If Xia En knew when to stop, the price was indeed cheap. If the shop owner knew it could be repaired and still be used, he definitely wouldn't have sold it.
“Brother Xing, you’re a straightforward person. Five yuan is five yuan, so two machines will cost ten yuan, right?”
Xia Enruo took out some money and gave it to the shop owner, who was a straightforward person and went to move the washing machine.
"Brother, what are you going to do with all these unused washing machines that you've left here?"
"Hey, we'll just take it apart. The motor inside can be sold for scrap metal, but the rest of the plastic will just be burned."
Burned? Xia Enruo felt a pang of regret upon hearing this. After-sales service and on-site repairs weren't common these days. Most people just threw away perfectly good things they couldn't use anymore, which was a real shame.
The three of them worked together to place the two washing machines that Wu Shaojun had selected on the back seat of the car.
Xia Enruo really has to thank Shaojun for his help today; otherwise, it would have cost a lot of money to hire a cart to bring these two washing machines home.
"Shaojun, can this washing machine really be fixed?"
Xia Enru asked from inside the car.
"Don't worry, Sister Enruo. I just checked and they're all minor problems. Let's go find some parts to repair the washing machine now, and I'll fix it for you when we get home."
Wu Shaojun is very confident in his skills. He personally repairs all the appliances in his home when they break down, which saves Wu Meixia a lot of money.
Xia Enruo was even more excited upon hearing this. She had thought she would have to spend a considerable amount of money to buy a second-hand washing machine today. She had 120 yuan in her pocket before leaving the house, and she was worried that it wouldn't be enough. Now, not only did she not spend a penny, but she also bought two washing machines. It was a great deal. She could use the remaining money to buy several bags of laundry detergent.
"Shaojun, that part won't be too expensive, will it?"
Wu Shaojun could see through Xia Enruo's thoughts; she was worried that the accessories would be too expensive and that she wouldn't have enough money.
"Don't worry, sis. It won't cost you much to get them spinning."
Hearing this, Xia Enruo felt relieved. Wu Shaojun led her around the alley, turning left and right until Xia Enruo was completely disoriented and had no idea which way was which. Halfway there, Wu Shaojun even got off the bus and bought two bottles of wine and a roast chicken.
"Brother, why are we always wandering around in the alleys?"
"Sister Enruo, there's a hidden gem in this alley; we can only buy what we need here."
The car stopped in front of a shoe repair shop. The shop was very small, and Xia Enruo thought that probably only nearby residents would come here. Outsiders would not know about it unless they came into this alley.
Wu Shaojun led Xia Enruo into the house.
An old shoemaker wearing round-framed glasses was repairing shoes in the main room.
"Master, I'm busy."
Wu Shaojun greeted the old man.
"Shaojun's here. You still remember I'm your master? I haven't seen you for half a year, and you didn't even come to talk to me. And who's this? Is she your girlfriend?"
The old man pointed at Xia Enruo and asked.
Xia Enruo immediately felt embarrassed, and her face turned red.
Wu Shaojun quickly explained
“Master, this is my sworn sister Xia Enruo. She’s been married for a long time, and her husband is a military officer. You’re really just playing matchmaker here.”
The old man chuckled upon hearing this.
"You brat, you're all grown up and you still haven't found a wife. You're just making your sister worry. So, tell me, what have you been up to today?"
"Sir, I brought my sister here to find a washing machine motor and a few meters of copper wire. She just bought two broken washing machines, and I think I can fix them for her."
Upon hearing this, the old man pointed to the side room.
"Go look in that room, take whatever you need."
Wu Shaojun led Xia Enruo to a side room. As soon as they opened the door, the smell of engine oil hit them.
"Good heavens. This place is truly a hidden gem, almost like a general store."
The room was filled with all sorts of motors, spinning wheels, tires, and wires, so many that it was impossible to count them all. Xia Enruo had never seen such a complete set of accessories before.
“My master has been repairing home appliances and leather goods for at least 30 years. I learned my skills from him. He often takes in old motors, repairs them, and they are no different from new ones.”
Wu Shaojun searched inside, while Xia Enruo curiously touched this and that.
The two stayed in the side room for quite a while before finally finding what they were looking for.
"Master, how much are these things? I'll pay you back."
Xia Enruo didn't plan to haggle. She would just give the old man whatever price he wanted, since he was her adopted brother's mentor and haggling would be impolite.
"Take it and use it. Why give me money? It's just sitting here anyway. Let Shaojun fix it properly for you. If he doesn't fix it well, I'll break his legs."
Wu Shaojun was speechless. This master didn't even show him any mercy in front of others. When he was a kid, he was often beaten up when he learned to repair electrical appliances from him.
Once, someone brought over a tape recorder, and one of the speakers was broken. I managed to fix it myself until it was completely unusable. The repairman was so angry that he chased me all over the alley with a stove hook and beat me. I still remember it vividly.
"Master, look at what you're saying, breaking my legs at the drop of a hat. Even if I had eight legs, I still wouldn't be enough for you to beat me. This is the wine and roast chicken I bought for you. Remember to eat it tonight."
Wu Shaojun took the wine and roast chicken he had bought from the car and put them into the old man's hands.
Xia Enruo finally understood why Wu Shaojun had bought these things; she truly owed him a huge favor today.
"You've got some conscience, you still remember I like this kind of thing. Alright, hurry up and go back, otherwise it'll be too dark to see anything and we won't be able to fix it."
Wu Shaojun bid farewell to his master and took Xia Enruo's hand as they walked home.
