Chapter 141 Let’s Go Together
At noon, the carriage drove into a tree-lined avenue, and a man was walking slowly in front, leading a horse.
Ji Quan was about to go straight over when Jiang Lan happened to pull aside the carriage curtain and look forward. She saw the man on horseback and thought his back looked very familiar. The man on the horse also happened to look back.
When the two pairs of eyes met, Jiang Lan was stunned for a moment.
"Cousin Yun?" When Xie Yun led the horse in front of Jiang Lan, she was still a little unsure.
Xie Yun grinned at her and said, "I had a fortune-teller last night, and it told me to go north. Is Sister Lan going north too?"
Ji Quan sneered, "Master Xie is really good at fortune-telling."
Xie Yun looked at Ji Quan and said, "I see your forehead is dark. How about I tell you your fortune?"
"Cousin Yun," Jiang Lan wanted to persuade him to go home first. Just as she called out, Xie Yun smiled and said to her, "Sister Lan, let's go together. We can take care of each other on the way."
"I think since we have different paths, we should each go our separate ways," Ji Quan said.
Xie Yun leaned over and whispered to Jiang Lan, "Sister Lan, I know you're going to visit your brother-in-law. I can help you. I can tell fortunes and I can cook."
After hearing the last sentence, Jiang Lan was a little shaken, but for Xie Yun's safety, she still persuaded him to go home. After all, the road ahead was dangerous and unpredictable.
However, Xie Yun had made all the arrangements. He asked Hequan to take a letter home, saying that he would be traveling for a while, which could be as short as a month or as long as a year and a half.
"Sister Lan, don't worry, I will help you find your brother-in-law." Xie Yun assured confidently.
"Cousin Yun, I'm going to Beimo." Jiang Lan told him her destination, hoping that he would consider it carefully and not take risks with his own safety.
Xie Yun replied without hesitation, "Then I'll go with you." He counted on his fingers again and said with a smile, "Sister Lan is blessed with good fortune. This trip will surely be a success."
"Then let's go quickly. We must get into the city before dark, otherwise the city gate will be closed." Jiang Lan no longer hesitated. To be honest, she was happy that Xie Yun could accompany her. Compared with Ji Quan, she trusted her brother Xie Yun more. With him around, she felt more at ease.
Ji Quan glanced at Jiang Lan and said sarcastically, "Now there's another spoiled young man here, who's really causing me trouble."
Jiang Lan didn't argue with him, just let him complain.
"I see signs of thunderstorm ahead. We have to leave quickly." Xie Yun raised his hand to cover his forehead and looked at the sky in the distance.
Ji Quan sneered and ignored his words.
Just in case, Jiang Lan asked him to put his luggage in the carriage first.
As soon as Xie Yun put the baggage into the carriage, Ji Quan whipped the horse whip and drove the carriage away. Xie Yun followed on horseback. Ji Quan drove the carriage so fast that Xie Yun was left behind.
Until the carriage suddenly bumped and Jiang Lan hit her head on the window. Ji Quan heard a thud and asked, "Are you okay?" Jiang Lan replied, "I'm fine." Ji Quan slowed down the carriage and Xie Yun also caught up on horseback.
After walking on the road for an hour, a large dark cloud floated in from the southwest, the sky suddenly became gloomy, and then a strong wind blew, blowing the leaves all over the sky.
"It's going to rain."
As soon as Xie Yun finished speaking, big raindrops fell down with a crackling sound. Ji Quan drove the carriage to a tree by the roadside and got in to avoid the rain. Jiang Lan asked Xie Yun to come in quickly to avoid the rain. Xie Yun first tied the horse to a tree by the roadside. When he got in the carriage, most of his clothes were soaked by the rain and his hair was dripping. He wiped the rain off his face with his sleeve. Jiang Lan asked him to take off his wet coat and change into dry clothes to avoid catching a cold.
Fortunately, Jiang Lan had asked him to put the bag in the carriage first, otherwise the clothes and dry food inside would have gotten wet.
The rain quickly became heavier, like a downpour, completely obscuring the view ahead and making it impossible to move forward for a while.
The three of them took advantage of this break to eat some dry food and waited until the rain subsided before continuing their journey.
