When Xia Enruo returned home, Yuan Qiang was already inside chatting with Gu Shaoxuan.
Gu Shaoxuan's task, assigned early in the morning, was to look after the clothes in the yard to prevent them from being blown to the ground by the wind.
He was truly dedicated to the tasks his wife assigned him; when Xia Enruo returned home, not a single piece of clothing fell off the clothesline.
"Sister-in-law, you're back."
Yuan Qiang greeted Xia Enruo as she entered the house.
"Brother Yuan Qiang, you're here really early. Were you so excited last night that you couldn't sleep?"
Xia Enruo noticed that Yuan Qiang looked more dashing today; his military uniform was perfectly neat without a single wrinkle, and his leather shoes were polished to a shine.
Yuan Qiang was a little embarrassed and scratched his head.
"Sister-in-law, you're exaggerating. It's just mild insomnia."
Gu Shaoxuan laughed upon hearing this.
"You also have times when you can't sleep."
Xia Enruo went inside and busied herself making lunch. She had taken the meat out of the refrigerator to thaw before leaving in the morning. Today she planned to make beef stew with potatoes, steam some steamed cakes, and mix some bitter chrysanthemum to cool her body.
Looking at the car full of clothes, Yuan Qiang truly admired Xia Enruo.
"Old Gu, your wife is getting more and more capable. Look at that whole car full of clothes, and there are so many more drying in the yard. Most women really can't do this kind of heavy work."
“Who says otherwise? Enruo still wants to sell boxed lunches, and I can’t stop her no matter what I do. On the way there this afternoon, could you please try to persuade her?”
Upon hearing this, Yuan Qiang exclaimed, "If Xia En is going to sell boxed lunches, my goodness! She must have inexhaustible energy! She has to do laundry and make boxed lunches at the same time. Can her body handle it?"
"Old Gu, you don't still want to divorce your wife, do you? She's a truly exceptional wife, one in a million. Don't fail to cherish her."
Yuan Qiang whispered in Gu Shaoxuan's ear.
“It’s not that I want a divorce, it’s that your sister-in-law still remembers that incident. Maybe I hurt her too much before. I’m really a jerk.”
Gu Shaoxuan sighed in self-reproach.
"Old Gu, don't be discouraged! From now on, let your wife see the changes in you. Maybe you really hurt her too much before."
"My sister-in-law is a good person. I could tell from the moment she started taking care of you when you were sick. She's a kind-hearted woman, completely different from the Xia Enruo I knew before."
Gu Shaoxuan nodded after hearing this, determined to change and make up for his past mistakes so that his wife could see the changes in him.
"Dinner is ready."
Xia Enruo came out of the kitchen and said.
Gu Shaoxuan quickly helped tidy up the table.
Yuan Qiang saw this and realized that Old Gu was really proactive, unlike before. He really wanted to keep Xia Enruo. But then again, who wouldn't want to keep such a good wife?
The beef was stewed to perfection, chewy yet tender, and very flavorful. The potatoes were especially soft and fluffy – it was truly delicious.
"Sister-in-law, your cooking skills are getting better and better. Old Gu has gained a lot of weight, all thanks to you."
“Yuan Qiang, come over whenever you have time. I’ll cook you a few more dishes, including many that you haven’t tried before.”
"That's right, Enruo is a good cook, let her show you a few more of her skills."
Yuan Qiang watched the two of them chatting and laughing, suppressing a smile to himself. Wasn't this just how a married couple should act?
"By the way, I heard that Ding Haotian and Qiao Huizhen got divorced."
Xia Enruo's eyes widened as she listened.
Are you serious?
Gu Shaoxuan also didn't believe it; Ding Haotian loved his wife so much, how could he easily let go?
"It's true. The political commissar said that Ding Haotian personally drafted the divorce report."
I heard that Ding Haotian was recuperating at home, but Qiao Huizhen not only refused to cook for him, but also kept running away from home and never came back. He was so hungry that he could only eat dry steamed buns. In the end, Qiao Huizhen simply got drunk and went home to bring her man, which made Old Ding so angry that he beat her up.
His old injury flared up again, and he ended up in the hospital once more. Old Ding's parents came to take care of him; it's really pitiful. He's got such a wife; his comrades used to envy him for marrying a highly educated woman.
Yuan Qiang shook his head, saying it was a pity.
Gu Shaoxuan looked at Xia Enruo, his eyes slightly moist. If he had been with Qiao Huizhen, he probably would have been crippled long ago.
Xia Enruo folded and wrapped Mao Xiangling's clothes, putting them in her pocket. She first asked Yuan Qiang to take her shopping, and then they would go to the medical university in the afternoon.
"Sister-in-law, is it true that Old Gu said you're going to sell boxed lunches?"
"Yes. I've noticed that the boxed lunch business outside the medical university is booming. With my skills, I'm sure I can make money."
Yuan Qiang felt that Xia Enruo really had a business mind; she saw business opportunities everywhere.
“Sister-in-law. Old Gu is worried that your health can’t handle it. He’s sometimes not good with words, and he was quiet in the army. Sometimes he has a lot on his mind, but he rarely says it out loud. But he really cares about you.”
Hearing Yuan Qiang's words, Xia Enruo also thought that Old Gu was that kind of person. Even when they first met, no matter how angry he was, he only said those two words, nothing more. On the contrary, she had said a lot in front of him, and he couldn't say a word in response.
Xia Enru smiled.
“Yuan Qiang, I know what you’re saying, but right now all I want to do is make more money. After all I’ve been through and all the people I’ve met lately, this thought is getting stronger and stronger. Only when my pockets are full will I be able to go anywhere without fear.”
Xia Enruo's ambition is truly remarkable, surpassing even that of men; no wonder she is unwilling to work in a factory and be constrained.
"Sister-in-law, do you really want to divorce Lao Gu in the future? He was really forced into it before. I don't know if you remember, when you first moved in, we went to your house as guests."
After returning home that time, Old Gu became the laughingstock of the army. From the regiment to the battalion headquarters, all his comrades knew he had married a lazy wife, and everyone laughed at him, making him extremely embarrassed.
