“We’ve always eaten like this, and we don’t think there’s anything wrong with it, right, in-laws?”
She was convinced that if her second aunt wanted her daughter to have a good life in her home, she had to treat her well too.
Second Aunt wasn't going to give her a friendly look right now.
What kind of behavior is it to come to her house and slap her guest in the face?
"I don't know, but my family doesn't eat the black part inside the conch."
Are you going to eat it?
"Then I'll give you the black one from this conch shell."
Jiang Wenwan almost burst out laughing. Her second aunt was quite a character!
Isn't this the same as feeding people shit?
In the middle of their table was a large aluminum basin filled with sea snails.
Each one was as big as her fist.
There was also a fish tofu dish, a large yellow croaker, a vegetable dish, and a stir-fried pork dish.
The boss fish has a special flavor; it's flat and brown, and boneless, or rather, it's stewed to a certain degree.
Its bones are edible; they're crunchy.
Aunt Sun gave her a disapproving look.
"I'm not eating it. You must have spent a lot of money on this seafood feast, right?"
"It's alright. I bought some because the fishermen were returning from the sea."
As her second aunt looked at Jiang Wenwan, she said:
"If you want to eat any seafood, you can trade with the fishermen here."
"When you have time to come see me, I'll show you around and let you know their usual fishing times."
Jiang Wenwan really does like eating seafood.
Just like these sea snails, once they're cleaned, seasoned with salt and ginger, and cooked, they're simply scooped out and eaten—she finds them incredibly fresh.
“Okay, then I’ll come find my second aunt tomorrow and go with her to the fishermen to exchange some sea fish.”
The salted fish my grandma mailed me before was so delicious! Auntie, did you make it? You have to teach me how sometime.
Upon hearing this, Auntie's smile widened.
"Okay, it's just salted fish. I'll teach you. We don't have much else here, but we have plenty of sea fish."
Jiang Wenwan wanted to ask another question, but after glancing at Aunt Sun across from her, she decided to turn back and ask her second aunt separately.
Upon hearing this, Jiang Mo immediately replied:
"I love fishing the most. Tell me what kind of fish you like to eat, and I'll catch it for you!"
He was fine when he didn't speak, but as soon as he did, Jiang Wenwan realized she hadn't asked him what he did for a living.
