TRAIN STATION.
There was still some time before ticket check-in.
Yi An looked down at her younger sister beside her, whose face was still somewhat pale.
The journey was long, and the hard-seat carriages were crowded and noisy. His sister was weak and definitely couldn't endure it. He gritted his teeth, took the money he got from selling the house, and quickly walked to the ticket window, where he bought two sleeper tickets.
When he returned with the ticket, he took a closer look at the berth number on the ticket and couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief.
He's very lucky!
The sleeper berths we bought were not far from each other, and they were even in the same carriage!
That way they can look after each other on the way.
Not long after, the train station's loudspeakers announced that it was time to check tickets and board the train.
The four people, carrying their luggage, followed the flow of people through the ticket gates and entered the station smoothly, successfully finding their respective carriages.
Jiang Linchuan helped Yi An lift his heavy luggage onto the luggage rack and patted him on the shoulder. "Our berths are over here. If you run into any trouble, come find me anytime."
"Okay, thank you!" Yi An nodded and thanked her quickly, then turned around, took her sister's hand, and led her back to their bunk.
It was the first time for both siblings to ride a sleeper train, and for Yi Nian, it was her first time riding a train in her entire life; her eyes were full of curiosity.
She sat carefully on her berth, gently touching the bed with her small hands, and couldn't help but peek around, sometimes looking at the luggage rack above her head, sometimes looking at the door connecting the carriages. Even the busy staff on the platform outside the window found it fascinating.
Yi An sat down beside her and whispered reassuringly, "Don't be afraid, sit tight, the train is about to leave."
As soon as he finished speaking, a slight tremor came from inside the carriage, and the train slowly started moving, gradually pulling away from the platform.
Yi Nian immediately moved closer to the window, watching the scenery outside begin to rush past, her little mouth slightly open.
Yi'an also turned her gaze to the window, watching the familiar small town gradually recede into the distance, and an overwhelming sense of excitement welled up in her heart.
He finally had the chance to leave the small village that had trapped him for so many years and take his sister to a new and better life!
The train traveled north and, after a bumpy night, finally entered Heilongjiang Province.
At dawn, the train came to a smooth stop at the railway station platform in Heilongjiang Province.
As dawn broke, the air was already filled with the unique, biting chill of Heilongjiang Province.
The four people got off the train with their luggage. As soon as they stepped out of the station exit, they saw a military vehicle waiting not far away.
Upon seeing Jiang Linchuan, the driver immediately saluted.
Jiang Linchuan nodded and gestured for everyone to get into the car. "The military sent a car to pick you up. Yi'an, you'll come with us. We'll take you to the town to settle in first."
Yi'an quickly thanked him and got into the car with her younger sister.
The military vehicle drove smoothly, heading towards the military headquarters.
When they passed through a town, Jiang Linchuan asked the driver to stop the car and looked at Yi An, saying, "You should get off here first. It would be best to find a place to stay in town for the time being."
“I happen to have a friend who has a vacant house in town. He lives at the military headquarters all year round and doesn’t come back. I have the key, and I can rent it to you for ten yuan a month.”
"I'll come pick you up tomorrow to report to the military headquarters. In the meantime, take your sister and familiarize yourself with the environment." After saying this, Jiang Linchuan took out a bunch of keys from his pocket and handed them to Yi An.
Yi'an took the key and nodded gratefully, "Thank you so much!"
He never expected Jiang Linchuan to have considered things so thoroughly.
These are no longer just his benefactors, but his second parents!
Not daring to waste time, he immediately took Yi Nian's hand, picked up the luggage, and got off the bus.
The military vehicle started up again.
Looking out at the familiar scenery, Xu Xinghe couldn't help but sigh softly, "Finally back."
Before long, the military vehicles arrived at the military headquarters.
It was already broad daylight, and the sunlight shone on the military camp. Except for being a little colder than when they left, everything was exactly the same as before.
Xu Xinghe followed Jiang Linchuan, looking around as they walked.
I didn't think there was anything special about living here before, but after leaving for a while and coming back, I found that my heart was full of nostalgia.
The two headed straight for the small courtyard where Xu Xinghe lived.
Pushing open the gate, the courtyard was spotless, as was the house, clearly indicating that someone regularly came to clean it.
Xu Xinghe felt a warmth in her heart; indeed, only here could she feel true human kindness.
Jiang Linchuan put their luggage inside. "I'm going to the military headquarters to report on the mission. I'll be back after I've finished dealing with things."
"Okay, you go ahead, I can take care of things here myself."
After watching him leave, Xu Xinghe began to pack up.
Just then, the courtyard door was pushed open with a bang, and Lian Xiao rushed in. Upon seeing the person inside, he excitedly shouted, "Xing He! You're finally back!"
Lian Xiao rushed to Xu Xinghe, grabbed her arm, and looked her up and down. Only after confirming that she hadn't lost weight did he breathe a sigh of relief. His tone was somewhat reproachful, "Why did you take so long this time! Also, you went back to Shanghai by yourself without even telling me or visiting Grandpa. Grandpa has been nagging you about it for a while now!"
Xu Xinghe felt a little embarrassed. She hadn't actually gone back to Shanghai; that was just an excuse made up by Political Commissar Wang.
She quickly explained, "I had an urgent matter to attend to when I returned to Shanghai that time. I only stayed in Shanghai for one day before leaving. I spent the rest of the time in other places and couldn't find the time to visit my grandfather. I will make a special trip back to see him when I have more free time later."
Lian Xiao wanted to ask a few more questions, but Xu Xinghe quickly spoke first, changing the subject, "Let's not talk about me. How have you been lately? Is everything going smoothly at the military headquarters?"
Lian Xiao could tell she didn't want to talk about it, so he didn't press her further. He continued, "I'm still the same as always, busy every day. By the way, do you remember that Lin Hui from before?"
Xu Xinghe nodded. "I remember. What's wrong?"
"She's actually a spy! We've already arrested her!" Lian Xiao said gravely. "Even her husband is being investigated by the military because of her, and he'll probably be punished."
Xu Xinghe showed no surprise. "I had already guessed that she had a problem. When I was in contact with her before, I felt that her words and actions were a bit strange. There was always a sense of deliberateness and hypocrisy about her."
Lian Xiao nodded in agreement and sighed, "I really didn't expect these spies to have infiltrated so deeply and hidden themselves so well. Luckily, we discovered them early and arrested them in time, otherwise who knows how many secrets would have been leaked and how much trouble would have ensued!"
Xu Xinghe didn't want to talk about it, so she took out the local specialties she had bought in Liaoning Province and handed them to Lian Xiao, saying, "These are for you. They contain some dried seafood that you can't buy here."
Lian Xiao happily put it away, but when he saw there was another identical one next to it, his mood immediately soured. "Who is this one for?"
"For dictionaries."
"Then I'm afraid you can't give it to me, Zhang Cishu has already left."
Xu Xinghe looked up in surprise, "Gone? Where did he go?"
