Chapter 3: The Awkwardness of Being Alone Between a Man and a Woman

Xia Enruo cleaned the house and rubbed her belly, which was rumbling. She had originally planned to go out to buy some groceries to cook, but she figured that if she went out dressed like this, passersby would probably think she had mental problems. She also didn't know her neighbors, so she decided to wait until her clothes were dry before going out.

She bent down and rubbed her wet hair with a dry towel, trying to dry it as quickly as possible. Her clothes twitched, revealing glimpses of her pink underwear.

Gu Shaoxuan opened the door and walked in with a lunchbox, just in time to see this scene. He immediately felt his cheeks burning and his blood rushing to his head. He quickly turned his face away, put the lunchbox on the table, and the scene just now kept replaying in his mind.

"Why are you back? Did you forget something?"

Xia Enruo quickly got up. She hadn't even had a chance to relax and cool off at home for long when he suddenly came back.

"This is my home, why can't I come back?"

Gu Shaoxuan could tell from her tone that she didn't want him to come back at all; it sounded like she was trying to get rid of him.

"I...I didn't mean that, I just found it very surprising. You didn't like staying at home before."

Oh dear, what's wrong with my mouth today? Has it been blessed? Everything I say seems to go wrong.

"I have a meeting tomorrow, so I'll stay home and sleep tonight."

Gu Shaoxuan opened the lunchbox without a second thought, and the aroma of the food immediately filled the air: a plate of braised meatballs, a plate of stir-fried garlic sprouts, and two boxes of rice. Xia Enruo swallowed hard; she was truly hungry.

"Okay, I'll go get the bowls and chopsticks."

Xia Enru thought to herself that Gu Shaoxuan was a real lifesaver. She was worried about her first meal, but he actually brought her food back. He wasn't a bad person after all; it was just that the original owner of this body had been too demanding in the past.

The two ate around the table in silence; the room was so quiet you could hear their teeth chewing.

Xia Enruo took a small bite of the meatball. The meat was of good quality, with more meat than flour, and it was made with high-quality ingredients. However, it was a little salty.

The rice was very soft and sticky, and it was full of rice flavor. These days there are indeed fewer additives, and many things are still quite authentic.

Gu Shaoxuan watched Xia Enruo eat in small bites, without smacking her lips or stirring the food with her chopsticks. She was very civilized. She was acting very strangely today.

There was no sound of conversation, and Xia Enruo felt extremely oppressed. She looked at Gu Shaoxuan's profile; his sharp features made him a typical tough guy. In her previous life, he could have easily played a soldier defending his country on screen.

But he was the original owner's husband, and she has no feelings for him now, only admiration. Anyway, she'll be getting a divorce and moving out soon, and achieving financial freedom is the most important thing for her to live on right now.

After dinner, Xia Enruo cleared away the used dishes and chopsticks and started washing them by the sink. She also wiped the table clean and tidied the floor, so busy that she could hardly stand still.

Gu Shaoxuan sat in the chair watching her every move, feeling increasingly puzzled. In the past, she would push away the dishes and chopsticks after eating, lie down on the bed and sleep, just like a pig, doing nothing but eating and sleeping. Today, she actually started tidying up the house.

Looking at Gu Shaoxuan's thoughtful expression, Xia Enruo could roughly guess what he was thinking.

"What? Feeling something's off? People change. As the saying goes, 'A scholar should be looked at with new eyes after three days' absence.' Wouldn't it be better if I started striving for improvement from now on?"

Gu Shaoxuan felt that her unusual behavior must be suspicious. Was she afraid she wouldn't be able to survive alone, yet didn't want to regret the divorce? Was she putting on an act for him? But thinking about it, it made sense; of course she was afraid since she couldn't do anything.

“That’s good. Don’t worry, I’ll ask someone in the city to find you a job and a dormitory. You won’t go hungry.”

Xia Enruo thought to herself, Gu Shaoxuan really hates the original owner of this body, he wants her to move out so badly. It seems the original owner did indeed commit many evil deeds at home, making him wish he could send her away immediately.

"Okay, I'll go look for a job in town tomorrow too. I'll leave as soon as I find one, I won't stay here and linger."

“You’re going to look for a job? What do you think you can do? You’ve been living here for a while now, and I can’t tell you what you’re capable of.”

You're not naive enough to think that washing a few clothes and tidying up the house will automatically land you a job, are you? These days, education is increasingly valued; every company wants a college graduate. You didn't even finish junior high; you can only get a menial job in a restaurant.

Xia Enruo rolled her eyes inwardly. "I have a Master of Business Administration degree, and you're making me sound like I'm not even as good as a vocational school graduate." But there was nothing she could do; she couldn't reveal her transmigrated identity.

"You mean a restaurant worker? Are state-run restaurants hiring now?"

Xia Enruo became interested when she heard about the restaurant. Wasn't that her old profession from her previous life? If she could really find a job in a restaurant, she might actually be able to make her first pot of gold.

"Don't even think about state-run restaurants; even temporary workers need connections. I'm talking about privately owned small shops, though that might be possible."

Seeing that Gu Shaoxuan looked down on her so much, Xia Enruo stopped talking and decided to go out and find out for herself tomorrow.

Night fell, and this era didn't offer much of a vibrant nightlife. After dinner, Gu Shaoxuan read a book in his room, while Xia Enruo could only sit in her room, lost in thought. The awkward atmosphere made even breathing seem pointless.

Suddenly, the light flickered a few times and then went out. Xia Enruo was startled.

"Oh, what's going on?"

She ran out of her room and bumped into Gu Shaoxuan. A wave of intense heat washed over him, and Gu Shaoxuan's hand accidentally touched the softness of her chest, instantly making his ears burn. They were so close that they could hear each other's heartbeats.

Xia Enruo hurriedly pushed Gu Shaoxuan's arm away and ran to the side, saying:

"Excuse me, what's wrong with this light? Why did it suddenly start flickering and then go dark?"
