Chapter 168 Refusing to Play Matchmaker (2/2)

After ordering a cappuccino and dessert, Ruan Yunxi handed the menu to Wang Xiang and her daughter: "Is there something you need from me?"

Wang Xiang blushed with embarrassment.

Aunt Wang said, "I'd like to ask if there are any unmarried men in your husband's unit. If there are any suitable ones, I'd like to introduce them to your sister Xiangxiang."

Ruan Yunxi raised an eyebrow: "I remember she was married?"

Wang Xiang looked embarrassed: "That man is a good-for-nothing, I plan to divorce him."

Ruan Yunxi understood. She knew that military officers had good benefits and wanted to dump her current husband and find a better man to marry.

Ruan Yunxi refused, saying, "No, everyone I know is married. The women living in the family compound are all married women with families to support. I can't introduce anyone to you."

"Besides, even if you want to find someone else, you should do it after you're divorced, instead of looking for a better option while you're still married." Ruan Yunxi looked down on the mother and daughter's behavior.

Wang Xiang's face darkened when she was rejected: "Fine, if you're not going to help, then forget it."

"Yes, I'm not helping." With her eyes on what she had, she was looking down on what she could get.

Unexpectedly, she was so ruthless. Wang Xiang was furious: "Do you still remember Lu Minghua? I remember you wanted to elope with him to Hong Kong, but in the end you married a military officer. It seems you weren't so faithful after all."

"My current husband and I were betrothed as children. Who else would I marry if not him?" Ruan Yunxi scoffed, "Who is this Lu Minghua you're talking about? Do I even know him?"

Wang Xiang, feeling embarrassed by her shamelessness, choked for a moment: "Stop pretending. Everyone here knows about your shady affair with Lu Minghua!"

"You know it's a trivial matter, and you only bring it up because you have a sharp tongue." Looking at the coffee and desserts that were served, Ruan Yunxi said to the waiter, "Take it to go, I'll take it home to eat!"

Ruan Yunxi didn't want to waste her breath on them; she'd rather talk to Gu Weizhou.

Wang Xiang and her daughter were furious at being looked down upon: "Don't think you're so great just because you married a military officer. With your family background, you'll only be despised."

"You talk as if your ingredients are so much better than mine. Don't forget, we're made from the same ingredients." Ruan Yunxi took the packaged pastries, finished her cappuccino in one gulp, and turned to leave.

The mother and daughter almost ground their teeth to dust as they watched the tall figure disappear into the distance.

Having failed to achieve their goal, the mother and daughter felt it inappropriate to continue spending money there. Their family didn't have the spare cash to spend at a coffee shop, especially since they didn't have a military officer husband to support them.

I've heard that soldiers have good benefits and officers have high salaries.

Their family is so poor they can barely afford to eat, how could they afford coffee?

Thanks to Ruan Yunxi's hospitality, when the coffee and desserts were served, the mother and daughter, thinking it was a waste not to eat them, leisurely drank the coffee, enjoyed the mousse cake, and only after they had eaten their fill did they plan to leave.

As the mother and daughter were leaving, a shop assistant stopped them, saying, "You haven't paid your bill yet!"

Wang Xiang was dumbfounded: "Didn't Ruan Yunxi already pay the bill?"

The clerk truthfully informed them: "The woman who came with you only paid for her own coffee and pastries; you didn't pay for yours."

Wang Xiang's face turned green: "Didn't she say she'd treat us to coffee? If she can't afford it, she shouldn't say it!"

Mrs. Wang cursed under her breath as she asked the shop assistant, "How much?"

"3.58 yuan." The clerk took out the bill.

Wang Xiang's face darkened even more.

A coffee costing a little over three yuan would have been nothing to me before my family fell into poverty.

Now their family only earns about 70 or 80 yuan a month, and they have to support seven or eight people. That 3 yuan can buy four or five jin of pork, enough for the family to eat for several meals.

Who knew that two cups of coffee and three pastries would be gone in no time?

If they had known they would be paying, they wouldn't have ordered the expensive dishes.

I thought I could get a free meal, but who knew I'd get extra.

As Wang Xiang and her daughter left the coffee shop, their hearts were bleeding.
