Chapter 24 Golden Token
On the day when the boat docked at the ferry, there were misty raindrops floating in the sky. From afar, the water surface was vast and misty, with a hazy beauty of mist and rain.
Qi Wuhan held up an umbrella over Jiang Lan's head and helped her get off the boat.
"Have I offended your little maid? She has acted as if she didn't see me these past two days."
Ever since being misunderstood by Qing'er, Gui'er would turn around and leave every time she saw him, as if she had seen the god of plague.
"I'm afraid you'll take notice of me and take me back to your house and lock me up." Jiang Lan replied.
Qi Wuhan just laughed it off.
After getting off the boat, Qi Wuhan told Jiang Lan that he had something else to do and could only send her here.
"You can't enter or leave Sangcheng at will now. Take this with you," Qi Wuhan took out a golden token from his arms and handed it to Jiang Lan. "If there are soldiers at the city gate who try to stop you, just take this out and no one will stop you."
"Thank you." Jiang Lan took the token. Now was not the time to be pretentious. They had finally come here. If they were stopped outside the city, all their efforts would be wasted. As she lowered the curtain, she whispered, "Be careful."
Qi Wuhan watched the carriage go away until it disappeared.
The little girl really has him in her heart~
"My Lord." Ling Feng came from behind the tree, presented the bone fan with both hands, and said, "The boat is ready."
"Have you explored the way into the city?" Qi Wuhan asked, taking the fan.
Ling Feng replied: "The Black Armor Guards have already investigated, and Miss Jiang Er will not encounter any problems on the way."
"Let's go." Qi Wuhan turned around and said.
Jiang Lan pulled back the curtain and glanced. The ferry was no longer in sight. After lowering the curtain, she looked at the token in her hand. Her slender fingertips gently stroked the carved pattern on it. There were four words engraved on the token:
Imperial token.
There isn't even an official title, it can't be fake...
She thought again, they probably wouldn't want to use gold to make a fake token.
"Miss, what's wrong?"
Gui'er and Qing'er saw that she kept looking at the token and thought there was something wrong with it.
"It's okay." Jiang Lan put the token into her sleeve, then pulled open the car curtain and looked ahead. The lush shade of the trees shaded the road ahead, and the city wall of Sangcheng was still invisible.
After traveling for about an hour, the carriage arrived at its destination in the evening.
Just as the two soldiers were about to close the city gate, the steward hurriedly called out to them, but before they could get close, they were stopped by a third person.
"Back off!" The other person looked to be in his early twenties, at the peak of his youthful vigor. His temper was like a firecracker, which could explode at any moment. Especially his eyes, which were like a vicious dog baring its sharp white fangs, and were extremely aggressive.
It was the first time that the butler had seen someone with such a ferocious look in his eyes, just like a man-eating dog. He didn't dare to go any closer for fear of being bitten.
The curtain of the carriage moved slightly, and the pair of vicious dog-like eyes immediately swept over.
As soon as Jiang Lan moved the curtain, she felt a chill, as if she was being stared at. She withdrew her hand. If the butler couldn't handle it, she would show her token.
"We can't enter the city today. Ask your master to come early tomorrow." Another man came over. He looked to be about forty years old, with a beard, and spoke reasonably, but still did not make an exception for the group.
"Close the city gate!" the middle-aged man ordered.
"Wait a minute!" Jiang Lan stretched out a hand from the carriage and showed the token.
Seeing the golden token with the four big characters "Imperial Token" written on it, the middle-aged man was shocked and immediately apologized, "I apologize for offending you just now." After that, he pulled the young man with the fierce look aside and let the group enter the city.
After the carriage drove away, the young man asked, "Boss, what does that sign say?"
"I want you to learn more words every day, otherwise you might end up dead without knowing how you got hurt if you offend some important person someday." The young man looked unconcerned. The middle-aged man sighed and talked about the sign again, "That golden signet was given by the emperor. Seeing the signet is like seeing the emperor. Small minions like us can't afford to offend him."
The young man muttered, "Maybe it was stolen."
As soon as he finished speaking, the middle-aged man slapped him on the back of his head, "Stop talking nonsense and close the city gate quickly. Your sister-in-law is waiting for me to come home for dinner."
"Close the city gate quickly!" Glancing at the fierce eyes like vicious dogs, the two soldiers immediately closed the city gate.
When the city gate closed, the carriage Jiang Lan was riding in had already turned to another street.
There were few pedestrians on the street, and most of the shops on both sides were closed, and those that were still open were preparing to close.
"Miss, why is this city so deserted?" Guier asked curiously.
Qing'er said, "Do you think everywhere is as lively as our capital? The city gates close early, and people here must go to bed early too. Who would still be strolling around the streets?"
Jiang Lan thought that it was probably due to the impact of the epidemic, and every household was afraid to go out.
The housekeeper originally planned to find an inn to stay in, but Jiang Lan said that they wanted to go to the academy first and didn't want to delay for a moment.
The sun had already set, but it was still an hour or so before dark.
When we arrived outside the academy gate, the sunset was still bright.
The gate of the academy was closed. The housekeeper went over and knocked on the door. After waiting for a while, a little boy in white clothes, about thirteen or fourteen years old, opened the door and asked who he was looking for.
After the butler revealed his identity and explained his purpose, he handed over a visiting card. The little boy in white asked him to wait and closed the door.
After waiting for about a quarter of an hour, the boy in white came back and opened the door, making a gesture for Jiang Lan to go in. The housekeeper stepped aside to let Jiang Lan go first, but the boy in white raised his hand to stop her, saying, "You can't go in."
"Why can't my young lady go in?" Gui'er was a little annoyed and felt that the other party was too rude.
The boy in white replied sternly, "This is the academy's rule. Women are not allowed to enter."
Gui'er was so angry that she wanted to argue again, but Jiang Lan stopped her and asked the housekeeper to take Doctor Liu to see her elder brother first. The little boy in white said that only one person could be brought in.
Jiang Lan thought about it and asked Doctor Liu to follow her in, thinking that he was a doctor after all and knew more than laymen like her and the housekeeper. She asked if there was any doctor inside to treat the disease. The little boy in white replied that they had invited Mr. Bai, a famous doctor from Jiangnan. Jiang Lan told Doctor Liu to make sure to ask Mr. Bai clearly about her elder brother's condition.
After Doctor Liu followed the little boy in white in, Jiang Lan and the others waited outside for about half an hour. It was getting dark. The little boy in white sent Doctor Liu out and closed the door. Jiang Lan hurriedly asked about her elder brother's condition. Doctor Liu assured her that the situation was not serious and gave her his diagnosis.
Jiang Lan asked what Mr. Bai said. Doctor Liu was immediately unhappy, thinking that his medical skills were underestimated. He made up a few improvised words to deal with it. Jiang Lan's expression changed and his face suddenly turned cold, which scared Doctor Liu.
"Didn't you ask Mr. Bai?"
The low pressure from Jiang Lan made Doctor Liu feel as if his life was over. He guiltily explained that he had not seen Mr. Bai. This was also the truth. He did not see anyone, but he did not ask where the person was. He felt that his medical skills were not inferior to that old man, and there was no need to ask him for advice.
Jiang Lan was too lazy to argue with him anymore. She should have let the housekeeper in.
The housekeeper went to knock on the door again. Seeing that the group had not left yet, the little boy in white reminded them that curfew was about to begin and asked them to leave quickly, saying that the academy would not keep any guests. After saying that, he closed the door.
Jiang Lan confirmed her elder brother's condition with Doctor Liu again. Doctor Liu swore that his life was not in danger at the moment. Only then did Jiang Lan get on the carriage and leave.
