Chapter 12: An Endless Expanse

"This kang is so warm and cozy. We are so lucky to be able to live in this big house thanks to Jiang Zhiqing."

"Back when we lived in a small hut, we could only heat the kang (a traditional heated bed) with straw in the winter. We stopped using that method a long time ago."

Tan Yumiao lay on the kang (a heated brick bed) and sighed.

Feng Chunzao, lying beside her, also said:

"We have two stoves in our kitchen, but unfortunately there's only one pot."

However, the other stoves can also heat the kang (a heated brick bed), but our small room cannot be heated from the kitchen; we have to carry straw into the room to heat it separately.

I never expected that with you all here, we would actually be able to sleep in the big room.

However, you should be more careful in the future. Ma, the educated youth, is getting close to Sun Caihua, the daughter of Secretary Sun.

Jiang Wenwan kept this in mind.

"I understand. What kind of work have we been doing these past few days?"

"We're preparing the land to plant corn in the spring."

Tomorrow we should go and bring all the corn stacks back for firewood; the rest we can just burn in the field.

Jiang Wenwan had never met Zhang before, and thought it seemed quite interesting. She didn't go to work in the afternoon, and they ate a sweet potato and went to bed early in the evening.

I had to get up early the next morning to go to work.

Jiang Wenwan specially wore coarse knitted gloves, and Hu Qinghua rolled her eyes.

"So dramatic!"

Seeing that she had brought them, Zhu Xiaomin also took out coarse wool gloves from her bundle, which were actually work gloves, and put them on as well.

"With you by my side, I'll bring it along too."

Feng Chunzao and Tan Yumiao glanced enviously at the gloves in their hands, but said nothing.

In the morning, we had sweet potato porridge, along with dried radish that Feng Chunzao had sun-dried herself.

I must say, it's actually quite delicious.

Upon arriving at the field, the brigade leader stood with a middle-aged man who had very little hair.

The captain sighed, holding his pipe in his hand.

When they arrived, I introduced them to the group.

"This is Secretary Sun of our brigade, and that is Accountant Wang."

Then he introduced Jiang Wenwan and the others to them, and sighed:

"It rained a bit yesterday, so today's work will be tough, but we must rise to the challenge."

The corn stalks are all wet today. You need to clear them all out of the field so we can till the soil.

Jiang Wenwan glanced at the corn stalks in the field; thankfully, they weren't too badly wet.

If you take it back and let it dry in the sun, it can still be used as firewood.

It was this endless expanse of land that made her feel a little dizzy.

The thought of working from one end of the field to the other filled her with despair.

But since she's already here, what else can she do but work?

The villagers glanced at the newly arrived educated youth, seemingly casually.

A woman in her early twenties with a large pregnant belly walked over.

She glanced at Jiang Wenwan and the other two, and exclaimed in surprise:

"These must be the new educated youth who arrived this year."

Three people have come. Will they all fit in that little room?

Before Feng Chunzao could speak, Tan Yumiao said smugly:

"The little house is definitely not big enough for us, so we're all staying in the big house right now!"

Feng Chunzao whispered to Jiang Wenwan from the side:

"Her name is Xia Xiaolan. She was one of the educated youth who came with us before. Now she is married to the second son of Accountant Wang."

Jiang Wenwan nodded. There was such a person in the original owner's memories, but this person died from postpartum hemorrhage.

Then, Wang's wife arranged for her son to marry a girl from one of her relatives' families.

Two days after marrying her, the girl started experiencing morning sickness, which clearly indicated that she wasn't her son's child.

This whole thing is enough to keep the village entertained for days.

However, Xia Xiaolan was quite surprised to hear that they had actually moved into the main house.

Not only was she surprised, but the other villagers were also surprised.

They knew perfectly well what kind of people those were in the educated youth settlements.

"What?!

"You've all moved into the main house, so where will Ma Zhiqing and the others live?"

"They live in a small house?"

You have no idea how formidable Jiang Zhiqing was yesterday; she threw them all out in one go.

Then we moved into the big house, while Ma and Liu, the educated youth, went to stay in our old little house.

The girl who came over to ask questions looked to be about seventeen or eighteen years old, wearing a floral-patterned thin jacket and with two braids.

Upon hearing this, he glanced at Jiang Wenwan, whom Tan Yumiao was pointing at, and glared at her fiercely.

"Comrade Sun Caihua, you can't blame Comrade Jiang. It's just that our little house is too small to fit five people."

It's actually quite nice to switch rooms with Ma Zhiqing now; our little room is spacious enough for two people.

"What do you mean by 'comfortable'? That little house is so cramped."

If you can't find a place to stay, why don't you stay at a fellow villager's house?

Why were Ma Zhiqing and the others kicked out?

When Jiang Wenwan heard that this was still to stand up for Ma Debi, she laughed.

"I think you're right. If you can't find a place to stay or don't want to stay, you can go stay at a fellow villager's house."

I think it would be great if Ma Zhiqing stayed at your house.

"Secretary Sun is also the secretary of our brigade, so staying at Secretary Sun's house will definitely allow me to experience the influence of culture and knowledge."

Sun Caihua was taken aback by her unexpected remark and began to seriously consider the possibility.

For some reason, the girl blushed.

Then she looked at Maddie, who rolled his eyes at her.

He then turned and glared at Jiang Wenwan.

"Comrade Jiang, if you don't speak, no one will think you're mute."

Jiang Wenwan shrugged. They were divided into groups by the brigade leader. Since these newly arrived educated youths didn't know how to do farm work, the village elders took care of them.

Xia Zhiqing, supporting her belly, glanced at Jiang Wenwan.

"I didn't expect you to be so capable."
