Chapter 19: Use it or die!

Xu Xinghe bought four large meat buns and ate them with Lian Xiao.

The canned food was cold, so it was a little oily. She only took one bite and didn't touch it anymore.

Lian Xiao glanced at it twice, but in the end, he took it and ate it.

There was no way around it; he was taught from a young age that he shouldn't waste food.

Seeing such good canned food sitting there unfinished makes me feel uncomfortable.

He couldn't help but look up at Xu Xinghe.

She showed no reaction, as if it were perfectly normal for others to eat her leftovers.

Xu Xinghe didn't take it to heart at all, because she only ate one bite of the canned food, using a clean spoon, and never touched it again.

Besides, times have changed, and food is very precious now, especially canned meat that is only available to the military, which is the best of the best.

If you can't finish it, you can't throw it away; that would be too wasteful.

The train continued its journey.

Xu Xinghe took out a book from her bag and read a few pages whenever she had free time, then went to sleep when she got tired.

Otherwise, the time spent on the bus would be too unbearable.

And so another day passed.

The afterglow of the setting sun shone into the carriage, casting patches of yellow and red light.

Xu Xinghe watched quietly, and for the first time felt the tranquility of life.

She was no longer in the basement; she could look up and see the boundless sky, surrounded by people, no longer alone.

"Beep beep beep—"

The train's horn suddenly sounded.

"Attention passengers! Attention passengers! We are now broadcasting an emergency announcement—in sleeper car number five of this train, a heroic comrade has suddenly fallen ill. He is currently experiencing dizziness, vomiting, and weakness, and has fallen into a coma. The situation is quite urgent. We request medical professionals or anyone with medical knowledge to come and help this ailing hero overcome this difficult time."

The horn was very loud.

Almost everyone looked up.

Xu Xinghe jumped out of bed.

She suddenly remembered something from her past life.

Around this time, she saw in the newspaper that an old general had died from a sudden heart attack on a train and was already dead when he was taken to the station hospital.

At the time, half a page of the newspaper was dedicated to praising the old general's heroic deeds, and many people spontaneously went to see him off.

Could it be him?

Xu Xinghe put on her shoes and walked quickly toward carriage number five.

Lian Xiao grabbed her wrist. "Where are you going?"

"I'll go check on that patient."

"You can cure diseases?"

Xu Xinghe shook her head. "No, but I have medicine that might be of help."

"No, you're not allowed to go." Lian Xiao increased the pressure, his hand gripping the smooth, white skin beneath. "Medicine needs to be appropriate for the condition. What if your medicine doesn't cure the person and causes harm instead? Can you bear that responsibility? Just to be safe, don't meddle. There are so many people on this train, there must be a doctor among them."

If it really is that old general, then it means that even the doctor on the train couldn't save him.

Xu Xinghe didn't want to watch a hero die like this.

"I'm just going to take a look."

Seeing that she was determined, Lian Xiao could only stand up and say, "You can go and see, but don't interfere."

"good."

The two of them went to carriage number five together.

Several flight attendants had already gathered here.

Upon seeing Xu Xinghe, one of them immediately stepped forward and said, "Excuse me, we can't go through here for the time being. The patient needs a relatively quiet environment."

Xu Xinghe peeked inside and saw several burly men. Although they were dressed simply, they had an imposing presence and sharp eyes, and it was clear at a glance that they were bodyguards.

"Sister, I'd like to ask, is the sick person General Zhang?"

The flight attendant nodded. "Yes, do you know General Zhang?"

“I don’t know it, but I want to go in and take a look. Although I’m not a doctor and I don’t know how to treat patients, I have some emergency medicine that might be of help.”

"Okay, then come in."

In any case, having medicine is better than having none.

In the sleeper compartment.

An old man lay on a couch, barely breathing.

His aged face was bloodless, and his lips were blue, as if he would pass away at any moment.

A short while later, several passengers with medical knowledge arrived and went to check on the situation.

Xu Xinghe took two steps back and stood quietly, her eyes filled with worry.

Seeing that she really didn't intend to interfere, Lian Xiao breathed a slight sigh of relief, and his eyes softened.

I didn't expect her to be so kind-hearted.

I've been busy these past two days, catching thieves and delivering medicine.

"This patient is having an acute heart attack, it's very serious, and we need to stop at the station as soon as possible to get him to the hospital for emergency treatment. We only have half an hour at most, otherwise he might not survive."

Upon hearing the doctor's words, the bodyguards' expressions turned grim.

"Half an hour...how is that possible!"

The train now travels through uninhabited land, and as far as the eye can see, there are only rolling mountains and vast stretches of saline-alkali land that are unsuitable for farming.

The train attendant bit her lip. "Even if the train speeds up, it will still take at least five hours to reach the next city."

The doctor sighed and shook his head. "Five hours is definitely not enough. This patient is too old. If he were younger, he could use medication to help him through it, but now he can only tough it out. Even if he can hold on, he will definitely not make it for more than two hours."

The other doctors all gave the same diagnosis and treatment opinion.

The safest option is to find a hospital within half an hour.

Otherwise, there is only one way out: death.

The carriage was deathly silent.

A somber and oppressive atmosphere spread.

Even the red of the sunset seemed to deepen.

Xu Xinghe took a deep breath and finally spoke, "I have some medicine, it's very mild, it might be able to help."

Lian Xiao tried to stop her, but she had already taken out the pills she had made. "These are my family's heirloom medicines, used for emergencies, but I can't guarantee they will work. I just think... since things have come to this, maybe we can give it a try."

The bodyguard took the porcelain bottle and handed it to the doctor.

The other party took it out to examine it, but couldn't tell what kind of medicine it was at all.

"I'm sorry, I don't know what this is, so whether you want to take it or not is up to you."

The bodyguards exchanged glances and remained silent.

To use or not to use?

Using this method might give the old general a glimmer of hope, but it could also hasten his death.

If not, we can only pray to God that the old general can hold on a little longer, until he is sent to the hospital after five hours.

But will that really work?

A young, bony hand suddenly appeared and took the porcelain bottle away. "Use the medicine. I know Grandpa's condition. He can't wait five hours. We have no choice but to try anything."

Xu Xinghe looked over and saw a boy who looked only sixteen or seventeen years old walk out from behind the bodyguard. His height was like a poplar tree sprouting in early spring.

He had a very fair complexion, and when he looked over with his slightly pursed lips, the emotion in his eyes was heartbreaking.

He quickly walked to the bedside and personally fed the old general the pills.

Lian Xiao stepped forward, shielding Xu Xinghe behind him. "I am a member of the Lian family, you should have heard of me. This girl is my sister, she was just trying to help. She also said that she can't guarantee whether she can save him, so if anything happens to this old general, you'll be responsible for it yourselves, don't come looking for trouble with us."

The boy nodded, his voice clear and crisp, just like his personality, "No."

"That's fine then." Lian Xiao grabbed Xu Xinghe's wrist, brooking no resistance. "Let's go."

"etc……"

"What are you waiting for!"

Should we wait for this old general to die?

He didn't believe that such a serious illness could be cured with a single pill.

If the other party really causes trouble, then they will get off at the next stop, contact Grandpa, and send him to negotiate!
