Chapter 38 The Sensible Eldest Son

Ge Qiuqin let go of her hand and breathed a sigh of relief.

She was afraid that Zhang Xin would scold her and her child for wasting money if he found out.

"Mom, actually, I deliberately told you yesterday when I came back that my shoes were worn out and couldn't be worn anymore. I noticed that your rain boots had holes, and your feet were always soaked and turned white after rain. Mom, your joints aren't good, and you'll get sick if you keep doing this. I can mend these shoes and still wear them. Dad just gave me some money, so you can use that money to buy a new pair of rain boots."

Zhang Zhicheng was extremely sensible. He struggled to push the cotton thread into his shoe with the awl and said...

Upon hearing her eldest son's words, Ge Qiuqin instantly broke down in tears.

She squatted down and picked up her son's tiny feet. His feet were still so small, and his little toe had developed a thick callus from being rubbed by the cotton thread.

"Mom won't buy it, Mom isn't afraid. In a little while, Mom will take you to the store to buy a new pair of shoes. Wearing new shoes, we'll study hard, and when we grow up and become successful, Mom will be happy."

Ge Qiuqin took the awl and wiped the boss's cheek.

"Mom, I'm really fine. I'm not afraid of what others will say or what the teacher will say about me. I just want you to stay healthy. Mom, are you still in pain?"

Zhang Zhicheng touched the bruises on Ge Qiuqin's arm and asked.

"It's okay, Mom's not in pain. Listen to Mom, go wash your face. Wake up your younger siblings in a bit, and I'll make you breakfast."

Ge Qiuqin put away the awl and cotton thread, and poured some warm water from the thermos. After washing up, she scooped a bowl of millet from the rice jar, preparing to cook rice porridge for the children.

Yuan Qiang arrived at the hospital early in the morning, having promised Xia Enruo that he would help take care of Lao Gu, and he couldn't go back on his word.

Yuan Qiang pushed open the door and entered the ward. Xia Enruo had already finished feeding Gu Shaoxuan breakfast and was wiping his body with a towel.

It has to be said that Xia Enruo is truly patient, taking excellent care of Gu Shaoxuan, even more meticulously than his own mother. She wipes his body twice a day, morning and evening, and even applies some prickly heat powder to his back.

"Sister-in-law, you are the most virtuous wife I have ever met. You are truly remarkable. I was worried about Lao Gu's recovery after his injury, but it seems that he will be fully recovered soon."

Xia Enruo was both amused and exasperated by Yuan Qiang's words. It seemed that the biggest concern about Gu Shaoxuan's injury was not how serious it was, but whether he would be tortured to death by them.

"What, sister-in-law, does what you're saying make it sound like I was the least virtuous wife you've ever met?"

Xia Enruo said jokingly.

"Slip of the tongue, slip of the tongue, sister-in-law. I didn't mean that. I just wanted to say that you're getting better and better. Seeing how well Lao Gu is being taken care of makes me want to get married soon."

Hearing Yuan Qiang say that, this kid is really about to have a stroke of luck.

“Yuan Qiang, there are so many girls in the military arts troupe, don’t get overwhelmed by the choices. Just pick one that’s suitable.”

Gu Shaoxuan glanced at Yuan Qiang and said.

Yuan Qiang chuckled inwardly upon hearing this; it seemed that Old Gu wasn't an unyielding rock after all.

"Yes, the cultural troupe is great. There are so many nightingales like Jiang Pei, singing in your ear every day. Everyone likes such beautiful women. Yuan Qiang, just listen to Gu Shaoxuan and find a suitable one. You'll regret it if you don't listen to your elders."

Xia Enruo teased Yuan Qiang, following Gu Shaoxuan's words. She had heard Qiao Huizhen say that Jiang Pei was Gu Shaoxuan's favorite. If it weren't for the original owner forcing them to get married, the two might have had two children in three years by now.

Gu Shaoxuan glanced at Xia Enruo after hearing her words. What's wrong with her? Why does she keep mentioning "Jiang Pei"?

Xia Enruo noticed Gu Shaoxuan's gaze and deliberately mouthed the two words "Jiang Pei" to him again.

Then she hummed "Night at the Military Port," a song Jiang Pei sang in the military auditorium:

The night at the naval port was quiet.

The waves gently rocked the warship.

The young sailor rested his head on the waves.

A sweet smile appeared on her face in her sleep.

Sea breeze, you blow gently.

The waves gently rock...

Xia Enru thought to herself, "I've been so tired taking care of you these past two days, so I'll hum a few lines of your lover's song to amuse you and cheer myself up."

Yuan Qiang watched the two of them turn to the side and cover their mouths while laughing.

Gu Shaoxuan frowned when he saw Yuan Qiang laughing at him. He glanced at Xia Enruo, who was humming a song and wringing out a towel in a basin, acting as if nothing had happened.

After Xia Enru finished packing, she gave a few instructions, picked up her cloth bag and lunchbox, and left.

Yuan Qiang sat on the edge of Gu Shaoxuan's bed and said:

"Oh my, Jiang Pei's songs are really good, sister-in-law has memorized them all."

Gu Shaoxuan was speechless...

When Xia Enru arrived at the client's house, she ran into Wu Meixia, who was attending a banquet. The two sisters hadn't seen each other for a while and had a lot to talk about.

These past two days, Wu Meixia learned privately from the bureau that her former leader had helped with her promotion, and her promotion to a full-fledged position was a done deal. All that was left was to go through the formalities. She was overjoyed; the 50 yuan she spent on Xia Enruo was well worth it.

"Girl, I haven't seen you for a few days, you look much more haggard, did you not sleep well last night?"

Wu Meixia felt that Xia Enruo had dark circles under her eyes today, and her complexion didn't look too good either.

Xia Enruo was surprised to see how haggard she looked; even Wu Meixia noticed. She hadn't been sleeping well in the hospital these past few nights, and the added stress of working and cooking during the day had taken a toll on her health.

"Sister, my husband was injured while on duty with the police these past two days and he's been hospitalized. I've been taking care of him, and I'm quite tired at night, so he doesn't look well."

"Are you referring to the drug bust mission with the police a couple of days ago?"

Wu Meixia asked.

"Yes, sis, that's the mission where you were injured."

"Oh my god, I just read the newspaper this morning. It said that a soldier was injured while assisting the police in a drug bust. I never imagined it was your husband. Brother-in-law is a true hero!"
