Chapter 52 Buried in the Mouth of Wolves

The group split up to search: Liu Shengli went in one direction, Wu Chengye in another, and the Wu Meixiang and Wu Meilan sisters in the third.

Seeing them separate from the shadows, Meng Fuyan knew her chance had come, and she immediately headed towards Wu Chengye.

After Wu Chengye had run a distance, she ran ahead of him and her figure was faintly visible before she disappeared again. Wu Chengye excitedly chased after her. Just as he was about to call out, he saw Meng Fuyan's figure again. Afraid that calling out would scare Meng Fuyan away, he didn't call out and just followed along.

Meng Fuyan led him a distance away, and before he knew it, he had distanced himself from the others, hiding in the shadows and waiting for Wu Chengye to come over.

Wu Chengye did follow, but not seeing Meng Fuyan, he assumed she was ahead and continued to chase after her. Meng Fuyan smiled and watched his back from the shadows. She took out a large toy water gun from her spatial storage, the kind with a longer range.

The water gun contained pre-prepared spiritual spring water. Meng Fuyan chased after him and shot it directly into Wu Chengye's neck. Then she immediately entered her spatial dimension, releasing two hungry wolves along with her.

In the darkness, Wu Chengye felt a chill on his neck. Startled, he turned around and saw two pairs of green eyes staring at him from the darkness.

Wu Chengye was stunned for a moment, but before he could react, the two hungry wolves pounced on him at the same time.

This is the wolf that Meng Fuyan captured with an anesthetic. It has been kept in the space for some time and starved for several days in advance. Now, it is desperately in need of food.

Meng Fuyan had fed this wolf with spiritual spring water many times. In the past, when it was extremely hungry, she would feed it a little spiritual spring water, which made the wolf yearn for the spiritual spring water.

Hungry and smelling the familiar aroma, with food right in front of them, the wolf, disregarding the sudden change in environment, instinctively pounced on its prey.

Before Wu Chengye could even scream, his neck was bitten off.

While the wolves were eating, Meng Fuyan immediately ran back after leaving the space.

Wolves have very keen hearing and sense of smell, and they certainly spotted Meng Fuyan, but with food in their mouths and starving, they didn't care about anything else.

Meng Fuyan ran back to the crowd as fast as she could, already holding a pheasant in her hand. She then took out another live pheasant from her spatial storage, and the pheasant immediately took flight as soon as it was freed.

Meng Fuyan used a slingshot to shoot it down.

The flapping of the pheasant attracted onlookers from a short distance away.

"Oh, a pheasant!"

Soon, the pheasant landed, and then Meng Fuyan's laughter was heard. Her slender figure ran out of the woods and picked up the pheasant.

The brigade leader's wife saw the two pheasants in Meng Fuyan's hands and was extremely envious. "Young Meng, you're really amazing!"

Several older children also gathered around, and they were full of admiration when they saw the slingshot in Meng Fuyan's hand. Boys simply have no resistance to this thing, especially since Meng Fuyan could even use a slingshot to shoot pheasants.

"Sister Meng, you're amazing with your slingshot!"

The people in front of me were all people I had seen not long ago, especially the brigade leader's wife. The last time she disappeared, it was only about half an hour.

However, ordinary people don't have such a strong sense of time, and in their minds, she had only been gone for a short while.

The place where Wu Chengye died is actually quite far from here, and it's deep in the forest. It's almost impossible for a little girl to run there and back and still catch two pheasants, especially since the forest isn't as easy to walk on as a bare, flat path.

Meng Fuyan has always been well-fed and watered, and has received professional training. Since her rebirth, she has been secretly training herself. With the nourishment of the spiritual spring water, her physical strength and speed are far beyond those of ordinary people.

Meng Fuyan smiled and said, "We're lucky today. There are a lot of people in the mountains, and these pheasants are so scared that they don't know where to run. It's easier to fight them than usual."

She said it was easy, but everyone who heard it knew that it wouldn't be easy for the average person to get it.

Meng Fuyan used to bring back some small game when she went up the mountain. The villagers knew that her elders had served in the army and had some knowledge of the game, so they accepted and got used to it.

"Have the hunters not returned yet?" Meng Fuyan asked.

The captain's wife laughed and said, "It's not that fast. Sometimes we have to wait until the middle of the night to ambush the prey! It's only just gotten dark, there's still a long wait ahead."

"It's too dark in the woods now, you're just a young girl, don't go in, just wait outside!"

Meng Fuyan nodded and obediently stayed on the outside with these people.

Winter hunting is a major event for the Banqiao Brigade every year, on par with the distribution of pork and grain at the end of the year, so a large number of people participate, and many gather together to wait.

The forest is rich in resources, and the large groups that hunt together almost every year manage to catch something big; they're all just there for the fun of it.

In those days, there was little entertainment. Winter hunting was their last major event before hibernating at the end of the year. Apart from some elderly people, many were very energetic and would wait until late at night to see the big animals they hunted.

Meng Fuyan waited with the others.

With nothing much to do and it getting dark, the kids started making food.

Some picked wild vegetables and mushrooms, some were lucky enough to find wild eggs, and some even managed to shoot birds. Some children even brought bowls and chopsticks, and Meng Fuyan saw an older child carrying a clay pot on his back.

Throughout the year, meat resources are only relatively abundant during the pork season and winter hunting season. These little guys really go all out for a bite to eat.

Meng Fuyan watched, feeling both amused and heartbroken.

Oh, the times!

Think about people decades from now. Although life will be stressful, at least they will be able to afford to eat meat if they want to. Unlike now, where people can't even eat meat a few times a year.

Compared to that, I'm so happy!

Meng Fuyan gave up both pheasants and even traded one with a man in the village who had also caught one. The man wanted meat but wanted grain even more, so Meng Fuyan agreed to trade him grain, which he immediately accepted.

Meng Fuyan tossed the pheasants to a group of children, saying, "Go, clean them up. Stew these two together. It's so cold tonight, everyone should have some broth."

With a dozen or twenty children, two pheasants were clearly not enough, and three would be about right. She was afraid that any more would make them too greedy.

The children were stunned. "This...is this for us to eat?"

Meng Fuyan nodded, "Yeah, I've been walking around and I'm exhausted. I don't want to move. You guys take care of all three. Two for soup, and I'll grill the other one. We'll share them later."

The children cheered immediately, "Oh oh oh oh..."

"We'll go right now."

"Make sure it's clean!"
