"And my sister, sob, madam, I'm scared."
Since her mother died, she has become her father's punching bag.
Her younger sister was often beaten as well, but she would always go to protect her when her sisters were being beaten, and most of the time, the beatings would fall on her.
But when she was being beaten, no one protected her.
She was beaten the most, and she did all the housework, but her father was still not satisfied and even wanted to sell her.
They still sell to those kinds of places.
She was terrified. She knew that women from good families wouldn't go to such places, and she would rather be beaten at home than be sold.
Moreover, her younger sisters are still young. If she is sold, what will happen to them? They will only have one way out: death.
"He won't dare to hit you again."
Han Luoxue had traveled to many places before, but this was the first time she had encountered something like this.
This man is a real scoundrel, especially since he's a yamen runner. Doesn't the county government have any standards for selecting officials?
Han Luoxue was angry, and her gaze toward the man became colder.
Han Yuchen watched as the group of people who had already run far away helped the man up when they reached the courtyard.
The several grown men ran incredibly fast; anyone who didn't know better would have thought something was chasing them.
The man ran away, and the little girl was so frightened that she squatted down and cried loudly.
"Waaah, I'm doomed, he'll kill me when he gets back."
Han Luoxue looked at the pitiful little girl and comforted her:
"It's alright, I'll go to the county government office right away."
“But… Madam, it won’t do you any good even if you go to the county government. He’s my father, and nobody can control him.”
Zhou Jie was also angry; this was the first time she had ever encountered a father like this.
"Little sister, don't worry, we'll go lock him up right away." As she spoke, she gently helped the girl up, tucked her hair behind her ears, and wiped away her tears.
Han Luoxue looked at the little girl's face, her brows furrowed.
As they left, everyone felt heavy-hearted.
"Xue'er, how about we go somewhere else?"
They've only been here a short time and they've already encountered this kind of thing; the local customs here aren't very good.
"This lady."
A woman in her fifties or sixties called out to Han Luoxue.
"Madam, you shouldn't interfere."
She looked helplessly at the courtyard and sighed:
"That man has powerful connections. He's always had a bad temper and loves to beat his wives. He married one before, but she was beaten to death less than a year into the marriage. This is his second wife. I heard she was picked up from somewhere. She was also a tough woman, but unfortunately, she didn't survive either."
"He left behind several daughters. After his wife died, he would drink and beat the children. Those poor children not only went hungry all day, but were also beaten. The eldest one was beaten the worst."
Hearing this, Han Luoxue felt even more distressed.
These girls are not even as good as the original owner of this body.
At the very least, the original owner's parents treated her quite well.
That woman...
Although Han Luoxue had never met her, her eldest daughter's appearance looked somewhat familiar.
"Brother Chen, you noticed too?"
Han Luoxue tugged at Han Yuchen's sleeve. Brother Chen is smarter than her; he must have noticed it too.
"That's possible, but their mother is already dead."
Han Yuchen sighed. That incident happened so long ago that probably not many people in Hutouya Village remember it anymore.
Besides, that woman is dead, and only these children are left. Would Aunt Xu want them?
After all, she had been missing for so many years, even Aunt Xu might not remember her.
With four children and four mouths to feed, she might not accept having four more people eating in the family.
Another issue is that there is currently no evidence to prove that this is the offspring of Aunt Xu's daughter.
“This is my territory. Whether Aunt Xu cares or not, I’m going to take care of this. Brother Chen, we’re not short of food. If all else fails, let them come with me.”
Judging from that man's temper, he really could beat someone to death.
We can't just execute someone because he beats his wife and children.
Firstly, she had no evidence, and secondly, there was no precedent for this!
Unless someone can prove that he actually killed someone.
The group had originally planned to explore a bit more, but now they'd lost that interest.
When they arrived at the county government office, they happened to run into a dozen or so people carrying sticks.
The man leading the group was indeed that man.
Seeing them arrive at the county government office, the man's eyes widened, and he shouted angrily:
"You still dare to come here?"
After saying that, he turned around and shouted loudly to the people behind him:
"Brothers, it's them! They knew we were yamen runners, but they didn't take us seriously and almost beat me to death."
Upon hearing this, the people behind him immediately became furious.
A group of people rushed out angrily, raised their sticks, and started hitting the group.
Seeing these people attack without saying a word, Han Yuchen narrowed his eyes and his gaze turned cold.
He stepped forward and grabbed the stick in the hand of the man at the front.
The constable tried to pull the stick back, but found that Han Yuchen's hand was clenched tightly. He used all his strength, but the stick did not budge.
At that moment, two more sticks came down.
Han Yuchen nimbly turned his body and dodged one of them.
He bent over and kicked out, striking the man in the abdomen at an incredibly tricky angle.
The man cried out in pain and stumbled back several steps, still holding the stick.
At that moment, Han Yuchen tightened his grip on the stick slightly, and with his other hand he reached forward and flicked it gently. The constable suddenly felt a pain in his hand, his grip loosened, and the stick had changed hands.
He staggered and was struck by the third stick, the blow hitting him squarely on the head. His vision blurred, bright red blood streamed down his forehead, and he collapsed unconscious.
With tools in hand, Han Yuchen gave the people rushing towards him a good beating.
Those yamen runners were usually aggressive and domineering towards the common people, but in front of Han Yuchen, they were almost powerless to fight back.
Soon everyone was lying on the ground, crying and wailing, looking utterly miserable.
When Han Yuchen and his group arrived, some people, not wanting to miss out on trouble, followed them. When they saw so many constables coming out with weapons, they didn't dare look, thinking these guys were in for trouble. But who could have imagined that in the blink of an eye, these usually fierce constables were all lying on the ground?
Everyone looked on in disbelief; no, they wouldn't even dare to do such a thing in their wildest dreams.
One of the constables was the least injured. He secretly got up and ran back to report the news.
"Oh no, someone has escaped."
"Hey, keep an eye on things, someone's gone back to report."
"Yes, you'd better hurry up and leave. If the magistrate comes out soon, it'll be troublesome."
Despite the well-meaning reminders from the villagers, Han Yuchen remained standing ramrod straight.
