Chapter 189 Being Watched

Jiang Wenwan walked into the room with a smile and looked at Sister Xu sitting on the kang (a heated brick bed).

"Sister Xu, your husband Xu Ke complained to me. You need to be more respectful!"

Aunt Xu was amused by her words and nodded repeatedly in agreement.

"Okay, I promise I won't get out of bed for the next two days, alright?"

He just knew how to coax me, so I stayed on the kang (heated brick bed) all day studying, and my head started to ache.

Seeing her complaining, Jiang Wenwan smiled and her eyes crinkled.

"Knowledge is power. Comrade Xu is teaching you how to gain power!"

"Ha, I can't interfere in your relationship. I'm leaving after my shot, and I'll come back tomorrow."

She took out a syringe, and Old Xu, who was standing nearby, stepped forward and grabbed his wife's hand.

Does this injection hurt?

"It must hurt!"

Hearing Jiang Wenwan say this, Lao Xu held his wife's hand even tighter.

"Don't be afraid, I'm here with you!"

If it hurts, just hold my hand tightly.

Jiang Wenwan glanced at the two of them holding hands and a smile bloomed on her lips.

She'll drink this bowl of dog food first, as a sign of respect.

Don't be fooled by the thin needle in your buttock; it really hurts.

"hiss!"

"It doesn't hurt, it doesn't hurt, I'm here!"

Inside the house, the young couple held hands and comforted each other.

The scene was quite heartwarming.

Jiang Wenwan removed the needle and deliberately said:

"Comrade Xu, could you please press on this injection site to help me, otherwise it will bleed."

Old Xu quickly helped press on the injection site.

"Okay, keep pressing for a little longer! I'm leaving now."

She really did leave on a whim, stuffing her things into her pocket and heading out.

Old Xu was still pressing on the injection site on his wife's hand, so he couldn't come out to see her off.

"Alright, then I won't see you off here. Take care on your journey!"

Jiang Wenwan responded:

"Know."

Anyway, I'm not going to the pharmaceutical factory today, and I'm thinking about what she got at the recycling station.

She pulled back the reins as she rode her horse along the road, turned it around, and headed towards the county town.

I parked the horse outside the scrap metal recycling station and took out two steamed buns wrapped in oil paper from my storage space.

"Auntie, I'm here again. This time I brought you two bags, which I made myself. I don't know if they'll taste good, but you should try them."

The aunt didn't expect that Jiang Wenwan would bring food for her.

He wiped his hands on the apron he was wearing.

"Oh, that's so embarrassing."

After wiping my hands, I looked at them again, and they were still dirty.

"Wait here, I'm going to wash my hands."

Aunt Wang said while washing her hands:

"They spend all day dealing with these scraps, and there's never a clean time."

You said you were coming, so why did you bring steamed buns?

I feel really embarrassed, but I definitely have to try your cooking.

They say good-looking people must be really good at cooking!

Jiang Wenwan handed her the steamed bun.

"Auntie, please eat slowly. I'll go inside and see if there's anything you need."

The auntie couldn't wait to take a bite of the steamed bun, which was filled with meat.

"Okay, go in and find it yourself. Make yourself at home and don't be shy."

Jiang Wenwan smiled and continued rummaging through the things she wanted.

Just then, I heard the woman outside talking to someone.

"Why are you asking again? It's true that the person who bought your table was a military wife, but she's never come back!"

How would I know what happened?

Jiang Wenwan looked up and saw that it was Zhang Fendou, whom she had met twice before.

Zhang Fendou looked into the courtyard and saw her there.

"Oh, I didn't expect to see you here!"

What are you doing?

Jiang Wenwan squatted on the ground, flipping through things. She noticed that he seemed quite familiar with her.

He casually picked up a small stool next to him and sat down, saying:

"I'll help my aunt sort through the junk, but you..."

Zhang Fendou rolled his eyes.

What's wrong with me?

I'm from a family of three generations of poor farmers. By the way, is there any woman in your residential compound who brought a table back home the other day?

The table is so big, and the surface is badly damaged with dents and pits. If you saw it, you would never, ever remember it.

Jiang Wenwan shook her head without changing her expression.

"I didn't see it. If I had, I would have remembered it."

My memory is excellent.

I haven't asked you yet, which brigade are you from?

When Jiang Wenwan asked him which brigade he belonged to, Zhang Fendou didn't want to answer and directly changed the subject:

"Never mind if you don't know, I'll come again next time."

Watching his departing figure, Jiang Wenwan turned to look at Aunt Wang.

"Auntie, was that table his last time?"

Didn't he sell them all to a scrap metal recycling station?

Why would you want to buy it back? That table is so dilapidated.

"If I go back and fix it, I'll need another piece of wood, so I might as well chop it up and use it as firewood."

"Burned?"

It's cooked well.

I'll tell this kid later that they burned the table.

That way, I won't have to deal with him asking me all the time; it's gotten so annoying.

I don't know why his old, shabby table is so precious to him.

Jiang Wenwan thought to herself:

"With so much gold hidden inside, how could it not be precious?"

However, judging from the way this kid came looking for it, he obviously knew what was under the table.

Another possibility is that he simply put the gold bars on the table.

Then another question arises: where did he get so many gold bars?

But then I remembered what my aunt said—that he had previously donated quite a few old items here—which suggested it must have been from a wealthy family…

She quickly found two things, gave her aunt a dollar and twenty cents, and then planned to go back.
