Just one glance.
Gao Kai felt as if the blood in his body had frozen in that instant. All his prepared words, all his well-intentioned insistence, all his boiling anger and fighting spirit, vanished instantly under her calm gaze, like a punctured balloon.
Ignoring the undercurrents behind her, Su Tang walked alone toward the banyan tree.
She walked slowly, her steps steady, each step measured as if it had been cut with a ruler. Her slender figure appeared somewhat frail on the dusty training field, yet it exuded an indescribable determination.
She was actually quite curious herself.
She could never see through Jiang Yan.
He was one of the few people in the entire Third Battalion who gave her a sense of "kindness." Not in terms of strength, but in terms of mindset. He was intelligent enough, calm enough, and patient enough.
To say he favored Bai Wei is one thing, but from beginning to end, he never showed Bai Wei any concern beyond that of an ordinary comrade. Even when Bai Wei repeatedly provoked him or made mistakes, his attitude was the same as the instructor's: a cold, businesslike indifference devoid of any personal emotion.
However, it's unlikely that he had no feelings for Bai Wei. After all, they grew up together, and that bond couldn't be easily broken. Especially after Wang Xiaoya's death, Bai Wei was isolated by everyone and nearly suffered a mental breakdown; it's impossible for Jiang Yan to have no feelings for her at all.
So, what exactly did he want to say to me today?
To demand an explanation? That doesn't seem likely.
Pleading for mercy? That's not like him at all.
Su Tang quickly went through all the possibilities in her mind and prepared a response plan for each one. No matter what tricks Jiang Yan played, she could handle them.
As she approached, Xu Gaogui clearly sensed the awkward atmosphere. He glanced at Su Tang, who was walking towards him, then at Jiang Yan, who had suddenly become somewhat stiff beside him. He wisely adjusted his glasses and made an excuse.
"Um... Squad Leader Jiang Yan, I'll go check on the training progress of Squad Three first."
After saying that, he slipped away and disappeared into the training crowd in the distance.
So, under the huge banyan tree, only Jiang Yan and Su Tang remained.
Su Tang stopped three steps away from Jiang Yan. This was a safe distance, allowing her to advance or retreat as needed.
She didn't speak first, but stood quietly, prepared to face any "interrogation".
Jiang Yan remained with his back to her, his posture upright like a pine tree, his broad shoulders supporting his slightly faded training uniform, exuding a restrained sense of strength. He seemed to be looking at the distant shooting range, yet also seemed to be looking at nothing at all, simply lost in his own thoughts.
However, Su Tang's eyes, honed by countless trials, caught a glimpse of an indescribable heaviness and... tension in his seemingly calm back.
Yes, it was nervousness.
His neck was taut, a subconscious posture of vigilance. His usually steady, long, and well-defined fingers were unconsciously curling and then slowly relaxing, repeating this subtle movement.
After a full ten seconds, which felt like an eternity, Jiang Yan finally slowly turned around.
His gaze fell on Su Tang with a complicated expression.
Those eyes, which were always as deep and still as an ancient well, were now churning with too many emotions that Su Tang couldn't understand. There was admiration, curiosity, inquiry, and even a hint of... awkwardness that even he himself hadn't noticed.
He didn't bring up Bai Wei's matter right away, as Su Tang had expected.
He didn't even look her in the eye, his gaze fixed on the empty ground beside her, and asked a question that completely surprised Su Cheng:
"How are your preparations going for next week's...unrestricted combat assessment?"
His voice was a bit dry, even a bit lower and hoarse than usual.
Su Tang was slightly taken aback.
She had prepared eighteen response plans and imagined countless ways to start a heated debate, but... he just asked this?
