Chapter 115 Revisiting the Black Market

After Lin Xiaoxiao paid the money, the tall, thin man let her in.

After Lin Xiaoxiao went inside and turned a corner, she saw that there were gaps of several meters on both sides.

There was a stall where people, whether men or women, were squatting or sitting, their eyes warily observing their surroundings.

Lin Xiaoxiao walked around and found that there were quite a lot of different kinds of things for sale here, including meat, vegetables, grains, and some fabrics.

Lin Xiaoxiao found a spot, put down her basket, which was filled with rice and vegetables.

Her rice was very clean. Rice sold in this era often contained a lot of sand, partly to add weight and partly because it was harvested from the ground, so sand was inevitable.

Lin Xiaoxiao also followed the crowd and secretly mixed in some fine sand.

I prepared several kinds of vegetables: potatoes, cabbage, and green beans, just to test the waters first.

After she set up her stall, she lifted the cloth inside. An older woman's eyes lit up when she saw that she was selling fine rice. She called out, "Comrade, what's in your basket?"

Lin Xiaoxiao gently brushed aside the dry grass covering the rice and vegetables inside.

"Rice and vegetables."

A woman nearby came over and asked, "How much is the rice?"

"Seven cents a pound, and this is good rice," Lin Xiaoxiao said.

The woman reached out and grabbed a handful of rice. She looked at it, then rubbed it between her fingers. She found that the quality was very good. She had been to the black market many times, but such good rice was rare.

Lin Xiaoxiao saw her scooping rice, her face remaining expressionless. The rice from later generations, while not necessarily having the best taste, certainly looked very appealing.

"This rice doesn't look very pure; there's a lot of sand in it," the woman said, frowning.

Lin Xiaoxiao quickly explained, "Comrade, these were accidentally mixed in during the harvest. It won't affect the taste. Just rinse it a few more times when you get back. Grain is hard to come by these days, so my price is fair."

Just then, a middle-aged man walked over, looked at the rice, then at the vegetables, and asked, "How much are these vegetables?"

“These are all five cents a pound, all homegrown and very fresh,” Lin Xiaoxiao replied.

The man thought for a moment and said, "Can you make the rice and vegetables cheaper? I'll take them all."

Lin Xiaoxiao shook her head: "This is one of the few good rice we have at home. If we weren't starving, I wouldn't be willing to sell our grain."

Hearing Lin Xiaoxiao say this, the man pondered for a moment and said, "Alright then, the vegetables are cheap, so just charge me the round number. I'm buying so much, so give me a discount."

When Lin Xiaoxiao took them out of her spatial storage, she had already weighed them; the vegetables were only about twenty-five yuan each.

They didn't suffer much loss and immediately agreed.

She carried over 50 jin of rice and about 25 jin of vegetables.

Lin Xiaoxiao gave a pound of vegetables to the stall next door and borrowed his scale.

After learning her weight, the man couldn't help but say, "This girl is so thin, I didn't expect her to be so strong."

"Hey girl, do you still have any rice at home? If you come often, I can always come to you."

"I rarely come to the county town, and I don't know when I'll come again."

Lin Xiaoxiao was unwilling to sell to individual vendors. Each time, she would carry dozens of kilograms of goods, which was tiring for her and didn't bring in much money.

She came here to observe and stake out the place. She still wants to sell to a big spender, where there's more money and less trouble.

Lin Xiaoxiao did the math in her head: the rice cost thirty-five yuan, the vegetables cost one yuan, for a total of thirty-six yuan.

She looked at the man and said, "Comrade, give me thirty-six."

"Okay then." The man smiled and started taking out his money.

He pulled a wad of cash from his pocket, some crumpled bills and a few dollars in change. He counted it and handed the money to Lin Xiaoxiao.

Lin Xiaoxiao counted the money carefully twice to make sure it was correct, and then put it away.

She helped the man pack the rice and vegetables into the bags he had brought.

The man carried the bag and walked away satisfied.

Lin Xiaoxiao packed her bags and was about to leave.

Suddenly, a commotion came from the alley entrance.

She looked up and saw several people wearing red armbands walking towards her.

Lin Xiaoxiao was startled, realizing they might be there to investigate black market transactions.

She quickly slung the basket over her shoulder and started running. She ran to a secluded corner and hid inside her spatial dimension.

Those people wearing red armbands were looking around the alley.

Lin Xiaoxiao listened to their movements.

After a while, those people seemed not to have noticed anything unusual and gradually walked away.

She emerged from the space, slung her basket over her shoulder, and hurriedly left the alley.

Lin Xiaoxiao carefully walked out of the black market.

There's more than one black market in the county, and Lin Xiaoxiao plans to go to another place to sell the valuable items in her spatial storage.

She put the radio in her basket and went inside.

This time, Lin Xiaoxiao specially changed her outfit and used four White Rabbit candies to pry open an old lady's mouth and roughly find out the location of the black market.

When Lin Xiaoxiao arrived at the black market, she saw that there was a guard at the door.

After exchanging a few words, Lin Xiaoxiao paid two cents and then carried her things inside.

She found a spot, and first took out a radio and a watch.

Even secondhand radios are in high demand.

When Lin Xiaoxiao first put it out, quite a few people came over and asked her about the price.

"This radio has been used for two years, but it's always been fine. It's never been repaired or broken. It's sixty yuan, no receipt required."

The old man who was asking the question frowned as he listened, "You've used this for two years. Even if it's not broken, it's still an old thing. And you still want sixty yuan for it?"
