After everyone had finished their drinks and said their goodbyes, Qian Lai carried a freshly brewed cup of tea and sat down next to Gu Hanchuan.
She didn't say anything, but just sat silently beside him, gazing at the starry sky with him.
Every now and then, she would use a large palm-leaf fan to fan him and drive away mosquitoes and flies.
Tonight, the sky is filled with countless stars.
She disliked astronomy from a young age and couldn't distinguish between different constellations.
In fact, once people have more entertainment options, they rarely think of looking up at the stars.
Today, however, I have a different state of mind.
Unexpectedly, the night was so quiet and long.
Upon closer listening, the croaking of frogs could be heard in the distance.
"Is there a pond in our compound?" Qian Lai asked Gu Hanchuan softly.
"There is a small river that separates our compound from the military hospital's residential area. It takes less than ten minutes to walk from our side to the residential area on the other side."
However, we still have to pass through a grove of trees. This croaking of frogs must be coming from the riverbank.
It turns out they were actually quite close.
Qian Lai thought of Qiao Muting next door, wondering if he was in the hospital or at home with Wenquan and Nuannuan.
"Commander, may I ask you a question?"
Qian Lai felt that he was in a calm mood tonight, so perhaps he could ask him about Tang Yazhu?
"you say."
"That Comrade Tang Yazhu from that day, wasn't she someone you liked?"
Qian Lai didn't dare look at his face, but sensed that the atmosphere was a bit off.
After a while, Gu Hanchuan looked up at the starry sky once again.
"Qian Lai".
"Um?"
"Isn't this starry sky beautiful?"
"Beautiful! Absolutely beautiful."
"Do you want to keep this beauty all to yourself?"
Um?
Qian Lai turned to look at Gu Hanchuan.
Some people are like the starry sky. They are most beautiful when they are hanging in the heavens. Can you bear to let them fall to the mortal world?
Qian Lai understood.
He still harbors that same unresolved issue.
"Commander, I'm curious. You two must have developed feelings for each other before you were injured, right? Why weren't you together then?"
Gu Hanchuan fell silent again.
"Qian Lai, have you ever truly loved someone?"
Good question!
She has never met true love in either of her two lifetimes.
"If you've ever truly loved someone, you'll understand. When you love someone very, very much, and that person, because of you, will either die a terrible death or have their family destroyed, what would you choose?"
I believe you, like me, will see her off as far as you can, right?
What's the meaning!
Qian Lai's curiosity was practically in his throat, but Gu Hanchuan turned his wheelchair around and glided into the house in a couple of moves.
The courtyard became even quieter, with only her gazing at the starry sky.
His words kept repeating in my mind: "If you love someone very, very much, and that person, because of you, either dies a terrible death or their family is destroyed, what would you choose?"
The next morning, Qian Lai got up very early.
She placed the breakfast she had prepared on the living room table, gave a few words of advice to Xiao Li who had arrived early, and then headed straight for the military hospital.
She came to return Qiao Muting's handkerchief and kettle.
The hospital was, as always, overcrowded.
She knew that mornings were the busiest time for doctors.
In order not to disturb his work and to avoid any entanglement, she simply took the items to the service desk next to the registration office.
"Comrade, these are from Dr. Qiao Muting, a neurosurgeon. Could you please pass them on to him for me?"
The two staff members at the information desk were busy attending to patients making inquiries. They had no time to reply to her, only nodding. It was unclear whether they had actually heard her.
She was a little worried and hesitated, but still didn't put the things down.
"Give it to me. I'll take it to Dr. Joe right now."
A slender girl with a gentle smile walked past the service counter.
"And you are?"
“I’m his colleague, my surname is Huang. I’m going to the neurosurgery department right now. Don’t worry, I’ll definitely deliver the things.”
Qian Lai gratefully handed the items to the other person, watched them go up the stairs, and then turned to leave.
She rushed to the city to find John and ask him about the application of live organisms in the laboratory.
On the other side, Huang Jingyi, carrying a thermos and the two items Qian Lai had given her, arrived at the neurosurgery department.
These past two days, Qiao Muting has been acting strangely, his temper is unpredictable.
As Huang Jingyi stood at the nurses' station, she heard him scolding a newly arrived student in his office: "Fine, fine, other people's papers are all arguments, but yours are all jokes."
But I really can't laugh.
Take this back and revise it. If I see this pile of nonsense again, I'll personally post it on your front door.
Then came the sound of things being slammed onto the desk.
A moment later, Qiao Muting led a team of doctors, nurses, and several interns to begin ward rounds.
Everyone held their breath and jogged behind him, not daring to make a sound.
Huang Jingyi did not disturb them and quietly followed behind them.
Unlike the students who were intimidated by his imposing presence and sometimes babbled incoherently or acted erratically, Huang Jingyi only admired him.
He was truly outstanding. Although they were both wearing white lab coats, he seemed to radiate a golden light, like a clear moon shining brightly.
Huang Jingyi gazed at him, captivated, unwilling to look away.
He started asking the students challenging questions and demanding requirements.
Sometimes a question suddenly comes up and catches the other party off guard. In their nervousness, the answer they give is just one mistake after another.
