"The braised pork ribs are ready! Dinner's ready, honey!" Gu Weizhou shouted from the kitchen.
Ruan Yunxi and Xiao Yingtao, who were playing cat's cradle, immediately stopped their game and set up the kang table. Now Ruan Yunxi has gotten used to eating on the kang.
It's cold.
Unless absolutely necessary, they generally avoid getting off the heated kang (a traditional heated brick bed).
Gu Weizhou prepared two dishes and a soup: braised pork ribs, steamed mantis shrimp, seaweed and egg drop soup, and a pot of rice. Ruan Yunxi likes to eat rice and doesn't like steamed buns or noodles.
Whenever she eats at home, it's almost always rice.
Little Cherry looked at the fragrant braised pork and almost drooled: "Auntie, do you really not need any more daughters?"
Ruan Yunxi smiled and placed a piece of pork rib on her plate: "What a waste! If I made you my daughter, your mother would have no daughter left. Would you be willing to do that?"
Little Cherry chose her mother over the ribs: "When I grow up, I'll be your daughter!"
Ruan Yunxi was both amused and exasperated: "Fine, I'll be your daughter when you grow up!"
As he spoke, he put another piece of pork rib on her plate.
Looking at the well-behaved and adorable little cherry, Gu Weizhou imagined their daughter would be just as cute.
He gave the peeled mantis shrimp meat to Ruan Yunxi and also put two pieces of spare ribs on her plate: "Eat it while it's hot."
"Thank you!" Ruan Yunxi smiled as she ate the mantis shrimp that Gu Weizhou had peeled. It was only after arriving here that she was able to eat mantis shrimp. In Shanghai, Ruan Yunxi could never see them. They looked like worms, and her family never ate them.
After they had eaten and drunk their fill, they fed the fawn carrots.
It's cold, so the little deer is staying in their room to keep warm. The little deer is limping, and it has been washed and doesn't smell, otherwise it wouldn't be staying in their room.
Return the little cherry before dark.
Sister-in-law Sheng said, "Miao Huahua's mother and younger brother have arrived. They'll probably stay here for the New Year before leaving."
Ruan Yunxi seemed to realize something and asked, "Have you seen anyone?"
Sister-in-law Sheng nodded.
Ruan Yunxi said, "Don't you think that the mother, daughter, and siblings don't look alike?"
Sister-in-law Sheng nodded: "I think so too. They don't look like a family. Could it be that they look like Dad?"
“Looking at her younger brother, he doesn’t really look like her mother.” Ruan Yunxi thought of Gu Weizhou.
Actually, Miao Huahua's facial features resemble Gu Weizhou's more.
It's just that DNA testing isn't possible these days. If it were, Ruan Yunxi would love to have them tested, as she always felt that they were the real siblings.
Before meeting Miao Huahua's mother and younger brother, Ruan Yunxi had no such idea.
Upon seeing her, I realized that Miao Huahua wasn't my biological daughter.
However, she couldn't tell anyone about it, lest others think she was overthinking things.
Miao Huahua's mother and younger brother came to the family compound. To avoid them causing trouble, she didn't go to Ruan Yunxi's house, lest her mother and younger brother cause trouble at Ruan Yunxi's house.
Knowing what kind of people they were, Miao Huahua didn't want to cause trouble for Ruan Yunxi and the others.
On the way, they met Sister-in-law Sheng and explained the reason, so that Ruan Yunxi wouldn't feel that her mother and brother had come and hadn't been introduced to her.
When Ruan Yunxi found out, she didn't say anything: "I understand. It's good for her to spend more time with her family."
When Miao's mother and her son arrived at the family compound, they wandered around for a bit. Even in the dead of winter, they wanted to go for a stroll by the sea. The old woman didn't like Miao's mother and son very much and urged them to go back to their hometown every few days.
Miao's mother said, "It's rare for you to come all this way. We'll go back after the New Year. There's nothing going on at home right now, and Tianbao is getting on in years. You mentioned before that you'd arrange a job for him, so you can do that too. After all, our eldest daughter has been married to your family for two years, and she didn't marry for nothing."
The old woman choked for a moment and said, "We agreed that I would arrange a job for you, but you should make sure your daughter has a healthy belly. She's been married for years and hasn't gotten pregnant at all. We'll talk about it after she gives birth to a big, fat grandson."
Miao's mother immediately urged Miao Huahua to give birth.
Miao Huahua looked at her mentally challenged husband, lowered her head and remained silent, even when her ear was being pulled.
Miao's mother scolded her: "You're already married, having children is your duty. For your brother's sake, give them a grandson as soon as possible so you can have a stable position in this family. So many people in the village envy your good life. Don't be ungrateful."
Seeing that Miao Huahua was wearing a nice sweater, Miao's mother said, "Take off your sweater and let me wear it; I'm cold."
