Xu Xinghe blinked. "No."
Jiang Linchuan then noticed that there were a few drops of dark red blood on her pants, which were still clearly visible even though they had dried.
His face darkened. He put down the steamed bun in his hand, grabbed her arm, and examined her closely. "Why is there blood on you? Are you injured?"
“It’s not my blood.” Xu Xinghe recounted in detail how she encountered the mad horse on the road and how Lin Hui was cut by a wooden plank while trying to save her. “My sister-in-law originally wanted to save me, but she ended up getting so badly injured herself.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Zhang Cishu put down his lunchbox and said in a cold tone, "You don't need to feel guilty. You could have dodged it. She insisted on rushing at you. She got hurt entirely of her own making."
Xu Xinghe was well aware of this principle, but she still shook her head. "You can't say that. No matter what, my sister-in-law's original intention was good. She was injured to save me. Even if I didn't need her to save me, her good intentions cannot be denied."
Jiang Linchuan nodded, "I know you're kind-hearted, but don't take it too hard. I'll go with you to see her when we're done."
Xu Xinghe nodded and began to clean up the lunch boxes that the group had finished eating.
Just as I finished tidying up, I saw Director Li hurrying towards us.
Xu Xinghe immediately stepped forward, "Director Li."
"Comrade Xu, what are you doing here?" Director Li said, then noticed the lunchbox in her hand and realized, "You're here to deliver food to Commander Jiang?"
"Yes, Director Li, I was just about to talk to you about this. Your wife is injured."
"What?" Director Li's expression changed drastically, and he hurriedly asked, "How did Huihui get injured? Is she seriously injured?"
Xu Xinghe briefly explained the situation.
Upon hearing this, Director Li stamped his feet in distress, his face full of heartache, "How could she be so careless!"
He immediately turned to the guard beside him and ordered, "Quick! Prepare the car! I need to get back to the guesthouse right away!"
"Director Li, let me go back with you. I also want to check on your wife's condition."
"Okay! Get in the car quickly!" Director Li didn't refuse. At this moment, he was preoccupied with Lin Hui's injuries and just wanted to get back to see her as soon as possible.
The guards quickly drove over; it was a military jeep.
Director Li got into the car first, and Xu Xinghe followed suit.
The car started and sped off towards the military guesthouse.
Throughout the journey, Director Li frowned and kept urging the driver to hurry up.
An hour later, the car came to a smooth stop in front of the military guesthouse.
Director Li practically jumped out of the car and strode towards the stairwell.
Xu Xinghe followed closely behind, carrying a lunchbox.
The two quickly arrived at the room door.
Director Li pushed open the half-closed door and saw Lin Hui lying on the bed, her face as pale as paper, her lips bloodless, and her forehead covered with a fine layer of cold sweat.
"Huihui!" Director Li rushed to the bedside, his eyes reddening with anxiety as his gaze fell on her exposed wound.
The bandage was placed to the side, now mostly soaked in blood. The skin around the wound was still turned outwards, looking even more serious than Xu Xinghe had described.
"Why aren't you disinfecting? You're so careless. What if you get infected?"
Lin Hui weakly raised her eyes, her voice very soft, "I...I dare not touch it, it hurts terribly."
"This won't do!" Director Li turned around and ordered the guard who followed him in, "Quick! Go to the hospital and get the medicine and tools for treating wounds, and call a doctor over! Such a deep and long wound will probably need to be stitched up, otherwise it won't heal!"
“Director Li, there’s no need for stitches.” Xu Xinghe stepped forward. “I gave my sister-in-law some ointment for her wounds before, so it won’t leave a scar. Stitching would only damage the skin tissue and leave a scar, which would be counterproductive.”
Director Li recalled the miraculous effects of the wound medicine, hesitated for a moment, looked at the hideous wound on Lin Hui's leg, and finally nodded, "Okay, I'll do as you say! But the steps of disinfection and wound cleaning cannot be omitted, otherwise it is easy to get infected."
The guards quickly brought out alcohol-based saline solution and clean gauze swabs.
Director Li picked up the saline solution and carefully wiped Lin Hui's wound, trying to clean away the remaining dirt and scabs.
The moment she was touched, Lin Hui shuddered in pain, her brows furrowing tightly, gasping for breath, and tears welled up instantly. "It hurts! It hurts so much, Lao Li, be gentle..."
"Bear with it, it'll be over soon." Director Li felt extremely distressed and moved even more gently, but the wound was too deep, and it was inevitable that he would touch the wound surface.
Lin Hui curled up in pain, cold sweat pouring down her forehead, tears streaming down her face and soaking her pillowcase. She kept moaning, looking so weak and helpless that Xu Xinghe felt a pang of sadness.
After a long while, Director Li finally finished cleaning the wound, picked up the porcelain bottle next to Lin Hui, scooped out some ointment, and applied it.
Not long after the ointment was applied, her tense muscles gradually relaxed, her cries of pain subsided, and the pain on her face eased.
"It really doesn't hurt much anymore..." Lin Hui said softly.
The medicine worked even better than she had expected.
The wound cleaning was the most painful part, but once this medicine was applied, all that was left was a cooling sensation.
Director Li carefully bandaged the wound with clean gauze, moving gently as if afraid of aggravating it.
After finally finishing up, Lin Hui breathed a sigh of relief. "Old Li, I'm a little thirsty. Go get me a glass of water."
"Okay, I'll go right away!" Director Li replied quickly, turned around and strode out of the room, not forgetting to close the door behind him.
Only Xu Xinghe and Lin Hui remained in the room, and the atmosphere became somewhat quiet.
Lin Hui looked at her, sighed softly, and said gently, "Xinghe, don't overthink it."
Xu Xinghe looked up and met her gaze.
“My rush to save you was a completely subconscious reaction; I didn’t even expect it myself. You reacted quickly and dodged it. It was my own lack of control that caused the serious injury. So, my injury has nothing to do with you. You don’t need to keep it to yourself, and you don’t need to feel guilty.”
She gave a weak smile. "As long as I can save you, it's worth it no matter how badly I'm injured. Don't feel guilty about this. Let's just get along like before."
