shaoxuan was afraid that his wife would fall into the lake because of her weight, so he sat next to her to protect her.
"Honey, the baby is getting bigger and bigger, and it's becoming less convenient for you to move around. I think we should call Mom over to take care of you at home."
