He finally understood.
Every word Su An said in the washroom was not meant to humiliate him, but rather to state a fact.
In her eyes, she really... didn't even deserve to make him laugh.
After a long while, Gao Kai walked step by step to Su An.
He bowed deeply, so deeply that his head was almost buried in his chest.
"Teacher Su... I apologize for what I did to you today."
She said these words with immense difficulty, yet with utmost sincerity.
Su Tang finally stopped what she was doing. She turned around and handed him a gleaming gun barrel, her tone still calm, revealing no emotion.
"The rifles of the Second Battalion have been modified, with longer barrels and rifling compensators, making their effective range and accuracy significantly higher than our Type 56 semi-automatic rifles. During the exercise, we would be overwhelmed by them."
Gao Kai instinctively took the gun, the cold metallic touch startling him. He listened blankly, his mind not yet fully processing what was happening.
Su Tang ignored his dazed expression, picked up a piece of paper covered with sketches from the table, and spread it on the workbench.
“I don’t have time to modify all the guns like that, but we can concentrate our resources and modify one rifle.”
"I'll replace the firing pin to improve firing stability. I'll re-grind the trigger assembly for smoother firing. Most importantly, I'm going to add a muzzle brake of my own design to minimize muzzle rise and improve rapid-fire accuracy."
Her fingers traced lightly across the drawing, and her clear eyes sparkled with confidence.
"I couldn't finish it even if I stayed up all night by myself."
As soon as he finished speaking, Old Man Sun was the first to jump up.
"Nonsense! Su, I know you're capable! But this is no joke! What time is it? There are only a few hours left until dawn! You want to modify a rifle? And you want to add a muzzle brake? This is simply a fantasy! And if Instructor Lei finds out about this, you and I will both be in deep trouble!"
Gao Kai, who had just been completely impressed, was also taken aback by this audacious and almost insane plan.
He opened his mouth, his voice hoarse: "Teacher Su... Master Sun is right. Minor repairs might be okay, but such a major change... there's simply no time. Besides, even if we fix it, the Second Battalion has an overall equipment advantage, and our single rifle... I'm afraid..."
He didn't finish his sentence, but his meaning was clear: this was just a drop in the ocean and utterly meaningless.
Faced with their questions, Su Tang did not refute them, but calmly asked Gao Kai, "When you were in the washroom, did you see which gun they were using?"
Gao Kai was stunned for a moment, then his face burned as that humiliating memory was brought back to life.
He gritted his teeth and nodded: "I see clearly. It's a modified Type 56 assault rifle, but with significant changes. They lengthened the barrel, replaced the handguard, and... and there's something hanging below the barrel... if I'm not mistaken, it should be a grenade launcher."
How can we fight like this?
They're using rifles like cannons!
"That's right."
Su Tang picked up a pencil and quickly sketched on another piece of white paper. A few minutes later, a structural sketch of a new type of rifle appeared on the paper, its precision making Gao Kai's eyes almost pop out.
"Its advantages are its great power, long range, and strong firepower."
Su Tang pointed to the blueprints.
"But the drawbacks are equally fatal. In pursuit of power and versatility, it sacrifices reliability. The more complex the structure, the higher the failure rate. That kind of grenade launcher puts a huge strain on the strength of the barrel and receiver, requiring maintenance after only a few shots. Moreover, the recoil must be enormous, making burst fire accuracy a major weakness."
In the dim light, Su Tang placed the two drawings on the table together and said softly:
"But their guns are for intimidating people. My gun is for killing people."