The rain poured down for about a quarter of an hour, then gradually subsided and the three of them set out again.
The rain stopped on the road for about half an hour, and then started again. It was a drizzle at first, and then the rain gradually became heavier and turned into raindrops as big as beans. After a few minutes, it turned into a drizzle again, and it continued to fall intermittently.
When they arrived at the city gate, there were still fine raindrops in the sky, the sky was still terrifyingly gloomy, and the city gate was closed earlier than usual. The three of them entered the city just before the gate closed and stayed at the first inn they saw when they entered the city.
The shopkeeper saw three young men staying at the hotel. One of them had delicate skin and tender flesh, and the one next to him was as extraordinary as a beautiful jade. Both of them were well dressed and they were obviously from wealthy families. The other one had dark skin, tall and thin figure, and his eyes were as sharp as knives. He was obviously a bodyguard or something like that.
Jiang Lan is a woman disguised as a man. After all, it is safer to present herself as a man when going out.
The shopkeeper asked Xie Yun attentively how many rooms he wanted, thinking that Xie Yun was the leader of the three.
Xie Yun asked for three upper rooms. The shopkeeper attentively led the three of them upstairs. After going downstairs, he went to the kitchen and asked the chef to quickly light the fire and cook a few of his signature dishes so as not to neglect the distinguished guests.
During the meal, Ji Quan asked the shopkeeper for a pot of wine, and he wanted the most expensive and best one. The shopkeeper looked at Xie Yun, and the next moment a silver ingot was thrown to him. The shopkeeper had no time to catch it, and the silver fell to the ground with a thud. The shopkeeper hurriedly bent down to pick it up. Ji Quan looked at him coldly, with a sneer of contempt on his lips.
After the shopkeeper left with the silver, Xie Yun tried to persuade Ji Quan, saying, "You are too violent. This is not good."
Ji Quan raised his eyebrows, his eyes curled into a smile, and he bared his white teeth in a provocative smile like a vicious dog.
Xie Yun said with relief, "That's right, just smile more."
Jiang Lan tilted her head and pursed her lips.
Ji Quan's eyes turned cold, and he suddenly grabbed Xie Yun by the collar, which scared the shopkeeper who came to deliver wine. After being glanced at by his knife-like eyes, the shopkeeper quickly put down the wine and left.
"What are you doing? Let go of your hands. Can't we just talk it out nicely?" Jiang Lan tried to pry Ji Quan's hands apart, but Ji Quan shook his hands away and Xie Yun staggered. Jiang Lan quickly supported him and asked if he was okay. Xie Yun waved his hands and said he was fine.
"Stay away from me from now on. I hate you hypocritical nerds the most."
Ji Quan left coldly.
"Your wine?" Xie Yun reminded him from behind. Ji Quan stopped for a moment, his eyes slightly tilted, his peripheral vision sharp as a knife. Jiang Lan stretched out her hands to protect Xie Yun, fearing that he would suddenly turn back and attack him again. Fortunately, he stopped for a moment and then left. Jiang Lan reminded Xie Yun again that Ji Quan had a bad temper and he should talk less to him in the future. Xie Yun felt that since they were companions traveling together, they should get to know each other better. Maybe they could still have a drink together in the future.
Jiang Lan felt that Xie Yun's optimistic idea was unlikely to come true.
At night, Jiang Lan stood in front of the window, looking at the vast night ahead, holding a piece of clothing tightly in her hand.
When she woke up in the underground palace, she was still holding the piece of clothing tightly in her hand.
It was Canglang who cut it off with his sword, because after she fainted, she still held on to Qi Wuhan's clothes tightly and refused to let anyone take him away.
"Where are you now? They didn't do anything to you, did they?" She muttered softly. Whenever she thought about those people torturing him, her heart would ache as if being bitten by tens of thousands of ants. She wished she could be like a god and appear beside him right now...
The next morning, as soon as the city gate opened, the three of them left the city. They rested for a while at noon to let the horses eat grass and drink water to replenish their energy, and then continued on their journey.
When it got dark, they still hadn't found a place to stay, and the horses were tired and couldn't run fast.
Suddenly, a flickering light appeared in the night ahead, flickering up and down in the shadows of the trees like a will-o'-the-wisp.
