Hearing his words, Yoshida Yuta tilted his head, thinking as he slowly spoke:
"After hiding Ahui... the teacher said that he would find someone to play games with us in a couple of days!"
The ghost seemed quite happy as he spoke, his tone unconsciously becoming more animated.
"—Let's play tag!"
Here comes the important part.
The group slowed their breathing and listened intently.
"Here are the rules of this game." He glanced at Kii Kanade discreetly. "Those people will play the ghosts, and Aki and I will play the humans. We have to hide and not get caught by the ghosts. If we are discovered, we will become the new ghosts!"
He started gesturing wildly.
"I used to play games with only one person at most. That day was the first time I saw so many people!"
He dragged out the sound, then blinked as if he had just realized something.
"No, there should be so many ghosts?"
"What kind of people were they?" Masashi Yukimura suddenly asked.
“They are all adults, dressed in the same clothes... but there are also different people, walking around here with strange instruments.”
"Once, they almost found Ahui!"
"I was extremely anxious, but thankfully I managed to change the spatial order in time and teleport Ah Hui away, preventing him from being caught!"
He patted his chest, looking somewhat shaken, yet also revealing a hint of smugness, as if seeking praise.
"..."
However, no one responded to his words; everyone remained silent.
After a long silence, Masashi Yukimura finally spoke softly:
"That group of people must be the police and the Yumi-shi who detects supernatural beings."
Kii Kanade nodded silently.
The pure white paper was stained with ink, which gradually spread. Yoshida Yuta, completely unaware, became a tool of someone with malicious intent, and he remains oblivious to everything until now.
Even they had never seen a supernatural being so thoroughly exploited before.
They remained silent, but Yuta Yoshida was not annoyed and continued his story.
"I didn't understand what a good friend was before, but now I think it's the best thing!"
"The teacher told me not to talk to Ahui, saying that he still needed time to get used to being good friends with us. But I couldn't resist and secretly ran into Ahui's room."
“But Ahui always lies on the ground to sleep... When he sees me, he only tells me that he wants to go home and doesn’t want to play with me anymore.”
"But weren't we having a lot of fun playing the game?"
"I don't want him to leave anymore."
Yuta Yoshida's voice lowered.
"After that, I stopped talking to him."
"The teacher didn't show up during this time. She only came back after the group of adults who played tag with us left."
"But this time he seemed to be in a hurry. He went straight to Ah Hui as soon as he arrived, and he was carrying..."
He looked around and suddenly pointed to the knife on the ground.
"Take this."
"Actually, the teacher wanted me to do it; he wanted me to..."
"—'Kill' Ahui."
“He said that if he did that, Ah Hui would become a ghost like me, and would stay with me forever, and would never say anything about going home again.”
"I think this is a good idea."
In the vast ruins, a clear child's voice spoke words that sent chills down one's spine.
"But I don't understand what 'killing' means, and what 'death' means?"
"The teacher was very angry, but there was nothing he could do, so he decided to do it himself."
"But Ahui kept crying... The teacher's hands were trembling. After a long time, he did nothing and left in a hurry."
"But the next day... that is, yesterday, the teacher came back again. This time he didn't listen to Ahui anymore, but instead used this thing called a 'knife' to stab Ahui's body."
“I wanted to ask the teacher if this was also a kind of game, but after he finished doing all that, he stumbled away and didn’t listen to me at all.” Yoshida Yuta pouted. “Then, I felt a special power enveloping this place.”
"This power seems to be restricting my departure... but I didn't want to go out in the first place, so I didn't pay any attention to it."
"And then, it'll be tonight!"
"The teacher brought you all here!"
Yuta Yoshida's eyes were bright.
"You all came looking for me, you must be here to play tag with me too!"
"..."
That's a misunderstanding.
"but……"
He glanced at Kii Kanade and said dejectedly:
“I don’t know what this brother did, but this place became out of my control, and you found me in no time.”
"Then you caught Ahui!"
"So now, shouldn't we follow the rules and have me play the ghost and catch you?"
He still longed for his game.
"I don't know why, but both the teacher and Ahui were sleeping."
He floated to Hasegawa Teru's side, his outstretched hand passing through the boy's body, bringing a cool, tingling sensation.
The latter unconsciously groaned, his originally relaxed brows furrowed tightly, his eyelashes trembled, and his fingers under his haori twitched.
Then, he opened his eyes.
His hazy eyes looked around, passing through Yoshida Yuta's transparent body, and the first thing he saw was Matsuo lying on the ground, his life hanging in the balance.
His body tensed up instinctively, which pulled at his wound, causing Hasegawa Teru to curl up in pain.
However, the next second, he felt a pair of broad hands gently patting his back, which slowly calmed his frightened emotions.
