Chapter 2 Rural Areas or Port City (1/2)

Upon seeing her, Granny Hua exclaimed excitedly, "Miss Yunxi, you'd better run, or you might be sent to the countryside!"

Ruan Yunxi knew about this. It was March 1969, and their Ruan family, being capitalists, had already been targeted.

If she hadn't run away, she would have been destined to go to the countryside.

She didn't want to go to the countryside.

In the novel, she ran away with Lu Minghua, only to be sold by him.

In the present-day Hong Kong, as an orphan, if she went there, she would only be targeted as a lamb to the slaughter.

Ruan Yunxi had a second option: "Granny, do you still remember the betrothal my grandfather arranged for me when I was a child?"

Granny Hua frowned, seemingly disapproving: "Miss Yunxi is referring to that boy from the Gu family?"

Ruan Yunxi nodded. In the later part of the novel, the person who rescued her was none other than her childhood sweetheart.

Granny Hua hesitated: "Didn't Miss Yunxi look down on that boy?"

“That was before. Now he’s a military officer. If I fulfill my marriage agreement with him, I can accompany him to the military.” Ruan Yunxi knew that no matter how chaotic things were outside, the military and government would protect her once she became a military dependent.

Her current situation is sensitive, and the best outcome for her, besides running away, is to become a military dependent.

Coincidentally, that man is now a military officer. If the two of them get married, she can stay away from the conflicts and live a quiet life in the family compound.

It's no better than going to the countryside.

Moreover, as mentioned in the novel, that man had remained unmarried ever since he and Lu Minghua eloped.

That man is much more reliable than that scumbag Lu Minghua.

Granny Hua narrowed her eyes as she thought of the saying, "Eat cabbage hearts when you eat vegetables, and marry a People's Liberation Army soldier."

"Is it that Lu Minghua is unwilling to take Miss to Hong Kong?"

Knowing that Granny Hua was doing it all for her own good, Ruan Yunxi didn't hide anything: "Granny, he's not a good person. He just wants to swindle my family's property."

Granny Hua gasped, "No, Miss, don't be fooled by him. I knew he was being unusually attentive; he's just taking advantage of the fact that Master and Madam are gone, leaving you all alone. Since you've made up your mind, go find that boy from the Gu family and make him marry you."

Thinking of the tense atmosphere outside, Granny Hua said, "Miss, you'd better leave as soon as possible, otherwise..."

Before he could finish speaking, someone knocked on the door.

When Ruan Yunxi and Granny Hua went outside, they saw people from the neighborhood committee: "Is Ruan Yunxi home?"

Ruan Yunxi nodded: "At home, comrade, is there anything you need?"

The street office staff came to deliver a notice, staring at her and saying, "Comrade Ruan Yunxi, the first batch of educated youth to go to the countryside this year has begun to be called up. You meet the requirements. Please register at the educated youth office within three days."

Ruan Yunxi nodded: "I know. Are Lu Minghua and Ning Zhenzhen also on the list of those sent to the countryside?"

The person from the neighborhood committee nodded and then reminded them, "If the three of you go to the countryside together, you can be assigned to a rubber plantation; otherwise, you'll just be scattered and randomly assigned."

Ruan Yunxi smiled: "I'll be there then."

Watching the people from the neighborhood committee leave, Granny Hua grabbed her hand: "It's hot and there are lots of mosquitoes, snakes, and rats in Yunnan Province. How can Miss Yunxi go there?"

Granny Hua urged, "Miss Yunxi, quickly call that boy from the Gu family."

Ruan Yunxi nodded and handed her a box: "When Lu Minghua comes looking for me later, take this out and give it to me."

"That boy is no good. Miss Yunxi, don't associate with him too much." Granny Hua was angry when she heard that Lu Minghua wanted to take advantage of the family's poverty.

“I have a plan. Just do as I say.” Ruan Yunxi thought of something and reminded me, “Just call me Yunxi from now on. Don’t call me ‘Miss.’ It’s not good if people hear that.”

Granny Hua nodded; she was just used to calling her that.

Without delay, Ruan Yunxi found the letter Gu Weizhou had written to her before, which contained his phone number, telling her to call him if she needed anything.
