The dormitory is a standard ten-person room.
Five bunk beds were placed against the left and right walls, leaving a narrow aisle in the middle.
The ground was rough cement, and the walls were painted with whitewash, some of which were already peeling and mottled.
The only source of light was the small, dusty window at the far end.
Su Tang made a judgment immediately after only one glance around.
She went straight to the innermost bed, the one by the window.
This is the best location, furthest from the entrance, so it won't disturb people getting up or moving around at night.
Being by the window provides good ventilation and allows you to observe the outside situation at any time.
Without hesitation, she chose the upper bunk, which offered a wide view and, most importantly, peace and quiet, as no one could sleep above her.
She tossed her things up into the air with a swift and decisive motion.
"I'll sleep in the top bunk."
Wang Xiaoya, Liu Landi, and Chen Xiaocao were both surprised and delighted to see this.
They never expected that by following Su An, they would not only be the first to get their things, but also the first to enter the dormitory and choose their beds!
At this moment, Wang Xiaoya had only one thought in her mind: I need to be closer to Su An so that I can feel at ease.
Seeing that Su An had chosen the upper bunk, she immediately grabbed her belongings and climbed onto the second upper bunk opposite Su An, using both hands and feet.
That spot, also by the window, was the second best in the entire dormitory. She put her things away, leaned on the edge of the bed, and gave Su Tang a grateful yet shy smile.
Chen Xiaocao was quiet and didn't like climbing up and down. She looked around and thought Su An's lower bunk was a good spot; it was close to her, made her feel safe, and was convenient for getting things.
She hesitated for a moment, then asked me in a low voice, "Comrade Su An, may I...may I sleep on the bed below yours?"
“Okay.” Su Tang nodded.
With Su Tang's permission, Chen Xiaocao seemed relieved and happily placed her things on the lower bunk of bed number one.
Liu Landi didn't like sleeping on the lower bunk. She felt that with people coming and going in the aisle, she might accidentally bump into the bed, making it difficult to sleep soundly.
She glanced at the remaining beds and finally chose the third bunk bed in the center of the dormitory, which was placed next to Su Tang's bed.
This central position allows her to clearly see people at both the doorway and the window, noting who goes in and out, and any subtle movements. It's a good spot, offering both offensive and defensive advantages. She was quite satisfied and quickly tossed her things onto the upper bunk.
In less than two minutes, the four people quickly chose their spots, occupying the four beds with the best views and locations in the entire dormitory.
Everyone felt a sense of secret joy and relief at having seized the initiative.
"We...we still have ten minutes!" Wang Xiaoya looked out the window and cheered softly.
Su Tang didn't rush to tidy up; instead, she first went to check the bathroom in the corner of the dormitory.
The place was very small, with only a squat toilet and a row of cold cement troughs with a few old-fashioned faucets dripping water.
Su Tang thought to herself, "Ten people sharing this place, it seems that washing up every morning will be a tough battle from now on."
She quickly returned to her bed and changed into her brand-new Type 65 military green training uniform in no time.
The clothes were a bit oversized, but the material was very sturdy, and they had a smell that was a mixture of industrial dyes and sunshine.
