Chapter 26: Black Market Supplies Hoarding at Nine-Eyed Bridge! (1/2)

Su Tang thanked her, but had already made up her mind.

That evening, Su Tang changed into a worn-out cotton jacket and trousers that she had found in her spatial storage; the colors were rather dull and gray.

I applied a little powder made from ground turmeric root to my face to make my skin look a bit duller.

He was wearing an old straw hat, with the brim pulled low.

With this makeover, the originally charming and beautiful eldest daughter of the Su family instantly became an inconspicuous country girl.

She looked at herself in the small mirror and nodded in satisfaction.

The "ghost market" at Jiuyanqiao truly lived up to its reputation.

As dusk fell, dim yellow oil lamps or flashlights began to illuminate the alleyways along the river.

The ground was covered with rags or straw mats, on which all sorts of things were placed.

There were grain, cloth coupons, and meat coupons that were secretly taken out to sell, as well as some old watches and radio parts of dubious origin.

Some people were even quietly hawking "rare medicinal herbs" and "antique trinkets".

Su Tang found it amusing; this "newly unearthed" item was probably just aged yesterday.

The air was filled with a damp, peculiar smell, a mixture of various odors.

People spoke in hushed tones, like the hum of mosquitoes.

Their eyes, however, darted around warily like searchlights, as if afraid of encountering "red armband" officers or "plainclothes officers."

Most transactions are quick, with money and goods exchanged immediately, as people are afraid of waiting even a second longer.

With her keen observation skills, Su Tang weaved through the crowd.

Instead of making a move, she observed first to understand the ins and outs of the market.

This place definitely has good stuff, but it's also full of swindlers and cheaters.

Soon, she identified several stalls that seemed to have a relatively stable supply of goods and that offered decent quality products.

"Hey girl, what would you like? I have some dried sweet potatoes that I just picked up from the countryside, they're really sweet!"

"And the homemade fermented soybean paste is so fragrant!" A woman wearing a headscarf called out to her in a low voice.

Su Tang glanced at the dried sweet potatoes; their quality was so-so, and shook her head.

She had mountains of food in her space, so she didn't really care about these things.

What she needs is something more tangible and scarcer.

After wandering around for a while, she saw a middle-aged man in a corner with several burlap sacks in front of him.

There were also several rattan cages next to it, and there seemed to be living creatures moving inside.

Su Tang walked over, pulling her hat brim even lower, and her voice, mimicking that of a country girl, was slightly timid and hoarse:

"Brother, do you... do you have any in-demand items?"

The man gave her a wary look: "How much do you want?"

Su Tang already had a plan in mind, and said directly:

"Meat, dried goods, live poultry, seeds. I want as much as you have."

The man's eyes lit up; this was a big deal.

"Yes! But it's not cheap."

"I know the rules."

Su Tang took out a wad of ten-yuan notes from her pocket and waved them in front of him.

The man immediately beamed with joy:

"Girl, you're so straightforward! Come with me!"

Under the eaves of an abandoned, dilapidated house, the man lifted several burlap sacks.

Good heavens!

Dozens of kilograms of perfectly dried cured pork, glistening sausages, and a pressed duck wrapped tightly in oil paper.

Inside the cage were a dozen or so plump pheasants and rabbits, as well as a few squealing piglets that looked lively and energetic.

"These are all from hunters in the mountains, genuine wild game! Take this piglet home and raise it, I guarantee it will grow fat!" the man introduced as if presenting a treasure.

Su Tang's eyes lit up; these were all wonderful things!
