Bai Wei's words echoed in her ears like a curse.
"Your life is the greatest threat to her!"
"As long as you're still here, the investigation into her will not stop! Can you guarantee you can withstand the interrogation without saying a single wrong word? If you let something slip, it will be her who gets killed!"
Yes, as long as she lives, Sister Su An will never have a peaceful day.
She can't be so selfish.
She has already eaten so many good things from Sister Su An and received so much care from her; now it's time for her to repay Sister Su An.
She sat up slowly, as gently as a cat, as if afraid of waking her sleeping companion.
By the faint moonlight streaming through the window, she carefully unfolded the candy wrapper she had been clutching tightly, and smoothed out the wrinkles with her rough fingertips again and again.
Then, with an almost clumsy focus, she began to fold.
Her fingers were thick, far less nimble than Su An's, and the lines she folded were crooked and uneven.
But she was very serious and devout.
After a long while, an ugly paper crane, though its shape was barely discernible, appeared in her palm.
She brought the paper crane to her lips and breathed on it gently, as if she could blow her blessings and wishes into it.
She said it silently in her heart.
"You must...be well."
After doing all this, she felt as if she had completed a sacred ritual.
She got out of bed and stepped barefoot onto the cold cement floor.
She first went to Chen Xiaocao's bedside and tucked her in. Then she went to Liu Landi's bedside, looked at her sleeping profile, and silently said, "I'm sorry."
Finally, her gaze fell on Su Tang's empty bed.
She stood there for a very long time.
Then, she turned around, walked to her bed, folded her training uniform neatly, and placed it on the headboard. She then meticulously folded the military blanket that had been with her for several months into a perfect "tofu block."
This was the last time she, as a soldier, tidied up her quarters.
She gently placed the small paper crane, which carried all her emotions, in the center of her pillow.
After doing all this, she took one last look at the dormitory where she had lived for several months, a place filled with laughter and tears, then turned around and walked without hesitation toward the open back window.
...
"Squeak—"
The jeep braked suddenly and stopped at the camp gate.
Su Tang jumped out of the car almost before it had come to a complete stop, yelled "Thank you" to the driver, and then rushed towards the dormitory area.
The night was deep, and the camp was completely silent except for the footsteps of the patrolling sentries echoing clearly across the empty parade ground.
The closer Su Tang got to her dormitory, the stronger her unease became, like an invisible hand gripping her heart tightly.
She practically ran up to the dormitory building.
The door to the female soldiers' dormitory number six was ajar.
Su Tang slowed her steps, gently pushed open the door, and slipped inside.
The dormitory was quiet, with the girls' breathing rising and falling evenly and steadily.
Everything seemed normal.
Su Tang's tense nerves suddenly relaxed, and she let out a long sigh of relief...
