Chapter 158 Trading Firewood for Food (2/2)

Basically, if you call her three or four times, she'll eat at Sister Sheng's house once.

Miao Huahua rarely goes out when it gets cold. She doesn't have many clothes, and it's windy outside, so she prefers to stay at home where it's not so windy or cold.

Miao Huahua prepared all the firewood for the family. They also have a kang (a heated brick bed) that is burned with firewood.

Ruan Yunxi is afraid of the cold and doesn't like to go out after winter begins. Before Gu Weizhou goes out for training, he always heats the kang (a heated brick bed) for her.

If you don't have enough firewood, you can burn coal.

While others bought one or two truckloads of coal, Ruan Yunxi bought three or four.

Buying coal requires coupons, and Gu Weizhou didn't have enough, so he tried to borrow or exchange them. He then used the exchanged coupons to buy coal for Ruan Yunxi to keep warm.

Otherwise, the firewood under their eaves wouldn't be enough to burn.

That day, Ruan Yunxi was playing with Amber at home when she vaguely heard a noise behind her. She hid Amber in her spatial storage, wrapped herself in a cotton coat, and went out to check. She saw Miao Huahua carrying a bundle of firewood and putting it into her woodpile.

When Ruan Yunxi noticed, she smiled sheepishly and said, "I noticed you don't have much firewood. I chopped a lot of firewood before, so I brought you some."

Looking at Miao Huahua, who had selflessly given so much, Ruan Yunxi asked, "Have you eaten?"

Miao Huahua shook her head.

Ruan Yunxi waved: "Come to my house, I've cooked seafood porridge and steamed buns, they're still warm."

Miao Huahua asked, "Do you need more firewood? I'll bring you some firewood, and you give me something to eat in return."

"Yes." Ruan Yunxi nodded.

Coal is clean, but firewood is still needed to heat the kang (a traditional heated bed), as it produces more smoke and makes the kang warmer.

Besides, Miao Huahua wanted to exchange her labor for food, so how could Ruan Yunxi refuse this awkward and sensitive woman?

Ruan Yunxi could tell that Miao Huahua was trying her best to survive and live a better life.

At least I don't want to go hungry!

Fortunately, she had no shortage of food.

Miao Huahua's face lit up with a happy expression, her eyebrows and eyes relaxed. Perhaps it was just my imagination, but when she smiled, she looked more like Gu's mother.

Unfortunately, this Miao Huahua is not Gu Mama's daughter.

They look so alike.

Upon hearing that she was willing to do chores, Miao Huahua happily followed Ruan Yunxi home.

Ruan Yunxi told her to warm herself by the fire in the kitchen, where firewood was burning so the kang (heated brick bed) would stay warm.

Ruan Yunxi pretended to take food from the cupboard, but actually took out some hot "two-in-one dough" from her spatial storage. It was a dough made from wheat flour and corn flour, called "two-in-one dough," and was used to make steamed buns. When Sister-in-law Sheng was making them, Ruan Yunxi asked her to knead the dough for her to save time.

There are about fifty of them, enough to last a long time.

Two fist-sized steamed buns, both made with sourdough at this time, were not very fluffy, but they were very substantial. One bite and you had food in your stomach.

While eating steamed buns, Ruan Yunxi also scooped out a large bowl of seafood porridge.

She cooked this herself today; she had finished all the previous batches, and since she had some free time today, she cooked a big pot of porridge again.

She had seafood porridge for lunch, and after finishing a bowl, sweat beaded on her nose.

If Ruan Yunxi gets hungry around 3 or 4 o'clock, she will eat some sandwich biscuits.

Or perhaps peach shortbread.

Or it could be pastries from Daoxiangcun.

She had already finished the butterfly cookies.

There are no butterfly cookies to eat now.

Look at this big bowl of seafood congee. It's full of seafood, but it's not the kind of clear broth where you can't even scoop out any rice.

Miao Huahua, holding the bowl of porridge, looked at Ruan Yunxi and said gratefully, "Thank you, sister-in-law. This is the best porridge I've ever eaten in my life."

Looking at Miao Huahua, who was poor and pitiful, with several marks on her exposed arms from being hit by fire sticks, Ruan Yunxi felt a pang of sadness and pity for her: "Eat quickly, it won't taste good when it's cold. From now on, we'll give you our family's firewood, and you can exchange a bundle of firewood for a steamed bun."

Ruan Yunxi actually didn't lack this little bit of firewood.

She knew that getting something for nothing would ruin a person.

Food earned through labor is cherished.

For Miao Huahua, cutting firewood to exchange for food is the best way to obtain food.

Miao Huahua nodded gratefully.

Ruan Yunxi looked at her thin clothes, her bony back, and how she was shivering as she squatted by the fire, which showed how cold she was.

Ruan Yunxi knew that Miao Huahua probably didn't have many winter clothes.

Coincidentally, she had quite a few of Ning Zhenzhen and Le Yao's old clothes in her space!