Xie Yun swallowed nervously and stared at the bright light curiously, feeling both novel and terrified.
Jiang Lan stuck her head out of the carriage and carefully observed the bright light for a while. She vaguely saw the outline of a figure and guessed that it must be someone traveling at night.
After the ball of light emerged from the shadow of the trees, a figure wearing white clothes was vaguely visible from behind, walking towards the carriage.
Xie Yun first stared at the ground, and when he saw the other party had a shadow on the ground, he was no longer nervous, but just curious.
When the other person came over, he raised the lantern in his hand and shone it in front of the carriage, as if to ask for directions. When the lantern's light illuminated Jiang Lan's face, she called out, "Brother Ye?"
Although Ye Rushui's hair was dyed black, the half golden mask on her face was still easy to recognize.
"Another acquaintance of yours?" Ji Quan sneered.
Ye Rushui nodded slightly to Jiang Lan, and Xie Yun also came to say hello to him. Jiang Lan introduced the two to each other, and asked him where he was going. If it was on the way, she could give him a ride. Ye Rushui said he was going to the town ahead, which was on the way, so Jiang Lan asked him to get in the carriage and go together.
Ji Quan asked Xie Yun to drive the carriage, but he rode away on horseback, as if he didn't want to be a free driver anymore.
After the carriage was back on the road, Jiang Lan asked, "Brother Ye, when did you leave the capital?" Ye Rushui replied, "Five days ago, I left when I heard that His Majesty had ordered the arrest of the Marquis."
Jiang Lan did not hide it from him and said that she was going to Beimo to find Qi Wuhan. Ye Rushui was not surprised when he heard it.
"Brother Ye," she paused, "Have you ever heard the Marquis mention his mother?"
Ye Rushui shook her head and said, "He never told me about his family, and I never told him about mine."
Jiang Lan also understood that the friendship between gentlemen is as pure as water. They don't ask about the past and there is no need to dig into the details.
"Brother Ye, where did you get this lantern?" Xie Yun asked curiously.
Ye Rushui replied, "I passed by a village in the evening and a kind old woman lent it to me."
Xie Yun thought of some strange stories he had read in books before, and felt that the identity of this kind old woman was strange. He did not continue the topic for fear of frightening Jiang Lan, and changed the subject to ask, "Brother Ye, are you going to the city ahead to practice medicine?"
Ye Rushui nodded.
"Actually, I also wanted to be a doctor when I was a child, but unfortunately I didn't have much talent. Once, when I was treating a servant at home, I pulled out my father's most precious golden thread lotus. He drank my medicine and cried and laughed. My mother had to ask a doctor to cure him. My father hung me up and beat me, saying that if I treated people carelessly again, he would break my legs. So I didn't learn." Xie Yun laughed as he finished telling this embarrassing childhood story.
Ye Rushui said: "Learning medicine requires more practice."
Xie Yun said in agreement: "What is learned from books is always shallow."
"Nerd." Ji Quan pinched the horse's belly and ran to the front.
In the second half of the night, the group rested in a thatched hut on the side of the road.
Ji Quan built a fire and asked Xie Yun to catch a pheasant or wild rabbit and roast them. Jiang Lan said that dry food would be enough and gave half of the bread to Ye Rushui. Xie Yun said that he would catch a few fish and roast them when they got to the river.
Ye Rushui took out two potatoes from his bag and roasted them on the fire. Xie Yun asked him curiously where the potatoes came from. He replied that a kind old lady gave them to him.
After the potatoes are baked, give one to Jiang Lan with water.
"Where are you from, Master Ye?" Ji Quan stared at the half golden mask on Ye Rushui's face. "I don't think you are from the Central Plains."
Ye Rushui replied, "My home is everywhere. Wherever I go, I belong to that place."
"Where are your parents from?" Ji Quan asked.
This time Ye Rushui did not answer.
"I think the stars in the sky are quite bright tonight. It will definitely be a good day tomorrow." Xie Yun changed the subject.
Jiang Lan looked up at the night sky outside the straw hut. The stars were embedded in the pitch-black night, shining brightly like gems. It was the first time she had seen the starry sky in the wild. It was so clear and dazzling, and it touched people's hearts.
She also wanted to see such a beautiful starry sky with him again in the future...
