Chapter 43 Two Wolves, a Large Number of Mushrooms

I took out my binoculars and looked around; the meadow was bustling with activity.

Pheasants flew around, rabbits foraged for food, roe deer, musk deer, and even some wild sheep were spotted by Meng Fuyan, and then... wolves!

Looking at the two robust wolves, Meng Fuyan curled the corners of her lips, quite satisfied.

She slowly approached the area, took out a tranquilizer gun, knocked down the wolf, and then stored it in her spatial storage. As for the rest, she would use a bow and arrows to deal with them. She couldn't bear to use something as precious as tranquilizer on something so insignificant.

Finally, they caught two wild sheep, three roe deer, one roe deer, six wild rabbits, and four pheasants.

There were three wild boars in the trap she had dug earlier; they were already dead, but judging from their appearance, they hadn't been dead for long.

Meng Fuyan was very satisfied with the two large ones and one small one, and put them all into her spatial storage.

As for the other prey, they were all taken to the water's edge to be slaughtered and cleaned. By the time everything was processed, it was already afternoon.

After putting everything into her spatial storage, Meng Fuyan took out some food to fill her stomach and rested for a while before continuing her work.

Mushrooms and wild vegetables grow everywhere. The dead wood is covered with dense clusters of wood ear fungus, and the fungi are large and grow in clumps. There are also many wild vegetables in the grass.

Meng Fuyan picked three whole sacks of mushrooms, putting most of them into her spatial storage and leaving a small portion outside. She also picked two baskets of wood ear mushrooms. As for wild vegetables, she didn't care much. There were quite a few shepherd's purse seeds here that she had sown before, and they were now tender and lush. She liked these and could take them back to make dumplings.

Because she planted them herself, they were all in one place, making them much easier to dig up. She dug up a huge pile, leaving only about a basketful outside. She also found a lot of wild lichen and several pheasant nests, with a total of more than thirty wild eggs.

After finishing all this, it was already late, so Meng Fuyan hurried home.

When they arrived at the educated youth settlement, it was already time for the students to get out of school. Meng Fuyan hurried to the school to pick up her younger brother. By the time she brought him back, she was too tired to move.

Looking at all the wild vegetables and mushrooms in the room, and then at her sister's exhausted face, Meng Yunji pursed her lips and said, "Sis, you must be exhausted. Do you want to take a shower and get some sleep? I'll make dinner."

Meng Fuyan looked at her younger brother, who was nine years old and would be ten after the New Year. At this age, a child should indeed do something for the family.

But over the years, it seems she has protected him too well.

Yunji is actually a very sensible and intelligent child, but his practical skills... it seems she didn't train him much.

Just as Meng Fuyan was about to speak, Gu Tingzhi returned. Seeing so many things in the room, he frowned and asked, "Did you go to the deep mountains?"

There couldn't possibly be that many on the outskirts.

Meng Fuyan replied, "We didn't go too deep. We found it in a relatively secluded place. We were just lucky!"

Gu Tingzhi said seriously, "These deep mountains are deep forests, and there are many wild animals inside. You are not allowed to go there in the future. If you are bored, you can just play around on the outskirts. If you really want to go into the deep mountains to take a look, I will take you there when I have time."

Meng Fuyan could tell that he cared about her, so she didn't argue. "I understand, thank you, Brother Gu!"

Seeing her exhausted face, Gu Tingzhi didn't press her any further. "Go wash your face and rest. Come here for dinner. I'll have Chaosheng cook. His cooking skills are better than mine and Xu Jing's. What would you like to eat?"

Meng Fuyan casually replied, "I'm fine with anything. These mushrooms are freshly picked by me. Let's stir-fry a dish of them; they'll definitely taste delicious."

Gu Tingzhi nodded, "Okay!"

Meng Fuyan immediately instructed her younger brother, "Yunji, there are bamboo strips over there. Go and trim off the roots of the mushrooms, clean off the dirt and grass clippings, and take them to Brother Gu."

"Okay!" Meng Yunji nodded obediently, picked up half a basket of mushrooms, and went out to work.

There were so many mushrooms and shepherd's purse that needed to be cleaned, especially since there were even more in the space. Meng Fuyan didn't want to do this job, so she thought of someone from the educated youth compound, Zhu Hong!

Zhu Hong is a typical northern girl, with a slightly large frame, very tall, and somewhat robust.

This girl was one of the few girls living alone in the educated youth compound. She was very capable and earned full work points, which was equivalent to that of a strong laborer, and even more capable than the average man.

Such girls are usually very popular in rural areas, after all, they are capable!

However, Zhu Hong did not have a good reputation in the village, so much so that she had not married even after several years.

However, she is not very old. She went to the countryside when she was fourteen and is only eighteen this year.

Meng Fuyan went to find Zhu Hong, who had just returned from gathering firewood. Her face was flushed from the heat, and even the few freckles on her face looked adorable.

Meng Fuyan smiled and said, "You have time, right? How about I do you a favor and trade you some food?"

Zhu Hong knew that Meng Fuyan was rich. Everyone in the educated youth compound knew this pampered young lady from the city; she was delicate, beautiful, and wealthy.

She became interested. "What do you need my help with?"

“I brought back a lot of mountain produce, mushrooms and wild vegetables, about a sackful, and a pheasant and a rabbit. If you clean them for me, I’ll give you half a pound of pork.”

Upon hearing the word "pork," Zhu Hong's eyes lit up immediately. "Really?"

"Of course it's true. I've been busy all day and I'm exhausted. Those mushrooms are so fresh, they need to be cleaned and dried in time. I don't have the energy to do that."

"Okay, okay, no problem, I'll get it done for you right away." Zhu Hong was extremely eager.

This doesn't require much effort, it just takes time. There are plenty of people willing to do half a pound of pork.

In rural areas, people rarely eat meat throughout the year, making meat a tempting prospect for everyone.

Meng Fuyan nodded, "Okay, pack your things and come to my place to get them. Mushrooms and wild vegetables need to be cleaned of dirt and grass clippings, and then they can be dried directly."

Zhu Hong patted her chest and said, "Don't worry, I'll be careful and make sure it's spotless. Just wait here, I'll wash my face and come right away."

Meng Fuyan went home first. When she got home, she took out some more mushrooms from her space. Although the mushrooms and wild vegetables were packed in different containers, they totaled about a sackful. She took out a piece of pork from her space, cut off a piece, which weighed about half a pound.

Zhu Hong arrived quickly and looked at the things in front of her with some surprise. "Did you get all of this on the mountain today?"

When did mushrooms and wild vegetables become so easy to find in the mountains?

Meng Fuyan nodded, "Yes, I'm having good luck today."

Zhu Hong didn't ask any more questions. These things were found in pieces, so maybe she was just lucky!

Upon seeing the half-pound of pork, Zhu Hong immediately grinned from ear to ear.

It has a lot of fat and little lean meat, making it top-quality meat!
